FARGO SPOILERS: Season 5 Finale Leans Into Horror Elements With Supernatural Twist

Fargo has never shied away from introducing bizarre, unexplained and even sci-fi (remember that UFO?) elements, but the fifth season featured the show's first explicitly supernatural character...

“Anyone seen a man in a dress come through here, haircut like the Three Stooges?”

Over the course of its five seasons, FX's Fargo has often sprinkled in some strange or unexplained (we still have no idea what was going on with that UFO in season 2) elements, but the current season fully leaned into creator Noah Hawley's horror influences, with a Halloween setting, music cues from Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, and a character who is revealed to be a centuries-old supernatural being!

Introduced in the premiere, Sam Spruell's Ole Munch (pronounced Ola Munk) seems to be the usual stoic, ruthless killer-for-hire we often encounter in the world of Fargo, but an apparent flashback in a later episode seemingly suggests that he's been walking the Earth for a very long time.

In the scene, we see a man that looks a lot like our grouchy assassin hungrily devouring a plate of gruel at a funeral. This is an ancient custom known as "sin-eating," in which a person is paid to ritually eat a meal that represents the sins of the rich, in order for the dead man to be absolved of all past discretions.

There was speculation that this might simply be an ancestor of Ole's, but this week's season finale made it very clear that the ruthless villain turned ally of Dot (Juno Temple) is, in fact, the same Sin Eater, cursed to live in loneliness and shame... until he finally allows love and forgiveness into his heart with a bite of Dot's biscuit.

"There's the thing in Wales, the Sin Eater," director Thomas Bezucha explains to Inverse when asked if Munch is supposed to be human, or something else. "I think it was originally meant to be an ancestor of Munch. But part way through the season we decided maybe it is Munch and that he could be 500 years old. And if he's 500 years old, he can't die and he is cursed."

"You see it in the writing and Sam's performance," Bezucha continued. "He speaks about himself in the third person. He doesn't say me or I, he says 'a man.' There’s this dissociative quality to his presence on the Earth. He can disappear. He can appear. I loved him. He's sort of the Anton Chigurh, or who's the guy on the motorcycle in Raising Arizona? He's just this elemental force that's blowing through this landscape."

Certain characters have popped up in multiple seasons of Fargo, so is there a chance we might see Munch again? It's entirely possible, but we still don't know if a sixth season is even in the cards.

"We've had no substantive conversations. I got my fingers crossed," says Bezucha.

A man would be grateful.

Everyone has told me this show is awesome but I just can't get into it. I've tried 3 times.

@lazlodaytona - same...it's just way too much of a slow burn

@lazlodaytona - To each their own! It is personally my favorite show, but I understand the feeling of "slow burn." The plot is rarely the main focus and instead, it likes to stew in the interwoven character interactions more than move the action along. I'm particularly a fan of how the show frames Midwest-Nice vs. "Reality". A season 2 quote sums this up nicely:

Officer Lou Solverson, with Minnesotan charm: “We’re a very friendly people”
Kansas City Criminal Mike Milligan: “No, that’s not it. Pretty unfriendly actually. But it’s the way you’re unfriendly. How you’re so polite about it. Like you’re doin’ me a favor.”

@TheRose - I'm glad you enjoy it. My mother is a huge fan too. I usually like what my mom does and vice-versa, but not on this one.

@lazlodaytona - same here. I only managed to finish the first and third seasons. And that was because of the cast and not the weirdness

@lazlodaytona - The first two seasons were amazing but I haven't watched the other seasons.

Fargo TV show's overrated imo. I've watched the first two seasons a few times and I can't remember anything about either except the UFO, Bilbo Baggins being called the n-word, and uh... Ray Romano? Or Robert from Everybody Loves Ray Romano? And he was in the mob? I seem to remember a lot of great actors doing great performances, delivering pretty good dialogue in well shot scenes that all made me say "so what"

This season was great. One of the best. Last dead was a bit of a let down so it's good to see a return to form.

@Tpo81 - couldn’t get into last season, thought about revisiting it again but haven’t gotten around to it.

@LeDiableBlanc - I've been meaning to ask a fan this, should someone watch the movie before starting the show?

I've always been interested in starting it

But highly recommend the film anyway just because it’s such a great movie!

@Evansly - To answer your question , No not at all . It's not connected but the style and substance are all there and also he dynamics of an all star cast mostly in smaller roles . It really gives you time to get wrapped up in the plot and not need to be so attached to a single character . So it def uses its casting to its advantages .
I hope you check them all out and enjoi them

What the hell is fargo even about?
TheRose
TheRose - 1/18/2024, 2:51 PM
@Order66 - In broad terms, it's a crime show that primarily uses the Northern American Midwest as the setting. The show is an anthology series, with each season setting up its own plot. There are some easter eggs and concrete threads between the stories, but they are primarily focused on telling the narrative they set up in the 1st episode.

Almost always, there is a murder in episode 1 and the rest of the season follows the ramifications of that death. It often creates a web that entangles criminals, police, and everyday midwest-nice folks and sometimes leaves the door open to supernatural influence. The show is more about theme and character study than anything, but there is plenty of lore to keep avid fans theorizing.

@Order66 - To sum it all up it's pretty much about Cause and Effect and the way things can spiral out of our control due to quick decisions in a canadian and up north setting . All of the writing is pretty damn great . It's kind of a slow burn but often humorous in dark ways or Black Comedy

Absolutely loved this season. Didn’t have high expectations after 3 and 4 but this was a weekly watch I couldn’t wait for.

Props to Hawley and the whole team.

@regularmovieguy - Season 3 is one of the most wild story telling I've ever seen, but I also know that it is not for everyone. It's my favorite of the tales for how it leans into the absurd and uncertainty. Week to week made the season quite the head scratcher, but as a whole story, it stands out as peak Fargo to me.

@TheRose

I liked S3 but didn’t love it the way I did S1 and S2. S4 was a step down for the show.

Excellent season, especially after S4 which I could not finish. The show overall has been incredibly entertaining, a good follow up to the movie. Loved the character of Munch too.

FU for putting a spoiler in the title. It’s not even CBM related and you still had to [frick] it up for anyone who didn’t watch it last night. Fuuuuuuccckkk yoooouuuu!
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/18/2024, 5:01 PM
@Dotanuki - what exactly is spoilery about it? I get it being supernatural is new to the show, but the season already set it up right?
Dotanuki
Dotanuki - 1/18/2024, 5:20 PM
@MarkCassidy - I’ve seen all of the episodes except for the finale. And yes, there has been a supernatural element but exclaiming that it plays into the finale is total horseshit. Since I haven’t watched the ep, it’s possible that the FBI have a throwdown with Roy and then Munch just doesn’t appear again. His last scene with Dot in E9 could be his last. See? No supernatural themes in the finale since he was the only character that would fit that.

So shove your guarantee or “being dense” up your ass.

Had no idea this show had a season 5, let alone a season 5 of which the finale already aired. Last thing I remember was the announcement of season 4

Hamm and Spruell were the MVPs of this season along with Temple.
