Masters Of The Universe Director Says The Movie "Deserved A Better Fate Than It Got" From Amazon

Masters of the Universe director Travis Knight admits the movie deserved a better fate after its disappointing box office run. Could its streaming success convince Amazon to bring He-Man back for a sequel?

Despite largely positive reviews, Masters of the Universe grossed only $114 million at the worldwide box office. The movie was considered a box office flop, but quickly became a streaming hit when it debuted on Prime Video.

Was being at #1 for five straight weeks enough to convince Amazon MGM Studios to move forward with a sequel? Given that the first instalment cost as much as $200 million, that's a big ask, but it could happen.

When The Hollywood Reporter spoke with filmmaker Travis Knight, he appeared dissatisfied with how Masters of the Universe's release was handled...even if that streaming success could ultimately be what leads to the story continuing.

"Its life on streaming was much more important to Amazon than its life in the theaters," Knight explained. "It’s not something I understood going into it. I wanted their faith in us as filmmakers and in the movie to be rewarded in a way that wasn’t to my hopes and expectations. The film deserved a better fate than it got, but I’ve made peace with it."

Whether the door is closed on him returning isn't clear, but the trade notes that Amazon insiders countered by saying the company considers the "complementary value of theatrical and streaming when greenlighting a project."

During a separate interview with ScreenRant, Knight was asked how likely he believes Masters of the Universe 2 is. Reminding fans that the decision isn't down to him, he emphasised that he's proud of the movie he made for fans of the beloved franchise.

"These things are out of our control. It was such a joy making that movie; I had so much fun working with that team," Knight enthused. "We had so much fun, and I think that comes through in the experience of watching the movie."

"In the end, these sorts of decisions are out of our control; you always imagine where these people’s lives go after the end of the movie, and if the universe, in its wisdom, asks us to make more of these things, we would be delighted to give them more."

"But, in the end, that’s out of our control," he continued, "which is why every single movie you make, you put everything you have into it, and you just hope that the movie lives on its own and finds connection with the people you’re trying to reach."

Masters of the Universe told a complete story, but also ended in a way that set the stage for She-Ra to make her debut in a potential sequel.

Lauren Saliu, who played She-Ra in the movie's post-credits scene, previously told us, "I mean, I'd be absolutely open to [a sequel]. To play a character like that would be an amazing opportunity. I would be super grateful. And to be able to use my skills as well that I've worked hard to develop would also be amazing to incorporate into a role."

"So yeah, if he comes calling, let's talk. If he thinks there's someone else he has in mind that would be more suited for the role, then fine. But I'm a big believer in whatever is meant to be will be."

In Masters of the Universe, director Travis Knight brings the legendary franchise back to the big screen in this epic live-action adventure. After 15 years apart, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) back to Eternia, where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto).

To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe.

Masters of the Universe is now streaming on Prime Video.

Street Fighter also deserves more. It's dumb AF, but unlike Clayface it knows it.

Man, woman, whatever age you might be, somewhere inside you there is a teenage boy. Go watch Street Fighter and give that teenage boy life again.

The movie made zero sense.

Example: a character says "What's going on?" while being chased, and the 4 Non Blondes song "What's Going On?" starts playing on the soundtrack.

It's far worse than Bumblebee.

That movie is unwatchable. I could never make it all the way through.

There are some performances and visuals I liked in that movie.
I love that it didn’t take itself seriously
I kind of forgave that the entire plot falls apart in the third act. Look, that’s not a concession I should have to make.
And I have no problem with film being joke laden. What ruined a lot of my fun is that only one of the jokes was funny.
If you’re going to make the sword a signal for the bad guys in act one, you can’t make it just a psychological tool for Adam in act three.
And if you’re going to joke up your script, man those jokes have to land

I think the movie is terrible as a movie. It's just not great, and I don't know if this was the intent or not but what they made was a perfect He-Man movie. Unfortunately, most of the audience went to see a good movie and that just wasn't there. I enjoyed it even in the worst parts of it. It was fun and poked the right amount of fun at the source and itself.

This movie almost went full Love and Thunder… if they could go a little more serious instead of goofy AF then I’d like it.

@RolandD - same. there was a UHF channel that showed the late 1930s serials. They weren't bad at all. My dad would watch them with us, he remembers them well at the movie theater in the 1950s when he was a kid.

Very mid/average film. Honestly, I’m tired of ironic comedies, give me a serious heroic epic.

You watch a Snyder movie like Sucker Punch or Revel Moon where the plot is stupid and takes itself WAY too seriously. 😐😂

I love the comments by Knight , all you can really do is indeed put everything you have in the film you are making and hope others connect to it aswell…

I did not realize that MOTU was no 1 on Amazon Prime for five weeks so if they do still see value in this IP or atleast this iteration of it then I could see perhaps an animated series with as much of the cast from the movie back for the show that is set in the same continuity after the film but fingers crossed!!.

Personally I found the movie to be enjoyable but was held back by the hit or miss humor for me , otherwise I did like the cast & characters to varying degrees…

Also the music & especially the main theme rocked!!.

Fun movie, if the humor is on your wavelength… definite Flash Gordon and Ragnarok vibes.

Never thought I’d say this, but Leto’s Skeletor stole the show!

@InfraMan - Yeah , Flash Gordon & Ragnarok (which itself took inspiration from the former) are definitely good comparisons to this imo tonally.

Also Leto’s Skeletor was definitely the MVP.

@RolandD - lol not surprising

People not just here but social media in general tend to begin to dislike something months after it comes out now

Then they’ll reassess that same thing ten years or so later and say it was great.

There’s no appreciation in the moment.

@TheVisionary25 - I recall that most of the people who said that they liked it when 1st came out were people who comment on here very frequently such as yourself and many others. I think a lot of the people who criticize it on this article are not as frequent contributors here so it’s different people at least I am not a fan of this property at all although enough people here said that they liked it enough that I might give it to watch at some point in time.

If this were made very cheaply as a streaming movie, it could have been a mild success for its fans, but there aren't nearly enough of them to support a big budget theatrical release. They proved that with that surprisingly pretty good movie that bombed at the box office.
