GREEN LANTERN HBO Max Series Still "Very Much Alive" But May Not Arrive Until 2024

The live-action Green Lantern series in development for HBO Max is reportedly still "very much alive", but we probably won't see the show until 2024. Read on for more details...

The recent axing of Batgirl has led to concerns that other upcoming DC Comics-based HBO Max projects could suffer the same fate under David Zaslav, as the Warner Bros. Discovery boss recently made it clear that he plans to prioritize theatrical releases over streaming.

While Barbara Gordon's feature debut is highly unlikely to be the last cancellation, it sounds like the upcoming live-action Green Lantern series from Seth Grahame-Smith and Marc Guggenheim is still on track... for the time being, at least.

An HBO Max representative has told TV Line that the series is “very much alive” and “definitely moving forward,” but probably won't hit our screens until 2024.

The DC's Strange Adventures anthology series we first heard about back in 2020 was not so lucky, however, as Kevin Smith revealed that the show has been scrapped during the latest episode of his Hollywood Babble-On podcast.

Specific plot details for the show are still under wraps, but we do know that the story will play out over multiple time-periods. Finn Wittrock will play Guy Gardner for the '80s-setting, with Jeremy Irvine on board as Alan Scott in the '40s. Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz and a new alien Lantern named Bree Jarta will also feature, but have yet to be cast (as far as we know).

Lee Toland Krieger, who helmed the Superman and Lois pilot for The CW, has signed on to direct the first two episodes.

UPDATE: It seems the solo Black Canary movie is also still in active development.

@Origame -
Assumptions. This is one of the big opportunities for DC and it should really be big screen if you ask me.

@Goldboink - eh. I can understand why not films considering the 2011 movie.

@Goldboink - I agree, especially cause Green Lantern is a CGI heavy hero and not sure if it will have enough budget to give it justice.

I like the idea, but I don’t see this going forward at all

As long as it's still alive. With that being said, it was disappointing Diggle from Arrow basically gave up potentially joining the Corps. I thought it would've been a great arc for the character.

Back then I remember reading what was probably a rumor that this Green Lantern show was going to have the tone of the Watchmen series, hopefully it was just hearsay because I don't think that sets the right mood for that lore. Especially coming from something that is being an exec-produced by Berlanti too.

But maybe the other thing I read about it being set up as an anthology was true. If not it would be interesting if the stories of Alan Scott and the events in his episode(s) have a connective tissue with Guy's and so on.

Seems the other DC shows on the streaming are safe too.

Not surprising, since Zaslav seems to think of the core JL members as a "brand". It's sad, and fortunate for all the wrong reasons, but for now that show seems to be safe from Warner's guillotine.
