Although we may never know why the upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel, titled Leatherface after its namesake killer, has sat on a shelf at the studio for as long as it did (despite having been long since completed), what matters now is that the release date is nearly upon us. Following the continuity established by The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) and Lionsgate's Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013), the film is an origin story focusing on three psychotic teenagers that escape a mental institution with a deranged Texas Ranger trailing them for revenge. One of these teens is destined to become the chainsaw-wielding killer, after enduring horrors that will virtually destroy his mind.

The film is directed by the French duo Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, known for their 2007 directorial debut Inside, a home invasion flick that put them on the map. Blood-soaked and packed full of their trademark style, the red band trailer paints Leatherface as one of the more unique entries in the series' decades-long history. It should be noted that there was an origin film back in 2006 called The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. However, it was a prelude to the 2003 remake of the franchise, of which the upcoming film has no connection.

The film will debut exclusively on the DirecTV television service on 21 September 2017, before receiving a full VOD release and limited theatrical run on 20 October 2017.

I really wish they give this a series a break. It can be so good, but it just gets so lazy and cliche. The one with Jessica Biel is a guilty pleasure horror movie for me, but it was not good in any way lol.

from this trailer, it actually looks like it has a chance to be solid. Will definitely give it a shot with low expectations hoping to be surprised.

@Menks123 -
To be fair, this film looks very different from all the other films, even if it is another prequel (albeit this connects to the original, while The Beginning connected to the 2003 remake).

Also, there is only one remake. The 2013 movie was another sequel to the original, that erased the other sequels from continuity. Right now, the canon timeline is (in chronological order):
-Leatherface (2017)
-The original (1974)
-Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013)

@Darkknight2149 - Ugh 2013 film was so bad :/ But thanks for the clarification!

This does look promising from the trailer, so I am hopeful. Always love a good horror movie and haven't seen many recently besides Insidious and Conjuring 1 & 2. Even though they're a different kind of horror.

Inside was one of those intensely brutal and gory French Horror flicks 10 years ago. The last 2 reboots and prequel were terrible so the bar is set very low.

@Ha1frican -
The only reboot was from 2003. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006) was in the same universe as the 2003 remake. Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013) was a sequel to the original (that erased the previous three sequels from continuity). The upcoming Leatherface is a prequel to the original.

The timeline is very confusing, but here is the current canon (in order of events):
1. Leatherface (2017)
2. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
3. Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013)

@Ha1frican -
There was. The Beginning (2006) was the prequel to the 2003 remake. This is the prequel to the original film from 1974.
