Mickey Rourke Criticizes Marvel Studios For "Breaking Jon Favreau's Balls" And More!

Talking at a junket for Immortals earlier today, Mickey Rourke (who played Whiplash in 2010's Iron Man 2) has let rip at Marvel Studios for how they edited his performance and treated director Jon Favreau...

Superhero Hype caught up with Mickey Rourke earlier today, and while discussing his villainous role in Immortals, he had a few things to say about his time working with Jon Favreau and Marvel Studios on Iron Man 2. Now, I definitely remember reports of the actor heading on over to Russian prisons to research the role and there being some talk in the past of not all of his material making the final cut, but it would appear that it was a lot more than we ever realized!

"I try to find the moments where [the villian is] not that cliched, evil bad guy and it's a big fight. I had it on 'Iron Man' and they won. It was going to work for Marvel and them breaking [Jon] Favreau's balls and wanting just a one-dimensional villain. The performance and all the things that I tried to bring to it end up on the f--ing floor. That can cause you not to care as much. To not to want to put that effort in to try and make it an intelligent bad guy or a bad guy who is justified in what his reasons are."

This isn't the first time Marvel Studios have fallen out with an actor in one of their productions. Ed Norton disagreed with the way they handled The Incredible Hulk and his role as Bruce Banner was later given to Mark Ruffalo for 2012's The Avengers. Terrence Howard was replaced by Don Cheadle because he wanted more money. While we don't know the full details behind any of these fall outs, I guess we can add Mickey Rourke to the list of actors who won't be working with the studio again in future! How do you guys feel about his comments? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place.

It's common knowledge that Marvel Studios turned a potentially amazing film into a just above average one. I didn't know that they messed with Vanko, though. I thought that they only messed with the story on a more massive scale in order to turn it into a sort of the prologue for "The Avengers". I love Rourke and wish that they'd have let him make the character his own. He could have made Vanko into the best bloody villain in the history of CBMs. Apparently he wasn't given that chance, though. *sigh*

Aside from the money, Howard had some other problem that would come out that would make Marvel not want their movies associated with him.

On Norton, as good a job as he did as Banner, he was not a good promoter of the movie. We have seen some great promoters of these movies in Clark Gregg and Tom Hiddleston, particularly. A guy like Norton needs to learn to promote the movies he does. A lot of people beside him are depending on their success and it isn't fair to have the top guy not push the movie.

The Rourke thing sounds like a legitimate grip given the scenes that have been cut from both Thor and Captain America that would have been good in the movie but seem to have been cut simply because they don't want to give us a movie that runs into 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

Heard he studied a bit of Russian for the film. I think Marvel is focusing too much on The Avengers. Whiplash could've been a better villian, not regarding his Monger suit at the end, even Mickey was into it....

Iron Man 2 was by far the worst movie Marvel has put out. I got the feeling when watching it that the studio had way too much input. They wasted a very talented cast. I just get the feeling that Marvel is too concerned with selling accessories then putting out quality films.

Don't get me wrong I loved Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk. However, once those became successful the movies became more cliche and rather cookie cutter. They weren't terrible (well besides Iron Man 2), but they weren't anything special. I have high hopes for The Avengers, mainly because I think Joss Whedon can knock it out of the park. But I hope in the future that the Marvel execs don't have too much input creatively, and trust that the directors know what they are doing.

watch the special features for both Iron Man films and you'll see why the first one was such a great movie where Favreau is having fun and being relatively left alone to do his own thing. Then you get Iron Man 2 which Marvel tried to force-feed the Avengers crap down the movie itself which made it one dimensional. Nice going Marvel in burning more bridges.

of course he blames marvel, how does he know hes a one dimensional villian if he hasnt even seen the [frick]ing movie?

Sam Rockwell was terrific in that movie. I was just very disappointed with Iron Man 2. The cast was terrific, the director was good, and all the buzz surrounding it was great.

Then I saw the movie and realized it was a 2 hour preview for The Avengers. I also didn't like how Favreau had to throw himself into the movie, but he wasn't the worst thing about that movie.

Marvel movies are too concerned about appealing to the masses, and selling accessories (toys videogames etc.) that they seem to be holding back when it comes to story telling. Instead of making it a little bit more adult they play if safe. Which is fine, and I understand why they do it. But I would like to see a little them push the envelope a little bit more at the house of idea's.

I can understand why Marvel doesn't want the creative team to have too much creative control. They will lose money and get a bad rep if the movie doesn't do too good. I think because of this The Avengers movie won't be good in my personal opinion.

At the same time they need to let the creative do what they need to do best or else it will keep hurting there bottom line.

on the other hand, one thing Marvel movies have on DC's is, they are more faithful to the comics. Give creative too much liberty and you end up with Snyderman: Man of Abs

Rouke despite being a talented actor would not be able to make a character this simplistic into someone amazing, he was out for revenge against the Stark Family for not getting the same legacy for the Russians. They combined two character concepts that to me didn't mesh. If they made him a prideful Russian, an ex KGB agent or Spetznaz solider out to prove himself and becomes the Crimson Dynamo to combat Tony for supremacy over Technology would have been a better idea.

The problem with Norton was also he wants WAY too much control over film making besides acting, he wants to be part of the writing, directing, and some times editing of a movie. He never cares for promotion simply thinking that the film alone will bring in seats

With Howard the problem was he was cast first in the first movie and had a bigger pay than the others, when #2 came around they wanted to give him less because of RDJ, he didn't like that so they gave him the boot.

Marvel Studios has a plan in all this, they want to create a huge massive interconnect continuity based universe, some things in certain movies sadly had to be altered to rush their decisions into production, why Ant-man seems to take forever is beyond me, Just make it already and have it connect somehow to the Avengers.

@jaewest215

I agree 100% with you man. Although, I really hope Marvel has listened to the feedback concerning Cap, Iron Man 2, Thor (which I actually thought was fun, but could have been Great without studio meddling).

I hope that they take the same chances they did with Iron Man 1 and The Incredible Hulk, and put their faith in Whedon. The guy has written some fantastic comics and really knows his shit. I have a feeling that if the studios just let him be and trust him, he can produce a truly epic film.

Do I think that will happen? Probably not so much. Too much is riding on The Avengers and too much money is at stake, so while I think The Avengers will be great, I get the feeling that the general consensus will be that something was holding it back from being truly great.

IM2 was INCREDIBLY LAME.

I THINK Kevin Feige understands what they did wrong and will improve upon them POST-Avengers.

LOL! to those who were okay with IM2's sole purpose being a "bridge" for the MCU.

Cap and Thor had subtle easter eggs and Avengers hype, IM2 was just in your face.

Here's to a bright future for CBMs and Marvel Studios!

Mickey Rourke should criticize his plastic surgeon for the crappy job they did on his face. He should have played Jigsaw in Punisher with his road rash face of his. And besides Megan Fox, he has the weirdest fingernails in Hollywood. I found it distracting and took away from his overall performance. I never bought his sausage fingers as being able to use a keyboard properly in order to reprogram the drones. Totally Unbelievable. Forget about acting; it's all about believable typing.

I love the fact Marvel Studios is so into the depiction of their characters, but at the same time you have to listen to the actors and directors, and give them creative space to create.Iron Man 2 was rushed we all know that,if it wouldve been more thoroughly thought it,it wouldve been an even more awesome movie....but at the end of the day that movie lead to the epic tales such as Thor and The First Avenger, so you know its the growing pains of the studio at the end of the day.But i understand his point completely, im sure he can play another character in the future if so he wishes too
