Spotted inside the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly by @Armageddon26, of Twitter & CBM, a new still photo from Marvel's anticipated Iron Man 3 movie has surfaced. Featuring a low-resolution shot of Sir Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin, also featured in the magazine is a detail regarding the villain's ten rings. While Marvel's president confirmed that the alien subplot for The Mandarin's Ten Rings has been dropped, EW says the rings “will still be the source of his power.”

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce & Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968. “Iron Man 3” is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures & DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing & Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee & Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film hits May 3, 2013, & is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

i'm guessing the Dragon carving behind Ben Kingsley is the nod to the dragon aliens and fing fang foom.

Not that I mind, im sure Marvel has tweaked it enough to make it make sense within the MCU like they did with Thor and that's all that matters to me.

His name is "The Mandarin" He's of asian descent. "The Mandarin is a Rascist Caricature," Uh.... You THINK?! If a [frick]ing villain's name is Taco, he's gonna be a [frick]ing Mexican, alright?! Who cares if he's a stereotype? That's what he is, so leave it be. I'm sure 70 year old Kingsley will do great, but tell me Ken Wantanabe or Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa wouldn't have [frick]ed major shit up? And as far as the No Alien tech thing goes, that's cool, whatever, they just better have a decent story behind the rings.

Don't disappoint me Black, you haven't so far...

Don't know where i read it (Here maybe) that Ben Kingsley got a standing ovation on set from the Cast and Crew, lead by Downey Jr. Plus his roles in Sexy Beast, Schindler's List etc, i have confidence that he will own this role.

"Kingsley is of Asian descent, just not Chinese descent..."

..and so was Mandarin...so there shouldn't be any issue that some like to make there out to be.

I think looks the part pretty well, although... he seems a little old at times. Glad to hear that the rings do give him some power, hopefully we'll get a good back story for him.

The Mandarin is half Brit half asian so Kingsley is perfect for the role except the asian half in the comics is Chinese/Mongol not Indian

@ Ranger 14

The Mandarin father was Chinese and a descendant of Genghis Khan, his mother was English, so Kingsley can kiiiinnnddaa pull it off but not really. His Hairs style alone suggest that he is from Chinese descent. So there can be fan issue that some like to make it out to be.

I like Ben and I look forward to seeing his performance but I wouldn't have cast him in this role. After hearing his voice and seeing his appearance, I would have rather seen a more traditional take with an actor who looks like he is the decent of Genghis Kahn, thats what gives him allot of his back bone! Someone with a voice like The Shadow Khan in the "Shadow". His Look and accent were great.

1/5th of the Worlds population is said to be a Descendent of Ghengis Kahn, so they could of pretty much picked a name out of hat for that casting and been close aha.

Osama, I mean, The Mandarin looks exactly how I thought he would: Ottoman/Mongolian.

@ Niuhll

Not all the population looks to be a descendent, this is CBM, when artist do a piece on a character who is a descendent of Julius Caesar Im sure they're not going to make him look Asian.

@crashtest Well that depends on the migration patterns of all following members of the Ceasar line. In fact one of Ceasar's sons was part Egyptian so. But mine was more of joke about how Kahn couldn't keep it in his pants more than anything else.

You know I'm crazy about speculating, so let me drop a theory about the rings: When strong beams of light pass through (or reflect off of) the rings' mineral — wavelengths are amplified into an extremely powerful laser. Essentially, I think the rings are an arc reactor alternative.

They need a power source for the Coldblood Firepower characters. And I don't think they're going to repeat the replicating Tony's arc reactor story again. So I seriously think the rings are a power source. In the trailer, The Mandarin cocks a gun and his fingers are ringless. So, at one point at least, he takes off the rings. He would place them in a circle (like the Ten Rings insignia) and bam! An arc reactor for his armored army.

I've always imagined that Marvel will take this more grounded route and I'm pretty sure they really have.

Magical or technologic rings, i don't care. I like changes, as long the scripts is good and he delivers in the role, i mean, i hope that Mandarin is not underused as Wiplash was.

@Optimus83 That's an interesting observation you've made. Kingsly does look more middle-eastern than Asian, but now that I think about it, this look might tie the film in with the first one. He looks like the terrorist from Iron Man.

If Raza returns and we get a little Rockwell's Justin Hammer, things may get perrity sweet in the building.

NightForce

Kingsley is gonna own this role, I can just feel it. On the aliens thing, I guess its no big deal, they just better have a good story behind the rings. I mean they could still be alien tech, they don't have to physically show any aliens. It wouldn't be that big a deal after The Avengers.
