Badass Digest talked to Feige at CinemaCon about something I've been thinking about for quite some time. Robert Downey Jr. (47) is not going to play Iron Man forever. The question is, how much longer? With the MCU set up for all intents and purposes as a cinematic comic book universe, the stories will just continue on unless there's a New 52 wholesale reboot. Unlike their comic book counterparts, the actors that suit up in superhero movies age [some very badly]. And while most of the Marvel heroes are young, RDJ is no spring chicken and will likely be the first actor [RDJ or Samuel L. Jackson] who will say goodbye to his franchise. Here's what Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said when he was presented with this very scenario.
FEIGE: "I think Bond is a good example. Let’s put it this way: I hope Downey makes a lot of movies for us as Stark. If and when he doesn’t, and I’m still here making these movies, we don’t take him to Afghanistan and have him wounded again. I think we James Bond it."
RDJ can next be seen in The Avengers, opening May 4th in the United States.
The Avengers is an upcoming American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is the sixth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Development of The Avengers began when Marvel Studios received a grant from Merrill Lynch in April 2005. After the success of the film Iron Man in May 2008, Marvel announced that The Avengers would be released in July 2011. With the signing of Scarlett Johansson in March 2009, the film was pushed back for a 2012 release. Whedon was brought on board in April 2010 and rewrote the screenplay that was originally written by Zak Penn. Production began in April 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before moving to Cleveland, Ohio in August 2011 and New York City in September 2011. The film was converted to 3D in post-production.
The Avengers is scheduled for release on May 4, 2012 in the United States in 2D and 3D.
