IRON MAN 2: Rourke and Rockwell Named as Villains!

Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell are in talks to star as the villains in "Iron Man 2," being directed by Jon Favreau. Click on in to find out what villains they will play...

This from THR...

Marvel has been keeping a very tight lid on the script for the sequel, being written by Justin Theroux, but it is known that Rourke would play a tattooed Russian heavy named Ivan who becomes Whiplash, a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coils.

NOTE: Several other sources are saying that it is in fact The Crimson Dynamo that Rourke will be playing, which would make more sense--especially because insiders have said that the villain would be Iron Man's Russian counter-part.

Rockwell would play Justin Hammer, a multibillionaire businessman and a rival of industrialist Anthony Stark, AKA Iron Man, being played by a returning Robert Downey Jr.

Rourke and Rockwell would be joining a cast that also includes the returning Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle, who is replacing Terrence Howard, making for one eclectically cast summer blockbuster.

Another part -- one for Stark's assistant Natasha -- is still open.

The project is eyeing a spring start in Manhattan Beach. Paramount will release the movie May 7, 2010.

Rourke, repped by ICM, is making the best of the accolades he is receiving for his heart-wrenching turn in "The Wrestler." On top of this big-budget movie, the actor, who will next be seen in "The Informers," just joined the cast of "The Expendables," an action movie starring Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Jason Statham and Dolph Lundgren.

If Rockwell's deal makes, it would mark a rare studio appearance for the actor, who is best known for his indie dramas. Gersh-repped Rockwell recently starred as a sex-addicted con man in "Choke" and an estranged husband in "Snow Angels." He can currently be seen in the political drama "Frost/Nixon."

I think a better replacement of Terrence Howard rather than Don Cheadle would be Cuba Gooding Jr., who sort of looks like Terrence Howard and who has a better physique to play a military man. But we'll see what Don can do.

Sad story... But it does beg the question "What or who does Justin Hammer hire Whiplash to take care of?"
adamant877
adamant877 - 1/7/2009, 7:28 PM
(The obvious answer would of course be Iron Man, but if you read Whiplash's back story, he was initially hired to take out someone else who was using Hammer's technology.) Are we possibly getting a hint into a THIRD villain for the sequal?!

Another report I saw speculated that Rourke would be playing Crimson Dynamo, not Whiplash. Interesting.

Am I the only one who's got a problem with this lineup? I don't have a beef with the actors (per se), but I was pumped to see the Mandarin be the next heavy in new movie - what ever happened to him? He's only one of the BIGGEST Iron Man villians.

This article is more speculation than it leads you to believe. I have also heard that Rourke is supposed to be the Crimson Dynamo, as well as a loose rumor that Black Widow may be in it too. Personally, Sam Rockwell is a great actor. I wonder why he's been missing so long. We all know Rourke is the man's badass. I do hope it isn't Whiplash, because he is a B-rate villain, I haven't even heard that name in years. But if it is, I'll go see it anyway because I trust John Favreau's judgement. This is the best news all week.

I think Mandarin should be saved for Ironman 3. He is basically Stark's arch nemesis. I think it would be best for them to insert Crimson Dynamo and Black Widow.

Justin Hammer was part of the Armor Wars story too if I'm not mistaken.

Just realised ive never actually seen Mickey Rouke's face, man he's ugly, if i were him id walk around in the "MARV" makeup from sin city.

I'd feel much better if it was Crimson Dynamo, not whiplash to be honest. IDK how they could make whiplash cool and keep it in the realm of reality

Mickey Rourke was more than just Marv from Sin City (Angel Heart, Barfly, Diner) and in The Wrestler hes astounding. Id watch him in anything, even if hes not that pretty to look at

Don't forget that the people that captured Tony Stark in the beginning of the movie were part of an organization known as "The Ten Rings". I'll bet that no matter who the villain is in Iron Man 2, we'll find out that the Mandarin has been in the background pulling strings since the first movie and that he'll play a prominent role in either Iron Man 2, 3 or The Avengers movie.

I think if they want the movie to be as big they need characters that are more well known. But will love to see what they do next

Zaphod BeebleBrox as Justin Hammer? Yess!!! After seeing him as Marv, i'm sold. That was a great perfommance. BUt if he's got whips i think the writers should make Ivan gay. Seriously, that would create some great on screen tension! Ooooh i hate it and love it! those tentacle/whips would be damn scary.

Mickey Rourke is a legend. I've been sold on him since I was a kid, nice drops Rorschach(also see Spun, Get Carter, Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man). Did you know that Sam Rockwell's first on screen appearance is in the first live action Ninja Turtles as one of the Foot Clan.

Perhap's Tony Assisstant in the next movie will be the black widow.

"Another part -- one for Stark's assistant Natasha -- is still open."

It could just be a coincidence but you never know.

NATASHA SHOULD BE MILLA JOVONOVICH, SHE WOULD BE PERFECT. I LIKE THAT THEY ARENT GOING INTO A FANTASTICAL TYPE STORY AND ARE STILL BASING IT IN SEMI REAL SITUATIONS, BUISNES CONGLOMERATES AND HIGH TECH BODY ARMOR.THOUGH I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE MORE FORMIDABLE ARMORED VILLAINS, YOU KNOW, MAKE IT HARD FOR TONY TO TACKLE ALONE THEREBY GIVING HIM A REASON TO MAKE A SUIT FOR RHODEY.JUST WHIPLASH? TONY WOULD TAKE HIM OUT WITH ONE REPULSOR RAY EASY.

Rourke as a Russian Heavy=Crimson Dynamo. Blacklash was an American.
This is all probably speculation anyway...
I agree that Stark having an assistant named Natasha seems to leave the door open to the Black Widow making an appearance.

My speculation(for what it's worth)..
Crimson Dynamo and Black Widow team up in a Russian conspiracy to steal Iron Man's technology. Of course the Widow eventually comes over to the side of Chevy, Apple Pie, and The American Way. With the whole thing being overseen by the Mandarin(who is just seen in the shadows)...Justin Hammer just THINKS he's in charge...

I do think the casting choices are really good...as long as ol' Mickey plays the Dynamo instead of Blacklash

Hey Myth, i just watched the first Turtle movie not too long ago and i saw Rockwell in it as a little tough guy. Man did he ever come a long way from that performance to his Galaxy Quest part as "Guy" the expendable crewman #6 who nobody knows his last name, man did that guy make me laugh LMFAO!!!
TheMyth
TheMyth - 1/8/2009, 9:52 AM
How did I miss that part about Tony's assistant Natasha. Trust me that this has to be Black Widow, especially if she was assigned to him by SHIELD. WOOT! This is cruel if they are baiting us.

Shaman: lol, I haven't seen that movie in years. Gonna have to pull it out and watch.

Classic Rockwell face when the guy asks him "Do you guys have any cigarets?" and he answers popping up two cartons saying "regular or menthol?" LOL.

EURRHH!!! Man is that a bad picture of Rourke on the "featured article" pick! Looks like Michael Myers' mask put on by Leatherface!

Mickey , gawd love ya man.. But your to distracting... Just like when you go see Tom Cruise in a movie, you spend 90 percent of your time saying HEY THERES TOM CRUISE IN A MOVIE... great actors dont have this effect on people

Mickey may be a bit beat up these days, but he's a good actor. Just watch Angel Heart! As for Whiplash...what would be the point of that character. Crimson Dynamo seems more likely.

Rockwell is a highly under-rated actor! He'll be great at whatever role they give him!
schuellerdg
schuellerdg - 1/8/2009, 7:48 PM
I agree that there is no point in having whiplash in there. Crimson Dynamo is a lot better choice.
adamant877
adamant877 - 1/8/2009, 10:51 PM
Every other news source is stating that Rourke will be playing the Crimson Dynamo, and with my own personal knowledge of the characters, I'm inclined to follow that line of thinking.
Not to say that I would mind seeing a "B List" character like "Whiplash", or maybe even a couple!
Keep the Mandarin back as long as you want, I'm a patient man, I'll wait... Just make sure to keep making the movies top-notch, and entertaining, and I'm there!
TheMyth
TheMyth - 1/9/2009, 12:16 AM
I agree with those of you behind Sam Rockwell. I find him to be an incredible and ammusing actor. He ecen made Charlie's Angels(blahch!) interesting during his face time. And like RDJ, he is familiar with quit wit and banter. I can't wait to see the onscreen dynamic between the two, as well as special features on the DVD.
Have any of you seen Tropic Thunder, that movie is hilarious, and RDJ makes it that way. Watch it with the commentary on, it's RDJ, Ben stiller, and Jack Black, funny shit. Off subject, I know, but if every DVD special features could be as entertaining as that movie... wow.
The thought of Rockwell and Downey having moments like that is just great.
