Marvel Had GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Screening For Disabled Rocket Co-Creator

In 1976, comic book writer, Bill Mantlo, created Rocket Raccoon, along with artist Keith Giffen. Sadly, things took a turn for the worse for Bill when he was involved in a hit-and-run accident in 1992. This left the talented scribe with a traumatic brain injury. Thanks to Bleeding Cool (click here for photos) we have a great feel-good story. His brother, Michael Mantlo, informed the site that his brother Bill was provided with a special Guardians of the Galaxy screening from Marvel Studios.

*****WHAT AN INCREDIBLE DAY FOR BILL MANTLO*****! Marvel hooked Bill up with a PRIVATE VIEWING of “Guardians Of The Galaxy”, and my wife Liz and my beloved cousin Jean assisted Bill throughout, enabling him to sit back, relax and relish in the AWESOMENESS of what is going to be, in my humble opinion, Marvel’s GREATEST AND MOST SUCCESSFUL FILM EVER! Bill thoroughly enjoyed it, giving it his HIGHEST COMPLIMENT (the BIG “THUMB’S UP!”), and when the credits rolled, his face was locked into the HUGEST SMILE I HAVE EVER SEEN HIM WEAR (along with one or two tears of joy)! This was the GREATEST DAY OF THE LAST 22 YEARS for me, our family, and most importantly, BILL MANTLO!

The gentlemen that made it possible for Bill to see his creation, ROCKET RACCOON, come alive in “Guardians Of The Galaxy”, Marvel Attorney David Althoff (far left) and Marvel VP David Bogart (center). Giving Bill this opportunity was a daunting challenge (with all the legal & security protocols that needed to be breached), but these two FINE MEN made it happen, and Bill had the HAPPIEST DAY OF HIS LIFE! I will NEVER be able to thank them enough for all that they have done for Bill!
- Michael Mantlo

Also, despite some rumors, Michael happily reports that Marvel/Disney have treated his brother more than fairly in regards to the rights to Rocket Raccoon. Furthermore, Michael says, "Marvel has made incredibly generous gestures apart from this particular contract to assist in Bill’s ongoing care & rehabilitation."

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team—the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy's fate in the balance.

Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, featuring Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. James Gunn is the director and the story is by Nicole Perlman and James Gunn, with screenplay by James Gunn. It releases in U.S. theaters on August 1, 2014.

I feel like I'm the only person on this website that hasn't watched this movie. I spent the weekend playing golf and getting drunk instead.

Way to go Marvel! Bill Mantlo is one of my favorite writers! He wrote Iron Man (vol 1) #78, #86–87, and #95-115!

@b&y We do get Marvel movies a week earlier usually. This 'a month later' thing only happened with TFA and GotG... No idea why

@Phoeny Yeah, you guys have it even worse than us Germans with our August 28 release. Really don't know why they messed with their usual scheduling. :(

I'd invite you to join a little trip to Denmark me and some friends are going to go on this Saturday to watch GOTG, but I guess that's hardly feasible. ^^'

@article

That's a really good thing! All the best to Mr Mantlo! :)

Just wish we could've gotten this without the bickering and the kind of inappropriate threats of banning folks. But at least it seems to be cool now.

@Kyos I wish I could come, but I'm going on vacation on Saturday. Thanks for the offer though :P Have fun there, I've heard Denmark is beautiful!

And btw, Italy is the worst, imdb says October 22nd!!! I'm just hoping that many Greeks will see GotG so that they won't do something like this with a Marvel movie again...

Going on vacation sounds great, hope you'll have a good time! :) I won't get my first vacation this year until [frick]ing November, but at least it'll be all of November then. Ah well, my fault for not taking some earlier and then taking on a new job in the middle of the year, where of course everyone else already had theirs planned.

@B&Y nah, I haven't seen it yet either man. Freakin work. As for this, Marvel gets my utmost respect for treating this guy well. I can't imagine how awesome it would be to watch a comic creation of mine come to life.

I never heard about Mantlo. I assumed he was still writing somewhere. He was one of the real writers who wrote real entertainment in the 70s and 80s before writers began writing boring garbage and leaping from stunt to stunt.

There are some VERY special scenes with Rocket, ones of deep emotion that really flesh out his character and the tortured little soul in that furry body.

And those scenes hit home the hardest for me.

I've said it before, those scenes made me tear up BIG time.

And I know those scenes hit Bill right in the soul.

Thanks, Marvel Studios.

Not just for the incredible movies and all the fun of anticipation.

But because you are GOOD eggs.

What y'all did for Bill?

That's being a REAL mensch.

I forgot to say this, and I am kicking myself in the ass for not saying this already:

Bill.

THANK You.

Rocket Raccoon was the one character I was most excited to see on the big screen in this film, and that says a lot, because Thanos, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Star Lord, Ronan the Accuser, Groot and Rhomann Dey were all in this film, too.

But Rocket is the little guy I most wanted to see.

I know James Gunn gave justice to your vision of Rocket.

And thank you, Sir, for creating him in the first place.

This world is a better place because Bill Mantlo dwells in it.

Amazing, amazing thing to read. I remember reading all about Bill Mantlo in a feature Wizard Magazine wrote about the guy and becoming fascinated with his story. Truly cool to learn he finally got to see his creation up on the big screen... in what appears to be a blast of a movie. :D
