GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE Box Office Falls Even Below Projections

Surprising absolutely no one, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance finished third in the weekend box office, doing even worse than early predictions.

Early analysis had Ghost Rider coming in second place with a solid $25 million opening. Whether it was by word of mouth, online petitions by fans to boycott the film in support of Gary Friedrich, or having seen the first film Ghost Rider came in third place with $22 million. Rentrak has the weekend box office projected figures. The Denzel Washington/Ryan Reynolds flick Safe House edged out The Vow in a close race. While Ghost Rider finished a close third, it was a disappointing opening. The first film made $45 million the opening weekend with $115 million total, stay tuned to see the final figures but it looks like we may be spared a third trip with The Rider.

1. Safe House $23,969,280
2. The Vow $23,600,000
3. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance $22,000,000
4. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island $20,085,000
5. This Means War $17,550,000
6. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace 3D $7,865,000
7. Chronicle $7,500,000
8. The Woman in Black $6,645,000
9. The Secret World of Arrietty $6,375,000
10. The Grey $3,031,454

So, seen the movie yet? Are you surprised it finished 3rd? Thoughts, feelings, smart remarks? Sound off below!

Ghost Rider looked great but everything else in the movie failed badly so this isnt surprising at all.

Neveldine & Taylor cant direct shit.
They can make action scenes look intense but about it.

@Thorverine- that's gotta be the gayest comic book movie scene in history!

The movie is probably average, but it might not have done well because of forcing people to see it in 3D. Only the smallest and most out of the way theater in my city was showing it in 2D.

This movie was terrible in just about every way. If they try this again, they need to blow the whole thing up. Get someone who actually resembles Johnny Blaze and make this a Blade type movie. Almost a horror movie, type of feel. And for God sakes, no more Nick Cage!

I guess this also ruins the chances of Neveldine and Taylor making a Twisted Metal movie. Sony won't let them do anything else after this letdown.

Just saw safe house with my girl and we both really enjoyed it. Safe house was even better than we thought it was going to be. Sad about GR2 but definitely not unexpected. Wanted this to be good but gonna wait until rental.

Yeah, the character isn't the problem, half the cast are bad acting in this. Cage, Whitworth and Hindis are terrible. Cage is just doing a odd mix of crazy and yet going through the motions. The story isn't bad, its average. Acting just kills. Replace those three and its actually Got a shot at being a decent popcorn film.

And yes, this movie sucked donkey balls. Does it make part one(which really wasn't a good film to begin with) look like The Dark Knight? To some extent, yes.

Hey Rider, if you hurry you might be able to get back to Marvel in time for them to film a quick cameo scene in Avengers.

Should have been rated R and played up the horror angle
maverickaim9
maverickaim9 - 2/19/2012, 5:12 PM
The only reason this movie made that kind of money it's because of the 3D pushing at movie theaters. I saw it yesterday and was forced to shell out $20 at Regal movie theater for its Regal Premium Xperience (RPX). While the sound is awesome and picture quality too, this movie was utter cow doo-doo. This is the worst movie I've ever seen, apart from crank 1 and 2.

give it a couple of years let marvel studio's make a ghost rider/blade movies.

you could have a two part r-rated horror movies & have blade & ghost rider fight each other than team up against a common threat.

I think having to ponie up anywhere from 12 to 15 bucks for a movie has alot to do with it , OK just does not cut it anymore for those prices , The Studio's Make the Big bucks on the Bigger Pictures.
I'm sure it's better than the first and i'll get around to seeing it , but for now I'M BROKE !
Cheesehead
Cheesehead - 2/19/2012, 5:54 PM
@gunner- Thats really debatable. The first is probably the overall better movie. Seriously. This thing was really bad. I saw it 2D for 6 bucks. I would have been pissed if I paid to see this shit bag in 3D.
