BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Hits $300M Domestic; $600M Worldwide

James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy has now hit the $300 million mark both in North America and overseas, giving the latest movie from Marvel Studios an incredible haul of $600 million worldwide before it even reaches China! Hit the jump for details...

According to The Wrap (who cite Disney as an official source on this news), Guardians of the Galaxy has now reached two more box office milestones by hitting the $300 million mark both domestically and overseas. It's the highest grossing release of 2014 in North America, topping fellow Marvel Studios release Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($259.7 million) and another release starring Chris Pratt, The LEGO Movie ($257.7 million). Behind them is Transformers: Age of Extinction with $244.8 million, though it remains the #1 movie worldwide with over $1 billion.

Unfortunately for Guardians of the Galaxy, it won't remain at #1 this weekend after an additional three weeks at the top, as it was placed behind new releases No Good Deed and Dolphin Tale 2 yesterday. Regardless, it's now easy to see why Marvel gave a sequel the green light before the first was even released as the movie (which some said likely wouldn't even reach $300 million in total) has a worldwide cume of $600 million and counting! Whether a Chinese opening could push it towards the $700 million mark remains to be seen, but it's a huge success for director James Gunn and Marvel either way. How many times have you seen Guardians of the Galaxy?

The first movie of an unknown and weird bunch of a-holes will beat the 3rd Cap, the 5th Spiderman and possible the 7th Xmen movie.
If Marvel is not throwing a party with a pool full of money is because they can't believe it.

BTW, if Guardians doesn't gross a billion worldwide, unless a miracle happens in China and Japan, I think it'll gross $800M worldwide ($330M domestically and $470M overseas or $325M domestically and $475M overseas).

318-325 domestic
315-325 international
110-120 China
743-770 worldwide

And it could still be higher, what if Japan loves it just like Frozen or China makes a lot more, it could reach 800 millions

My favorite movie of the year, though others were not too far behind; Cap, Xmen, Apes, Edge were all great, but this one hit on all the right spots for me...still a tad surprised the international numbers aren't better, regardless...major win for Disney/Marvel!

I'm really hyped about Dr Strange and The Inhumans. Although, i do think that Doctor Strange should delve in to the Supernatural side of the MCU, there for we get an introduction to other known Supernatural themed characters.

HonEstly this is just me thinking this personally but, Marvel Studio will never have any flops(next 10 years at least). I think all their movies will do decent or big business and ppl hoping these movies(Antman Is 1 them) will be disappointed

rebellion- it's possible depending on how well it does in china and japan, DOFP made $745,837,321 globally, guardians is at $600,000,000 after roughly 6 weeks. DOFP made $116,000,000 in china and cap made $115,000,000 in china. if GOTG makes a similar number in china it is possible it could overtake DOFP globally although it would be difficult.
