BOX OFFICE: Green Lantern To Open With $20M On Friday

Following the $3.35M during midnight showings, Warner Bros and Martin Campbell's comic book adaptation Green Lantern is set to open with $20M for Friday. More after the jump!

Green Lantern (3D) is off to a solid start. Film opened with almost the same numbers as Thor (3D) and X-Men: First Class (2D), and now new reports are saying that comic book adaptation is set to get another $20M for Friday.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

"Warner Bros.' 3D superhero pic Green Lantern -- starring Ryan Reynolds -- is on track to cross $20 million at the Friday box office, giving it a shot at a $57 million to $60 million debut over Father's Day weekend, according to early estimates. Friday's tally includes $3.4 million in midnight grosses."

I'm going to say it will finish with $55-56M by the end of the weekend. Not bad for a film panned by almost everyone. Also, expect a big drop next week since it's not getting good buzz and it will go against new PIXAR film, Cars 2. How much do you think Green Lantern will earn this weekend? Stay tuned for more updates.

Well, I hope it makes enough to green light a sequel (haha... green light... ;P)

Where's LEE? I'm curious what he thinks of this movie.

This movie will still make money. Once Reynolds is in a movie with his top off, word will spread and the ladies will flock. Plus, it's basically a sci fi chick flick anyway! I doubt it will have much cash trouble..it [frick]ing deserves to though.

It's embarassing that people get so swayed by reviews and/or critics, just shows what kind of people are out in the world. These people can't even like something without worrying what other people have to say about it or what people will think of them if they do like it. World of assholes and cowards. You should be embarassed.

if the rumor is true that Warner Bros. wants a Justice League movie by 2013, then they better get to work yesterday on Green Arrow, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, and The Flash.

What's wrong with taking reviews of a movie into account before you go and see it? Sure, they don't always match up with the general public but they're usually a good guideline.

And I agree, 55mil is a good number for all the crap reviews it's getting.

i hope this movie doesn't make it. If they reboot this and Mark Strong is in his late 50's, they still better cast him as Sinestro.

@Vital
It is a good thing I am not one of those weak minded fools.
Why else am I going to go and enjoy this movie, in spite of its reviews; and not go see another movie which is well liked by the critics.

I mean, I consider the most B rated and crappiest of films to be my most favorite of films to watch (including all video game movies before Uwe Boll, The Hangover 2, films shown in MST3K, Troma movies, and every single slasher horror films).
If Green Lantern are any of those movies, well I say that will be the most entertaining comic book movie in my opinion.
Rango

hope it does well ,I want a FLASH movie!!!

But $60-$65 mill is disappointing for a $300 mill budget movie and the critics have trashed it,it must make atleast $500 mill ww to make any profit for such a humongous budget.

But anti-DC and pro marvel no need to make fun of our DC brethren as Captain America will be suffering a worse fate if not better.Reasons:
1.Lead Actor,a comic-relief/sidekick for a lead role in both cases..and lots of Confusion..Green Hornet in case of GL and Fantastic Four in case of Cap.
whoever saw the trailer asked "oh!!isn't he the fire guy from FF4?what if these two universe come together?is he Johnny's Grandpa or wat?
2.Joe Jhonston fresh from directing a box office disaster The Wolfman.
3.The Suit..in both cases they aren't accepted by majority for different reasons.
4.Both releasing cusped between biggies like Cars 2 in case of GL and HP8 in case of Cap.
5.Both of them B-list Superheroes,no presence outside the small minority of CBM nerds.
6.THE BIGGEST OF ALL: disastrous and ridiculously late marketing blitz.Still no Trailer 2?????for whom are you waiting MARVEL???

Currently if GL takes $60 opening,I wonder Cap TFA will even make $40 mill opening, and MARVEL doesn't seem to care.

$20 mil including the midnight screenings. So maybe $18 mil tomorrow and $15 mil on Sunday. So $53 mil and likely to drop more than 50% next weekend with Cars 2 and then TF3 comes.

It'll be lucky to get to $100 mil in the states with such bad reviews and PR.

CapFan79 - 6/17/2011, 7:40 PM
Well just like with sports, why go when you can watch it at home in HD with a home theater. If it sucks your out like $5 for renting instead of like $60 if you have kids and buy a drink and candy.

@ Rango I think you're way off with your assessment of Cap. Nobody is thinking about human torch or confusing Evans. Johnstons Wolfman wasn't his fault totally since he came in way late. Iron man was a B superhero and it was a hit. Thor has done well all things considered so I expect similar results. Cap is released after Transformers so it can win the opening weekend and hang around for a while since HP is the only decent thing after it.

I love the Cap outfit BTW.

I saw GL today, with my brother and my gf. He and I were quite satisfied as comic fans, and my gf liked it a lot too, despite not knowing about the character. I asked her if she thought it was confusing or convoluted at all, as that's what critics are saying, and she said no, and that she would like to see a sequel.

I don't get all the hate.
LoudLon
LoudLon - 6/17/2011, 7:59 PM
Read Roger Ebert's review earlier on his website. He gives it 2 1/2 stars, and says he enjoyed it much more than Thor (which he gave 1 1/2 stars).

I'm not a big DC fan, but I hope the film does well; the more successful CBM movies are, the more they'll make.

Now bring on Captain America!

@brianj22 -- hate much, do you? Dynamo's obviously a fan, and WANTED the film to be good, but was disappointed. That makes him a loser?

It's comments like yours that give fanboys a bad name. They also make you look really, really silly.

I have to agree with brianj22 and MrFloZeke. Saw it at midnight with several people who were fans and nonfans, everyone enjoyed the film and thought it was fun. The story was not confusing at all and for an intro film I think it did a good job. Dont get why so many people seem to hate on the film.
