8 "Controversial" Comic Book Movie Moments You Won't Believe Fans STILL Complain About

As fans, we all love to complain when a big screen adaptation fails to do our favourite comic book characters or moments justice. Unfortunately, there are some silly things some just won't shut up about...

As comic book fans, we all love a good moan. After all, even the best superhero movies frequently make decisions we don't like, whether that's the way a certain character is portrayed or how beloved storylines are adapted without the source material really being kept in mind as much as it should be. However, there are some things which it's hard to believe a lot of fans are STILL taking issue with.

Whether or not there's any validity to these complaints is obviously debatable, but the fact that they're still being discussed often years on is unbelievable, especially as there's nothing all that "controversial" about any of these. Or is there? Again, it's subjective, but what you'll find here is a closer look at eight comic book movie moments we can't believe some fans are still having a good whine about...

8. The Mandarin Is Really Called Trevor

While it was clear from the first trailer that Iron Man 3's Mandarin was closer to Osama Bin Laden than his magic ring wielding comic book counterpart, fans were still anxious to see the Armoured Avenger come face to face with his greatest villain in this movie. Well, he did, but it turns out that the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Mandarin was in reality a drunk, drug addled English actor called Trevor. It was a very funny and clever turn of events, but one the vast majority of fans didn't appreciate.

Perhaps realising that they had upset a lot of people, Marvel would later reveal that there is in fact a real Mandarin out there in the "All Hail The King" One-Shot short movie. However, that was seemingly too little too late for some as many still unfairly call Iron Man 3 the worst Marvel movie ever based on this one creative decision. Of course, the fact that there's no Iron Man 4 in sight to bring THE Mandarin to the big screen doesn't exactly help matters!

7. Thor Ditches His Helmet

Chris Hemsworth's God of Thunder briefly wore his helmet in the first Thor movie, but it didn't exactly stick around for very long. A reason for that has never been revealed, and while it could be argued that it's down to it being impractical when the hero heads into battle, that hasn't stopped Loki from sporting his iconic headgear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

This may seem like a silly thing to complain about (and it kind of is), but it's rare to see Thor without his helmet in the comic books, hence why many now can't understand why he doesn't have it in the movies. At this stage though, fans probably need to accept that it's never coming back. There was no sign of the Odinson's helmet in The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, or Avengers: Age of Ultron, while concept art shown off for Thor: Ragnarok at this year's Comic-Con also made no mention of it. I guess this Thor just wants to avoid helmet hair...

6. The Destruction Of Metropolis

Will people ever stop whinging about Man of Steel's final act? Zack Snyder even addressed it head on in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but that didn't stop a new wave of think pieces and editorials hitting the web a few months back about this particular take on Superman. Thousands of people may have died when the hero went head to head with General Zod in Metropolis, but many seem to forget that had Superman not done everything in his power to stop the villain, every single person on Earth would have been wiped out in order for a New Krypton to be created.

Could Zack Snyder have handled this whole thing a little better? Sure, but the fact that it's still such a major talking point is laughable at this point as it's something which has now been discussed to death. Of course, the same applied to Superman's decision to kill Zod upon realising he'd never stop, but it's probably best not to get into that as it too seems to be something many just don't really understand was a necessary and heartbreaking move on Superman's part.

5. The Dance Off

Guardians of the Galaxy may very well be one of the best superhero movies ever released. When it was first announced, no one expected it to actually work, and the vast majority of fans and pundits seemed to delight in predicting that it would be Marvel's first major flop. The opposite was obviously true, and James Gunn ended up both doing these characters justice and opening up a whole new side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, despite how widely loved the movie is, there's one scene in particular which a lot of fans seem to have taken a real issue with. That is the dance off between Star-Lord and Ronan. Despite the fact that it's made clear the hero is just distracting the villain, there are those who just can't see the funny side of this scene, believing that an epic battle should have taken its place. The final act still has one of those of course, but that apparently still wasn't enough for some.

4. How Bruce Wayne Got Back To Gotham City

For the most part, everyone seems to agree that Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy was excellent. Yes, there are certain silly things people moan about (the voice Christian Bale used while in the Batsuit for example or the occasional lack of faithfulness to the source material due to the grounded tone), but the sheer quality of the movies means that none of those things are a major issue for the majority.

However, there's one "plot hole" which seemingly still riles up some fans to the point where they dismiss The Dark Knight Rises as being a bad movie! That is of course the unrevealed story behind how the peniless and broken Bruce Wayne managed to get back to Gotham City - extremely quickly - after being left in a prison in the middle of nowhere. While there's no denying that Nolan should have probably made a greater effort to address this, it really isn't that big of a deal, especially when you consider how many resources and contacts Bruce must have made during his years travelling the globe. It certainly doesn't ruin the film anyway!

3. No Giant Squid In Watchmen

Say what you will about Zack Snyder's work in the DC Films Universe, but it's hard to imagine his slavish adaptation of Watchmen ever being topped. The filmmaker quite literally brought the iconic Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons comic book to life on the big screen, but despite it being massively faithful, one major alteration was made which some fans still haven't been able to forgive him for. That is of course the decision to replace the giant alien squid which attacks New York City with a bomb which causes the same sort of destruction and actually achieves what Dr. Manhattan and Ozymandias wanted in far more believable way.

While Watchmen isn't exactly grounded, it does feel like it takes place in a world not too far removed from our own, so the sight of a massive squid suddenly appearing in Times Square would have been beyond ridiculous. Still, that hasn't stopped some from condemning Snyder for deciding to make one change to this story despite doing everything within his power to otherwise make fans of the comic happy!

2. Wolverine Is Too Short (And Doesn't Have A Costume)

Hugh Jackman has been playing Wolverine for sixteen years now, but that still isn't enough time for a lot of fans to get over the fact that the Australian actor isn't as short as his comic book counterpart. Logan's height is far from a defining characteristic, but it's something many have still become obsessed with, hence why even the best performance from Jackman in the role is often overshadowed by cries about him being too tall to play a character who it's impossible to imagine being as intimidating if he was being played by a tiny actor who isn't the least bit physically imposing.

Another common complaint (and this is one I can actually understand) is the lack of a costume for the hero. The fact that we've never got to see Wolverine in his comic book suit is pretty infuriating - especially after it was teased in The Wolverine - but at this stage, it's something we all just need to learn to live with!

1. Doomsday Looks Like A Cave Troll

Does Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's Doomsday look awful? In a word, yes. Why a bona fide comic book fan like Zack Snyder wouldn't bring a more faithful version of the iconic villain to the big screen is hard to say, and while his appearance definitely improves as the battle against the Trinity rages on, there's still an awful lot of room for improvement. However, the fact that many fans are still complaining about Doomsday's look is as frustrating as the tedious jokes about "Martha!"

We've seen a lot of dodgy looking CGI characters brought to the big screen over the years, and this Cave Troll lookalike is definitely one of them, but his appearance overshadowing the powerful moment where Superman sacrifices his life to stop him is a real shame. Batman v Superman is likely to forever remain a very divisive movie, but becoming attached to this particular point just seems pointless.
