UPDATE: Green Lantern Box Office Takings Drop 72% In The Space Of Just One Week!

Sitting at 26% on Rotten Tomatoes right now, we already know that that Green Lantern is a critical flop, but it now looks like the same can be said for its box office takings! Hit the jump for details...

Here is an excerpt from Deadline's latest box office report. If you're interested in reading the whole thing, head on over there by clicking the link below.

Green Lantern 3D (Warner Bros) Week 2 [3,816 Theaters]
Friday $6M (-72%), Estimated Weekend $19.4M (-63%), Estimated Cume $91M

This is pretty poor, especially when compared to the other recently released comic book movies like THOR and X-Men: First Class. The former took $9.1 million on its second Friday, while the latter raked in $7.7 million. While these changes may not appear to be that significant (neither were that far off Green Lantern is the percentage they dropped) the fact that the latest movie from Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment is rumored to have had a budget of $300 million, makes it far from the success that was originally predicted.

When you factor in what Green Lantern has made around the rest of the world, it would be unfair to call it a financial flop, but I'd say the chances of a sequel after such a moderate return (and the numerous poor reviews and undoubtedly bad word of mouth) are very slim. Perhaps most embarressing is the fact that X-Men: First Class, a movie which has been out since the beginning of the month, actually made only $4 million less than Green Lantern in the US this Friday.

Bet none of us would have predicted that this time last month, huh?

UPDATE: The news for Green Lantern keeps getting worse. It's seriously under performing overseas as well as Deadline point out in their updated box office report.

The superhero fell apart its second weekend. Worse, there's little green overseas where grosses for Green Lantern never got off the ground: Friday showed a -60% drop from its soft opening in the UK alone. After this humiliation, Warner Bros needs to rethink how it mines its DC Comics library without Chris Nolan producing/directing/writing everything.
