Reported in hipster outlets and the trades, rumors at Sundance have been circulating about the fate of God Particle (Cloverfield Station?), the third installment in J.J. Abrams' Twilight Zone-esque franchise. It is said that Netflix is in deep talks to acquire the film for the streaming service, which would most likely result in a wide theatrical release being pulled from the cards. With the viral marketing already in full swing, it is possible that a new potential release date might mess with fervent fans already participating in it.
With a release date pegged for April 20th, talks have included pushing the release date back to February. Triggering the talks with Netflix was Paramount citing the film unfit for the cinematic experience. However, this is no reason to worry, from a blockbuster financial standpoint it would be harder to break even with theaters in play, opposed to Netflix. If this were to come through, Cloverfield Station would share the same Netflix fate as Alex Garland's Annihilation, which was pegged too intelligent for audiences. Worst case scenario, the Cloverfield franchise will probably halt development due to the new distribution approach. Best case scenario, a success on Netflix could encourage more unique properties to debut on the service, in addition to new Cloverfield installments, following the success of Bright.
Either way, J.J. Abrams will be too caught up in directing another Star Wars film, which was reported to be all he had in mind during God Particle reshoots.
