CANDYMAN Scares Up A $20.7 Million After Slicing Its Way Through The Competition With Ease

Variety reveals that Universal and MGM's Candyman reboot/sequel looks set to earn an impressive $20.7 million at the domestic box office this weekend, which is way ahead of early projections ($15 million). Even pre-pandemic, this would have been a solid result for a movie that only cost $25 million to make, and we'll hopefully have numbers from overseas to share with you soon.

Directed by Nia DaCosta and starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, and Colman Domingo, Candyman drew $9.1 million from theaters on Friday and is expected to add an additional $11 million today and tomorrow. Figures like these bode well for Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings next weekend, as that movie is also going to play exclusively on the big screen.

While Candyman sliced down the competition, this certainly wasn't a bad weekend for Disney and 20th Century's Free Guy. That looks set to earn $12 million - $14 million during its third weekend, pushing it up to $80 million domestically. Jungle Cruise, meanwhile, is nearing $100 million.

That's actually better than expected, especially as it's available on Disney+'s Premier Access for $29.99.

In our review of Candyman, we concluded by saying: "Deepening the franchise’s mythology with a timely and hard-hitting approach to the Candyman legend, Nia DaCosta delivers a horror movie that’s terrifying, thought-provoking, and a sign of great things to come from the filmmaker."

What did you guys decide to watch this weekend?

I really enjoyed Candyman in theaters last night it was about 3/4 full. I give it 4 Stars / 5 Stars.

Saw it last night. Solid. Not without its flaws, especially as it nears the end of the movie. It tries to do much with its messaging. It’s biggest flaw is the script starts high and ends low. The OG is still king.

Great kills and a great performance from Yahya and Coleman Domingo. Amazing direction from DaCosta. The visuals are something else.

I haven’t looked at a mirror since last night

@BlackBeltJones - Just got home from seeing it myself. I agree wholeheartedly with you. I give it major props for playing with the mythology in a why that respects the original while also having its own voice, but the third act could have used a bit of tweaking.

20 million!? Isn’t that considered a flop on this site?

@WruceBayne - not for a low budget horror film. For a $175+ million dollar film. Yes, that's a flop.

@ThorArms - what happens when you factor in a streaming service that has that movie on it?

@WruceBayne - The budget for this candyman was 25 million. I don't see how that is a flop

I saw it last night and I've got very mixed feelings. I'll start with what I liked first which is everything from the direction and acting was great and really well done. I enjoyed the use of mirror imagery DeCosta used in directing. The highlights for me in the acting was Yahya and Colm Domingo. Candyman wise I loved how they expanded the lore and the idea of a "Hive" being used as a method to always keep the legend growing and changing through the years. The original Candyman is one of my favorite horror films because of the way it explores the idea of a tragic story being past down and mythologized until it becomes urban legend and I think the new film elaborated on that idea really well.

Now to the bad, I'm all for social commentary in horror films it has been the bread and butter for horror since the begining, but man does it require a soft touch. When a film feels the need to hit you over the head with its message with the gentleness of a lead pipe it starts to lose the power of the message it's trying to convey to the audience. The third act was probably the worst offender of this. Overall it was still the best Candyman sequel and I love what it did with the mythology of the character, but it really needed to convey its message better. Side note and Mild SPOILER.... you bothered the great Tony Todd for that, come on that man deserved way more screen time.

@CurlyBill - Please don’t take this the wrong way, but this is the first Candyman film made almost entirely by the same race that it depicts. That’s a huge deal when it comes perspective and optics. I’m a white guy and I haven’t seen the film yet, but if the message is a bit heavy handed I’ll give Nia Decosta the benefit of the doubt.

Still no word on the Finnish premiere date, which is usually a sign of a movie going direct-to-DVD here :/

I watched last night, I thought it was okay, missed the subtlety of the original and the third act was really rushed. Also missed Tony Todd's charisma, like I know what they were going for...but Tony Todd was one of the biggest reasons the original is still well regarded.

I found enjoyment, probably a 3/5 for me, my roommate absolutely hated it lol, so may be mixed more than you'd think

Tony Todd deserved at least one great monologue, and he should have said "be my victim" at the end. Other than that I liked it. Funny jokes placed perfectly to cut the tension, could have used a little more gore but the deaths we're visceral and impactful. Also I love how the art gallery boss was named Clive haha

Seeing it tomorrow but great for Yahya, one of the most promising talents from this new generation of actors. His Manhattan is still a top 5 live action CB performance for me
