Warner Bros. Puts the Kibosh On ELFQUEST Movie

Since the mid 90's creators, Wendy and Richard Pini, have been trying to get an Elfquest film off the grounds. Click the jump for Warner Bros. inept reason for not moving forward with the project.

What is Elfquest? It is a fantasy story about a community of elves and other fictional species who struggle to survive and coexist on a primitive Earth-like planet with two moons. Several published volumes of prose fiction also share the same setting. Over the years Elfquest has been self-published by the Pinis, then Marvel Comics,[1] then the Pinis again through their own company Warp Graphics and more recently DC Comics. - Wikipedia

In October news started to look up as a new writer, Joe Ahearne (Dr. Who) was hired to rewrite the script. A script that initially was started by the director of Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Rawson Marshall Thurber. Rawson was also set to direct the feature if it ever got the greenlight.

That was then and this is now. As Wendy Masque, an employee at Warp Graphics has posted a somber update on the Elfquest Official Facebook Page:

"After close to four years of suspense - and longer than four years of your much-appreciated interest and support - the word has come down from Warner Bros. And the word is "no." Their simple explanation is that they don't want to compete with "The Hobbit." This was a possibility, among several, that we were prepared for. It is a relief, at last, to know.

So...where that leaves us is that Wendy has done all she can, for three decades, with regard to an Elfquest movie. There is nothing more she can do or wants to do. As for Richard, he will continue to manage Warp Graphics' properties and pursue publishing and licensing opportunities.

Thank you so much for all your love and encouragement. Believe us, it has not fallen on bare rock. We will spend the next few years producing Elfquest "The Final Quest." Then, who knows? Our capacity for dreaming big has not diminished.

Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope another studio sees some potential in this cult classic comic book.

They shoulda went to Disney or Dreamworks, and have them make a CGI film of it instead. Elfquest has no leg to stand on in live action. Unless of course they can get Cameron to direct, which will never happen. The 80ies are over and in our day and age, good fantasy that is fit for live action is very hard to come by. Tolkien's work is the rare exception and even that needs to be slightly altered for live action. For every Tolkien written page, there's a campy fantasy book on bookstore shelves that will never be fit for live action.

Wait until next year when Hobbit comes out and makes a fortune. THEN SUDDENLY Warner Bros. will reconsider.

But its probably for the best. WB keeps making garbage. Other than Harry Potter they have screwed so many properties.

If Elfquest was done correctly, it would be a GREAT franchise

Marvel, Warp and the Pini's published Elfquest.
Here's the kicker if Warner had it that means it paid the Pini's for the rights for four years at least and they made their money.

Last time I talked to the Pini's (well one of them) it was a no go then and they had no delusions it would get made in the near future.

It took me years to give Elfquest a chance. Then one year I was stuck on "vacation" in Ohio, suffering through yet another visit to an antiques store, where I found a buttload of Elfquest comics. They were actually pretty darn good. Also on that trip I found a ton of old graphic novels like The Death of Captain Marvel, Revenge of the Living Monolith, and others.
