The Werewolf By Night trailer that debuted during the D23 Expo surprised us all with a couple of bloody/gruesome shots, and by all accounts, the the upcoming Halloween Special is indeed the goriest Marvel Studios project yet.
Previous MCU movies/shows have included some pretty violent scenes (Scarlet Witch's murderous rampage in the recent Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, for example), but this Disney+ Special Presentation marks the studio's first full-on foray into the horror genre, and director Michael Giacchino was actually expecting a TV-MA rating.
Making the special black-and-white obviously pays homage to the classic monster movies that inspired it, but it sounds like there may also have been a more practical reason for the decision.
“We had always assumed it would be TV-MA, but I wasn’t always involved with what was happening on that end in terms of ratings and all of that,” Giacchnio tells The Hollywood Reporter when asked how Werewolf By Night managed to secure a TV-14 rating. “But I am sure you are absolutely right that the black and white did help keep us within a certain range.”
A new trailer for Werewolf By Night should be released fairly soon. For now, you can check out the previous teaser below.
Though very little has been officially revealed about this Special, based on what we see here, there's a very good chance the extensive plot leak that did the rounds earlier this year was accurate. We do know that the episode will run for 53 minutes and focus on Jack Russell (Gael Garcia Bernal), who, along with other monster hunters, arrives at Bloodstone Temple in order to compete for the estate’s most sought-after relic.
Werewolf By Night will premiere on Disney+ just in time for Halloween on October 7.
