The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Underwater director Will Eubank and writer Christopher Landon are teaming up to reboot the Paranormal Activity franchise.

Landon is no stranger to the series, and wrote four of the previous films before finding success with Happy Death Day as a filmmaker in his own right. His screenplay is described by the trade's insiders as an "unexpected retooling" of the franchise, so it sounds like the concept is being overhauled.

However, it's noted that, "Plot details for the new outing are being kept behind the lens but it is known that it will continue to the found footage device."

Also behind the scenes are Blumhouse's Jason Blum and Paranormal Activity creator Oren Peli as producers. Steven Schneider has signed on as an executive producer, while Landon will also produce.

The films are based around a family haunted by a demon that stalks, terrifies and ultimately murders them and other unlucky bystanders from chapter to chapter. The movies makes use of production cameras set up and used like security cameras or other recording devices in an attempt to present the films as found footage, but the series has received overall mixed reviews from critics.

That first Paranormal Activity film was something special, however, so if this reboot can recapture that magic...scary times await.

I want to say take away the found footage element, but what are these films without the found footage element.

I love these films as a guilty pleasure so I'm onboard if they tell a different story there are other demons besides Tobi

I'm terrified of horror movies. Like, legit terrified, I'm really easily scared and they tend to stick with me for days or even weeks after I've watched them, so I don't watch them often.

The reason I'm saying that is because I remember back when the first Paranormal Activity came out there was this huge reaction to it; it was being labelled one of the scariest films of all time, everyone was talking about it, I've literally never seen that kind of word of mouth buzz around a movie before or since (except maybe Infinity War and Endgame)

So one of my friends tries to convince me I should go see it with him, and I let my curiosity get the better of me so we went. I sit down, I'm [frick]ing terrified in anticipation of it. It's been out for a while at this point too so the cinema is nearly empty, which just makes the atmosphere feel even more creepy.

I laughed through almost the entire [frick]ing thing. It was such a [frick]ing dumb movie. Literally the only brief moment that it got me was the jump scare right at the end when she jumps at the camera, and even that only lasted a second before I started thinking about the absurdity of the whole thing.

I'm still a certified coward when it comes to horror movies (except the really good ones that kind of prioritise story over pure horror, like The Shining or Psycho) but yeah, Paranormal Activity ain't all that.

Reboot? Do you know how hard it was to capture a ghost on camera those first six time?! How the hell do you so casually expect to capture magic like that again?

I mean, once you've seen one you've kinda seen them all, right? And yet I'll still end watching them anyway.

I've never watched any of these movies. They just didn't interest me.

Narratively interesting, but that clock in the corner was a tension killer.
