Mel Gibson Would Take Robert Downey Jr. Up On His IRON MAN 4 Directing Offer

You might remember earlier in the year when Downey Jr. was quoted as stating he'd only star in a fourth Iron Man film if his pal Mel Gibson directed it? Well it turns out Mel is game. Find out what he had to say in a video interview with Extra after the jump.

Iconic role: Robert Downey Jr in character as Iron Man in the third film

Robert Downey Jr. may not have been entirely serious when he threw Mel Gibson's name in the ring to direct a fourth Iron Man movie (he later said he had simply made an "offhanded remark to a journalist and friend"), but the troubled Aussie actor/director is more than willing to get behind the camera for it. Extra's Mario Lopez asked Gibson about it at The Mending Kids International Gala in Santa Monica on Saturday.

Gibson when asked if he'd consider the gig: "Of course you know. I'm pretty good at directing…I think I got some statues for it…I think I can do it. I think I'm a better director than actor. I hope somebody gives me an argument on that!" Obviously this is unlikely to happen -- even if Marvel were to move forward with a fourth Iron Man movie -- but it's fun to think about...or is it? Do you think Gibson would be a good fit? Say what you will about the man (and believe me I've probably said it all), but there's no denying his skills as a director.

Do it Mel. He's a proven director. I personally don't care about his views as long as he keeps them to himself.

I'd love it. Mel hasn't been as bad as everyone wants him to be. He got shitfaced and said some crap.

Roman Polanski is on the actual run due to rape charges, but he's loved by Hollywood. Just because Mel said some crap about jews he's universally hated? c'mon.

There once was a director named Mel
Who damned all of Jewdom to Hell
For he thought it not groovy
That they blasted his movie
And sent Jesus to his death knell.

@Tuuralihn

He just didn't say inflammatory things about the Jewish people. He's said some very hateful things directed at Women, Hispanics, Blacks, and Gays documented and released for the public to read and hear. The record is clear that he is a bigoted man dealing with serious anger issues in his life.

But with that said, the man never committed a crime or been accused of anything more in a court of law than being an outright asshole. And I believe assholes have a right to work because doing a job isn't about liking a person, its about getting things done to complete goals. Mel Gibson is a talented filmmaker and actor and has a right to work in an industry that gives child molesters, rapists, and outright degenerate scum regular work.

But that's my 2 cents...

Apocalyptic and Passion of the Christ was gritty or dark? Eh. I guess. I think we need to clarify what we mean by those terms. You can stretch them out to include any R-rated movie with lots of violence then.
