Ghost Rider Writer Thinks MCU Reboot Should Embrace "R-Rated Horror"; Placeholder Synopsis Revealed

Writer Benjamin Percy, who worked on Marvel's Ghost Rider comic a few years ago, feels that the planned MCU reboot should lean into R-rated body horror...

During Marvel Studios' San Diego Comic-Con panel in July, it was finally confirmed that Ryan Gosling will play Ghost Rider in a long-awaited MCU reboot.

Though he will likely be a part of the planned Midnight Sons movie, the Project Hail Mary star will debut as the flame-headed Spirit of Vengeance in a new solo Ghost Rider project from director Shawn Levy (Deadpool and Wolverine, Star Wars: Starfighter), and the movie will ride into theaters in 2028.

Starfighter writer Jonathan Tropper has been enlisted to pen the script, and we recently got word that Heated Rivalry star Connor Storrie is in talks to play the undisclosed villain.

We still don't know exactly what Marvel Studios has planned for this reboot, but writer Benjamin Percy, who worked on Marvel’s Ghost Rider comic series between 2022 and 2023, believes the movie should fully embrace "R-rated horror."

“Let me say that as a horror head, this is my time, right? I’m in my zone right now," he told ComicBook.com. "I’m sure whatever Marvel conjures up is going to be great, but I would lean towards the R-rated horror version of the character and not do the standard cape and spandex, MCU type, which can be very effective if you’re doing a Doomsday storyline, or an X-Men storyline. But in this case, I would really lean into, like, Johnny pulling hot chains out of his mouth, Hellraiser style, or his skin melting right off of him with a halo of flames around. Like, give us the body horror. Give us a really hellish iteration of Ghost Rider on the screen.”

Of course, MCU movies are almost always PG-13, but the recent Deadpool and Wolverine was an exception, and ended up becoming Marvel/Disney's most profitable film in quite some time. With this in mind, an R-rated Ghost Rider movie is not outside the realm of possibility.

We also have a placeholder synopsis for the movie. It's actually taken from Vol.10 of the Ghost Rider comic book, but it may still confirm that Gosling will play Johnny Blaze.

Several characters have held the Ghost Rider mantle in the comics over the years, including Blaze, Robbie Reyes, Danny Ketch, Alejandra Jones, Michael Badilino, and Kushala. Nicolas Cage played Blaze in two poorly received movies, and more recently, Gabriel Luna portrayed Reyes in the now-defunct Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series.

THR's report on Gosling's casting mentioned that he will play Blaze, but this was not disclosed at SDCC, and Kevin Feige declined to clarify which version of the character will be introduced in the movie during a post-panel interview.

“I am going to let Ryan reveal what he wants to reveal, when he wants to reveal it, and what he wanted to reveal today is…he’s playing Ghost Rider. He is a huge fan of the comics; he did come to us particularly with a specific vision, based on some particular comics.”

During a follow-up interview with Empire, Feige revealed that it was Gosling himself who came up with this new "vision" for Ghost Rider.

“It was Gosling who had the vision. It was Gosling who had the pitch that won over Shawn, that had them come and pitch us this idea, which led to us on stage today.”

Go big or go home.

Of course it must have Mephisto. But bring in the Punisher too.

They didn't tap Shawn Levy to direct for horror aspects...

@IAmAHoot - Maybe, but he's not completely out of the realm, having done Stranger Things. I feel like Disney thought that put him right in the sweet spot where it can have horror elements without losing the younger audiences.

@Patient2670 - See, I didn't know that... Makes sense then I suppose. But we'll see. Selling an R-rated Deadpool & Wolverine was much easier than a new character introduction (into the MCU) and potentially missing out on PG-13 box office for a Ryan Gosling (MCU) superhero movie.

Lolz, i dare them to make it hard R.

D&W had it easy with brand recognition and all those pathetic cameos.

But without those, a hard R marvel project will fail imo

@vectorsigma - Nah. They will succeed. Making it PG13 can fence Johnny Blaze into lukewarm storytelling which can lessen the chances of unpredictability.

A good story that has less limitations can bring more authentic feel for a Ghost Rider comic.

We don't need an R rating simply for jumpscares and nudity.

We need the R-Rating to separate the shit Ghost Rider has to deal with from the rest of the MCU.

The right amount of tension and dread will create the perfect atmosphere for a man who made a deal with the devil. We need to hate what he's going through, while rooting for every millisecond of justice he brings in the realm where he resides, which is unfit for the majority of current MCU.

Makes no sense that they had Sam Raimi, who has multiple times said that he would like to direct another MCU movie, and didn't give this project to him.

@FinnishDude - To be fair, this wasn't something that Marvel was pursuing to be in active development. It's been made clear that Ryan Gosling pitched it with Shawn Levy, which is when Marvel greenlit the movie and why it's moving so fast.

I'm sure if it was in active development in general, Sam Raimi's name would have been thrown around like it was for Secret Wars at one point years ago.

They won't do this unless the budget is low to reduce the risk.

Ghost Rider is no Deadpool or Wolverine.

@UnderBelly - Ghost Rider is [frick]ing awesome. They can make this guy the best thing at MARVEL.

He should be right up there with Deadpool and Wolverine, if not above them.

What if Jason Vorhees fought for justice, against demons????

He took out any corrupted humans who got in the way, while trying to find a sense of normalcy when not dealing with the esoteric.

MARVEL needs to get away from that softball Disney shit and go all out!

What if Johnny went to remove the dark hold from the Scarlett Witch?

What if he had to bring back the Black Widow?

What if he had to team up with Dr. Strange to find Baron Mordo?

What if Blaze became best friends with Brother Voodoo??? Wtf kind of friendship would that even be? What would it look like?

What if Johnny Blaze sought out Man-Thing?

There's so many ways this shit could land as a peak franchise.

They need to abide by one rule:

Do NOT paint by numbers on this one...

@UnderBelly - Ghost Rider, by his very nature is never going to be a low budget movie. FIre is one of the more difficult and expensive VFX to get right. It won't be Spiderman BND levels of costly, but it certainly won't be Clayface price points either. Besides, With Ryan Gosling in the lead, and the director of Deadpool & Wolverine behind the lens, I'd bet they're feeling pretty confident about spending money to (re)launch a character that people have been wanting to see.

So it's a Dark Knight Returns-style Ghost Rider rather than an origin movie.

I think
1. They should fr defo 1000% cast Eva Mendes as Johnny's wife Roxanne.
and
2. Those Danny Ketch rumors are prolly true since this would lend itself very well to a passing of the mantle thing.

@UltronIO - God no. Passing the "mantle" in the first movie reeks of Lanterns

Deadpool and Wolverine broke the precedent of PG-13 only movies. However, I’d still be very surprised if this ends up being R
Patient2670
Patient2670 - 10/29/2026, 11:37 AM
@MrDandy - Agreed. Nor do I think it necessarily needs to be R rated.
KennKathleen
KennKathleen - 10/29/2026, 12:46 PM
@Patient2670 - To counter my above statement- I can agree that GR does not have to or need to be rated R.

Need is too strong of a word.

BUT- I will say that I don't want to dilute the core concepts of a strong story, solely to reach a wider audience.

One of my biggest MARVEL gripes is seeing and hearing about all of the cool shit that could've happened... IN HINDSIGHT!

Show us your best shot, or stfu.

Percy’s take on it does sound cool and i hope we get something akin to that even if it’s not what you would expect from Gosling and Levy but we’ll see…

Honestly even if Levy channels his experience on Stranger Things with the horror elements on GR then I feel that would even be pretty good imo for the film.

However I wonder if it will be Rated R or not?.

I ask that because Levy has done a recent Rated R film in DP & W but will Gosling be willing to take that risk given how commercial and popular he is now…

I’m unsure on that but I hope so since I feel that would be the best way to do the character so fingers crossed!!.
