TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: Leatherface Is Up To His Old Tricks In Tense First Trailer

Following yesterday's stills, Netflix has debuted the trailer for Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which will see iconic movie maniac Leatherface take up his power tool of choice to dispatch some fresh victims.

The murderous maniac with a penchant for power tools and fashioning masks from his victims' faces is set to return for a direct sequel to '70s horror classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Netflix has now shared the first teaser trailer.

The footage doesn't reveal much, but we do get a glimpse of Leatherface taking up his terrifying weapon of choice after years of attempting to lead a normal life (we're still a little confused by that one) when a fresh batch of potential victims (Sarah Yarkin, Elsie Fisher, Nell Hudson, and Jacob Latimore) begin to make trouble in his town.

According to producer Fede Álvarez, the movie will serve as a follow-up to Tobe Hooper's original, but unlike the recent Halloween revival, it won't necessarily ignore the events of the other TCM entries that followed.

"When I say 'direct sequel' I wouldn't say it skips everything," Álvarez explains. "When movies do that, sometimes it feels a bit disrespectful to all the other films. Some people love Texas Chainsaw 2. I love a lot of things about that movie — it's so wacky and of its time. But the rest is such a mess canon-wise. I think it's up to you to decide when and how the events of the other movies happen."

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is set to premiere on Netflix on February 18. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think.

@dracula - @dracula - I have to disagree. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 was definitely a different flavor. But it really helped to show the flexibility of the franchise. Something the franchise desperately needs, because every attempt to replicate the brilliance of Tobe Hooper's original has crashed and burned. At least the sequel tried to do something interesting by using comedic elements through the lense of exploitation films of the 60s and 70s to emphasize core themes from the first film that were effectively lost on the general public. Not to mention, it helped inspire Rob Zombie's signature style and brought Bill Moseley to the big screen as the infamous "Chop-Top" Sawyer.

@MisterKite -
He's not wrong. The first four films gradually declined:

1. Masterpiece
2. Good
3. Meh
4. Dogshit

@HeavyMetal4Life - Unless it takes place in the movies. Vehicles don't have this problem in the second Jurassic World and the Netflix one with Gal, Ryan and Dwayne.

There is so much wrong with this quote its not even funny💁

He says its disrespectful to skip over past films and in the very next breath says the rest of the films are a mess canon wise🙁

He then says its up to the audience to decide when these events happen? No, its up to the story teller to do that😠

The creators just didnt have the balls to make a straight up reboot or continuation.

Red flags everywhere!

I prefer modern horror. But the best slasher horror is the Halloween series IMO.

Probably followed by Jason and then Chucky for characters, or vice versa if we're talking about the stronger franchises.

@HeavyMetal4Life - fair fair. Some of the unexplained supernatural stuff in Friday the 13th isn’t my cup of tea. Same goes for Nightmare on elm.

But Chucky is def a fun somewhat-modern slasher. Recently watched the first episode of the new series. Pretty satisfied and gonna continue it soon

@JFerguson - if you liked the first episode of Chucky, then you're in for a real treat, its a really good first season and it just gets better and better with each episode.

My stepfather used to play with my brother and I when we were wee young, and would pretend our hands were chainsaws, and my brother and I would cut off all his limbs and of course finally kill him by chainsawing his nuts. He would fake scream and we would all die laughing, with my mother smiling and shaking her head off to the side. Thank you Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the fun memories.

Every time I see this Chainsaw title, I think of real life families of those that lost loved one that the original film was loosely based on. I keep thinking that they are getting reminded of these murders every few years.

I think the problem with this franchise is they have tried so hard to make Leatherface exist in a modern world where the world around him evolved but somehow he didn't nor did he age nor did he get caught by police. The writers time jump and try these new ideas like distant relatives and what not and the movies are pure garbage. I don't understand why they can't make Texas Chainsaw Massacre a period piece and leave it existing in the 1970s into the 1980s. Leatherface doesn't need to be Jason or Pinhead. Those villains have their own lore.

noahthegrand - 12/5/2021, 5:51 PM
@SonOfAGif - I think the thing a lot of the sequels miss is that the Sawyer family is left behind by time. It’s a family of boys with no possibility of future generations. Work dried up and they were replaced by machines, the landscape around them is unforgivingly hot, desolate and overgrown with weeds and the occasional abandoned building. The first sequel gets this, putting them in an abandoned theme park dedicated to Texas’s past accomplishments. Putting them in a modern town or a functioning carnival as one sequel did just wouldn’t work.
