Will We See THE LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy Re-Released In 3D?

Peter Jackson (director of this December's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) shares his thoughts on the chances of his The Lord of the Rings trilogy being re-released in 3D, revealing that, "it has been discussed".

In an interview with Deadline, Peter Jackson was quizzed on whether there are any plans to release The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King in 3D. It didn't exactly pay off for Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace earlier this year, but would arguably unite all five films as both The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There And Back Again are to be released in the format.

"It has been discussed over the years. It’s a money thing and it’s a market thing. Look, everything in Hollywood is driven by the market and by money. If Warner Bros felt they could rerelease these films and cover the cost of conversion then I’m sure they will do it. Everyone got excited after Titanic was converted and released, and then the numbers were not great for Episode One of Star Wars. Really, as an industry, people are still wondering what the economics are for post-converting older movies into 3D. I don’t think the question has really been answered and maybe it won’t be until later when entertainment systems at home become more sophisticated and everyone has 3D. But now, I’m afraid it’s still a question mark."

It would make sense for Warner Bros. to re-release them as The Hobbit looks set to introduce a whole new generation to Middle Earth. Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

oh god lord of the rings in 3d nooooooo.
3d is not that good realy it still relies on 1930's technology and is painfull to watch, and to be honest lord of the rings doesnt realy need it, it stands as is a work of art and no more needed.

I would love for this to happen just so I can expirience this amazing trilogy in the theater, I never got the chance to see any of the movies in all of their glory on the big screen and this may be my last chance to do so.

Oh grif. So angry all the time. So sad. Who hurt you grif? Hmm? Who did it? Lol

LOTR = greatest trilogy of all time. If they decide to re-release it, eh who cares. It will put the movies back in theater for a bit at least. I'm just glad they didn't make them in 3D the first time. Kinda wishin they didn't with the Hobbit

Makes sense.
Two consecutive years of Hobbit films plus three more with the LotR trilogy again.

That can only = $$$

I think it's a complete and utter waste of time to convert LOTR to 3-D. When will this madness end? It's one thing if a movie is shot in 3-D and is fully intended from day one of filming to be presented in that format. The movie is filmed with full intention of using the 3-D gimmick and cinematography is adjusted accordingly. To go back and convert an older film that was NOT shot in that format adds nothing to it and destroys the original artistic vision. It's as bad as going back and colorizing a black-and-white film.

Don't really need to see three of my all time favourite movies looking like a child's pop-up book, so no thanks!

I remember back in the day when 3D came out the screen and in ur face now its just a tag along to flicks with extra depth.

Its just a money grab in this period in cinema, which is very sad :(

I wish more directors use IMAX because of the quality,I would pay extra.

Chris Nolan led by example and dismissed 3D cause of the same reasons and Im paying $35 a ticket to c his masterpiece !!!

Well they must be living on earth two 'cause in my world SW:E1 3D made 103 million bugs (world wide); so I don't understand why they shouldn't consider that re-release a success.

In a way, I agree with grif.. though I don't hate the LOTR trilogy. I just don't care for all the 3D bandwagon nonsense for this. It doesn't make an already classically good film look better. Digitally re-mastering it, however, is a GOOD idea.
