Masters Of The Universe Streaming Viewership Plummets 50% After Prime Video Debut

A sequel to Masters of the Universe was already looking unlikely. However, the He-Man reboot's latest Nielsen numbers suggest its disappointing theatrical run won't be saved by its Prime Video debut.

Masters of the Universe was supposed to launch a new Amazon MGM Studios franchise. Instead, it's become the latest example of a movie that failed to find an audience at the box office before arriving on streaming.

Unfortunately, despite lots of positive chatter about it topping the charts on Amazon's streaming platform, Prime Video, it may not have been that big a hit.

As we first reported on SFFGazette.comMasters of the Universe debuted at #1 on Nielsen's overall streaming chart for the week of July 20 to July 26, recording an impressive 1.17 billion minutes viewed. However, the latest numbers show that interest in the movie dropped off dramatically during its second week.

For the week of July 27 to August 2, Masters of the Universe fell completely out of Nielsen's Top 10 overall streaming chart. Among movies, it ranked fourth with 588 million minutes viewed, a staggering 50% drop from its opening week.

This suggests fans and curious viewers showed up for its debut, but long-term interest may be minimal. Masters of the Universe 2 happening will ultimately depend on what Amazon considers a "success."

The Devil Wears Prada 2 topped the movie chart with 885 million minutes viewed, while The Super Mario Galaxy Movie also benefited from making its streaming debut that week. Kevin Hart's poorly reviewed Netflix comedy 72 Hours rounded out the Top 3 with 734 million minutes viewed.

Masters of the Universe carried a reported $170 million production budget, but grossed just $114 million worldwide. That fell well below the amount needed to recoup its production costs once marketing and other expenses are taken into account.

While a strong Prime Video performance could have helped soften that blow, these latest Nielsen figures suggest the reboot may struggle to become the streaming hit Amazon needs it to be. A sequel was already unlikely, but this latest update isn't likely to help its chances.

An impressive streaming performance leading to another $170+ million movie was always a bit of a pipe dream, but stranger things have happened. For now, it seems He-Man, Skeletor, and the rest of the franchise's iconic characters are back on the shelf.

You can check out our interview with Lauren Saliu, who played She-Ra in Masters of the Universe's post-credits scene, below.

In Masters of the Universe, director Travis Knight brings the legendary franchise back to the big screen in this epic live-action adventure. After 15 years apart, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) back to Eternia, where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto).

To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe.

The supporting cast includes Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Morena Baccarin as The Sorceress, James Purefoy as King Randor, Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Fisto, Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson as Goat Man, Jon Xue Zhang as Ram-Man, Stephen Adentan as Moss Man, James Wilkinson as Mekaneck, and Kristen Wiig as Roboto.

Masters of the Universe is now streaming on Prime Video.

The curse of Leto strikes again!

Whatever will he foul up next?

@UltimaRex - Sadly, I don't think it was a curse this time as much as it was an Ezra like reaction, a bong, and film that seemingly couldn't find enough of an audience. To put it simply...I am apparently old.

Would it have done better if it was darker and more serious? Or do audiences simply don't care about the characters anymore?

@LiquidSwords - I felt He-Man needed a more prominent moviestar, Galatzine needed to grow more before carry a movie like this.

@LiquidSwords - it’s the fact that there is a small market for this movie. Old men like me and my brother, we saw it in theaters and loved it. Watched it again on streaming and still loved it. But it’s a movie made for 40 something year old men

@campblood - Does a theater release boost or hurt streaming numbers when it arrives compared to just going streaming right out of the gate?

A lot of the character designs were great. But I did not care for how they portrayed Duncan and He-Man. He-Man spent most of the movie acting more like Cringer.

Will there be any articles about Coyote vs Acme probably not breaking even and earning back its cost? Seems to be nearly no reporting on how little money it's making against it's $70M budget and $50M purchase by Ketchup Entertainment.

Then again, scummy "news" organization do have a narrative they need to push in order to get those clicks for ad revenue.

I personally loved it and thought it was loads of fun but it did bomb. It took off the first week and crashed on Prime, but that’s okay. This movie has “cult hit” written all over it and I’m fine just rewatching it for a third time

The viewer has 2 choices, say nothing and hope no one ever asks if they saw the He-Man movie or they can tell their kith and kin all about it. Week two numbers suggest they talked.

Let's see how much they made on merchandise because time will be good to this movie. It's exactly what it needed to be. Still writing ragebait and rumors when you could've milked Batman Knightfall and Coyote vs Acme. The story behind the latter is a big [frick]ing deal and the WW opening weekend total is a big deal. Censorship is a big deal. But lets get some more crap about Gal Gadot and movie posters..
I don't want to write articles, once I start I wont stop and I'll beat everyone to every scoop and news

I predicted the James Gunn disaster when his DCU was announced. His Superman failed for the same reason Fantastic Four & He-Man failed. The first movie needs to be small & intimate with one mission: get the main character over. It doesn't need to be epic or have a cast of hundreds or in Gunn's case, thousands of characters.

All 3 of those movies went big in the first movie. Superman didn't need to set up a big plotline for the DCU. The movie needed to make guys wish they were Superman & make women wish they could have him. He had to be a hero to kids. People had to like him. Same for He-Man. Neither movie even attempted to get characters over and you can look back to before the 90s to see that Hollywood once knew how to do all of that.

Hollywood used to have pros. Like comics, it became a bunch of amateurs.

@ManDeth - I wouldn't say MOTU is a big movie, it feels too small and insignificant, even though there's a battle for Eternos. The final battle isn't much bigger than the fight at the airport in Captain America: Civil War.

It was an okay film. The visuals looked good, the action was quite good, I thought it had a good cast. But something about the dialogue and humor and writing missed the mark a bit.

Huh? It was top streamed movie in the US on Prime for like 6 weeks?
LeonNova
LeonNova - 9/1/2026, 5:23 PM
I’m no expert on these things, but it’s not like it’s a tv series with weekly released episodes. Most people aren’t just watching a movie over and over again, so I’d imagine there be a drop after a few weeks.

TheVisionary25 - 9/1/2026, 5:28 PM
That sucks but I could see Amazon Prime consider it a success and make a streaming exclusive sequel like they are doing with Voltron but seems like a long shot…

Anyway i felt MOTU was a decently enjoyable film with heart that had well done action & visuals as well as likable heroes and fun villains (Leto’s Skeletor being the MVP imo) but the humor of the film was hit or miss and given it was fairly prevalent , i felt it held the movie back unfortunately.

However i think there was still a nice foundation set that i would like to see explored further , especially with the introduction of She-Ra!!.

I see 3 reasons why this movie didn't become a hit.

1. He-Man sucks;
2. He-Man is uninteresting to modern audiences;
3. The movie is average, predictable, and overly self-ironic. It feels like it was directed by Taika Waititi.

It would be better if they filmed a cool and epic He-Man like in the artworks, instead of another MCU clone.

I mean, that's pretty normal no? Are people supposed to come back and watch it over and over again? Anyway for those who haven't seen it, it's actually pretty decent for a silly movie and has bunch of really funny moments. But I guess where in the cancel period where everything must be crapped on. In a few years people will be claiming this was a cult icon lol!
