Variety reveals that Universal and MGM's Candyman reboot/sequel looks set to earn an impressive $20.7 million at the domestic box office this weekend, which is way ahead of early projections ($15 million). Even pre-pandemic, this would have been a solid result for a movie that only cost $25 million to make, and we'll hopefully have numbers from overseas to share with you soon.
Directed by Nia DaCosta and starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, and Colman Domingo, Candyman drew $9.1 million from theaters on Friday and is expected to add an additional $11 million today and tomorrow. Figures like these bode well for Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings next weekend, as that movie is also going to play exclusively on the big screen.
While Candyman sliced down the competition, this certainly wasn't a bad weekend for Disney and 20th Century's Free Guy. That looks set to earn $12 million - $14 million during its third weekend, pushing it up to $80 million domestically. Jungle Cruise, meanwhile, is nearing $100 million.
That's actually better than expected, especially as it's available on Disney+'s Premier Access for $29.99.
In our review of Candyman, we concluded by saying: "Deepening the franchise’s mythology with a timely and hard-hitting approach to the Candyman legend, Nia DaCosta delivers a horror movie that’s terrifying, thought-provoking, and a sign of great things to come from the filmmaker."
