BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Hits $300M Domestic; $600M Worldwide
James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy has now hit the $300 million mark both in North America and overseas, giving the latest movie from Marvel Studios an incredible haul of $600 million worldwide before it even reaches China! Hit the jump for details...
According to The Wrap (who cite Disney as an official source on this news), Guardians of the Galaxy has now reached two more box office milestones by hitting the $300 million mark both domestically and overseas. It's the highest grossing release of 2014 in North America, topping fellow Marvel Studios release Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($259.7 million) and another release starring Chris Pratt, The LEGO Movie ($257.7 million). Behind them is Transformers: Age of Extinction with $244.8 million, though it remains the #1 movie worldwide with over $1 billion.
Unfortunately for Guardians of the Galaxy, it won't remain at #1 this weekend after an additional three weeks at the top, as it was placed behind new releases No Good Deed and Dolphin Tale 2 yesterday. Regardless, it's now easy to see why Marvel gave a sequel the green light before the first was even released as the movie (which some said likely wouldn't even reach $300 million in total) has a worldwide cume of $600 million and counting! Whether a Chinese opening could push it towards the $700 million mark remains to be seen, but it's a huge success for director James Gunn and Marvel either way. How many times have you seen Guardians of the Galaxy?
