Legendary filmmaker Wes Craven, director and writer of horror classics such as Scream, A Nightmare On Elm Street, & The Hills Have Eyes, passed away Sunday at his Los Angeles home. He was 76 years old. Come pay your respects here.
After a long battle with brain cancer, legendary director/writer Wes Craven passed away Sunday at the age of 76. He was with his family in his Los Angeles home at the time of his passing.
The filmmaking icon directed twenty-eight films in a career spanning forty years and was best known for launching multiple horror franchises including A Nightmare On Elm Street, Scream, and The Hills Have Eyes.
Craven made his feature film directorial debut in 1972 with The Last House On The Left, which he followed up with The Hills Have Eyes in 1977 and Swamp Thing in 1982. In 1984, he brought Freddy Krueger, one of the most terrifying horror villains of all-time, to life when he directed and wrote the first Nightmare On Elm Street. In 1994, Craven once again reinvented the horror genre when he directed and wrote Wes Craven's New Nightmare, which earned him a Spirit Awards nomination. Two years later, in 1996, Craven gave birth to another iconic horror villain, Ghostface, when he directed his most successful film to date: Scream, which spoofed the teen horror genre and starred Neve Campbell in the lead. He would go on to direct all three Scream sequels. 2011's Scream 4 was his final directorial venture.
He is survived by his wife of eleven years, Iya Labunka; sister Carol Buhrow, his two children from a previous marriage, Jonathan & Jessica Craven; stepdaughter Nina Tarnawksy; and three grandchildren.
