Don't Expect Any GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 News At D23 This Weekend

Next to Civil War, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is one of Marvel's most exciting Phase 3 projects. Fans may be disappointed to learn then, that James Gunn has revealed he won't be on hand with any sequel news at this weekend's D23 Expo. Read on for more!

We already know that Marvel will debut the first teaser for Captain America: Civil War at Disney's D23 Expo this weekend, but sadly it looks like there won't be any news on the Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 front. That's according to the movie's writer/director James Gunn, who took to Twitter yesterday to confirm he would not be in attendance, claiming that they still did not have "anything substantial" to announce yet regarding the highly anticipated sci-fi sequel.

Given that the film is still almost two years away, this seems fair enough. However, with Gunn having recently started pre-production, you have to wonder how far away we are from some casting news. Regardless, for the moment fans can instead look forward to finding out more about Marvel's more imminent projects this weekend - such as Civil War and Doctor Strange. Which Phase 3 movie would you like to see more of at D23? Drop us your thoughts in the comments below!

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is set to hit theatres
on May 5, 2017.

We have the script finished and all the actors have read it, but we're not telling any of you guys anything yet.

Bastards.

Well... I mean, it's a year before they even shoot. The script isn't even done. I wouldn't expect news on it. Just Civil War and maybe some Dr. Strange news.

Given that it's two years away, I didn't expect anything anyway.

I really hope they release some stills at least from this event, I need a sense of what Civil War will be like visually, same goes for Strange, throw some concept art into the public.

You really think that they won't reveal the Spider-Man costume or show any footage with Spider-Man?

"We just aren't ready to announce anything substantial yet for #GotGVol2"

... Well, you have that extra character that you're excited about (man or woman), and you won't tell us anything about. I'm sure we'd take that if nothing else.

I haven't been this disappointed since Comic-Con...when WB/DC didn't announce their 2021 to 2031 slate.

GoTG was absolutely amazing. Watched it again last week. It's a great MOVIE, not only a CBM. 80's fun ride, like BTTF or Indiana Jones.

Whatever. That movie is forever away. We got James Bond, Star Wars, BvS, Civil War, Ninja Turtles, Dr. Strange etc etc etc before then. So far from my brain at this point.

Not surprised or upset. Movie's a long ways off. The Civil War and Dr. Strange stuff will sufficiently wet the internet's proverbial panties.

I wasn't really expecting anything major for GOTG 2 at this year's D23. Although, since D23 is done every 2 years, GOTG 2 falls into that 2 year window so I expect at least a mention by Feige.

In 2013, Feige had cast members for Thor 2, Cap 2 and GOTG 2 at D23 as all those movies were in either post, filming or preproduction at that time. It was too early for AOU -so that production and its actors didn't attend. I figure that's the same for GOTG 2 which hasn't entered into preproduction yet. There should be no shock here about GOTG 2 not attending D23 this year.

Any Marvel fan out there KNOWS that the period between Ant-Man and Civil War is going to be the longest lull in activity for the MCU. It's why Marvel didn't attend SDCC. It's why this year's D23, Marvel isn't going to be a huge presence. We'll probably only get Civil War stuff and talk about Doctor Strange, (hopefully some concept art) which is in pre-production. There just aren't enough ongoing projects happening at the momemnt -especially when Marvel pushed back a 2016 movie, Doctor Strange, from July to November. This is Marvel's downtime but that will change shortly.

I expect a Marvel presence at NYCC. At least for Netflix, which should provide us a look at Jessica Jones and Daredevil season 2. A possible Marvel Television panel to talk Agent Carter season 2, premiering in January, with most likely Agents Of SHIELD attached. A probable Marvel Studios panel for Civil War. Every year Marvel didn't attend SDCC -they attended NYCC. So if Marvel Studios skips NYCC this year -it sets a precedent. We'll know if Marvel attends or skips NYCC by mid-September.

Next year in 2016, Marvel should be attending SDCC. Netflix should be promoting Luke Cage by SDCC since that series starts filming sometime this month. Unless Netflix is serious about premiering a Marvel show every 6 months and pushes Luke Cage to 2016 Fall/Winter. Marvel Studios should be promoting Doctor Strange and GOTG 2 since both movies are in post-production or filming. Sony should be promoting Spider-Man since that production would be filming. Not sure if Marvel will bring Thor: Ragnarok -they might save that for SDCC'17 or D23 that year.

In 2017, there will be a lot of productions to talk about. Marvel will probably skip SDCC that year and present at D23 and/or NYCC appropriately. Marvel Studios has Thor: Ragnarok in post. Infinity War Part 1 & Part 2 in post. Black Panther filming. That's 3 or 4 movies to promote. THAT's the D23 people will be talking about. This year -not so much. But during thie dry time for Marvel fans -anything is better than nothing.

Loks like all we'll get is Civil War and Dr. Strange from MS. Maybe some info on the Netflix shows.

I just want something about Civil War and Dr. Strange. I think the full trailer of Civil will be in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and that will be the best way to promote the movie.

I have to correct myself about my previous post. Feige only talked about GOTG in 2013 -the actors didn't attend. Anyhow, if anyone was curious to Marvel's presentation at D23 in 2013. Here are some videos. The 2nd video only has Feige talking about GOTG at the beginning. The rest is other Disney stuff.

Eh. Never thought we would get anything from GOTG2 anyway. I assumed Civil War and Doc. Strange would get the most attention.

@AbhiShake
D stands for Disney of course.
23 stands for the year Disney was founded in 1923.
