Robert Downey Jr. On Starting The MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE

Robert Downey Jr. will grace the cover of the October issue Vanity Fair, in which he reflects on the highs and lows of his career - from his battle with substance abuse to currently presiding atop the Marvel empire. Of interest, is Downey's take on starting the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Iron Man (2008). Said the Tony Stark actor, "I’ve gone from being convinced that I am the sole integer in the approbation of a phenomenon to realizing that I was the lead in the first of a series of movies that created a chain reaction that, if everything didn’t fire the way it was supposed to, there’s no operator, no anything. And you go, O.K., life is doing something here that included me but did not require me. But, yes, that role means a lot. Marvel is kind of like this sacred brotherhood.

I would love an Iron Man 4 film but it's Robert's decision. RDJ is the perfect casting for Tony Stark / Iron Man.

The MCU, it's the Juggernaut b!!!

the second Iron Man film is great, it was like a TV show, it allowed us to spend time with these characters. Not everything must be "huh how exciting"

Justin Hammer was hilarious with his fake friendly behaviour. "I don´t speak..russian". Hope he returns in a future movie.

Doopie: i hope they allow Tony Stark to get old, like in Star Trek.

Having Captain Kirk getting old and fat and still be heroic made him real, we all will get old and fat.

THEN, we´ll have legacy heroes, some protege will take on the armor.

I hope that when he's done, they just recast the roll - NO rebooting is necessary OR EVEN PRACTICAL!
There will be a long history of THAT Tony Stark MCU character meeting and interacting with other Marvel movie characters. His movie origin is probably the best modern-retelling-translation-from-the-comic there is. So no, no rebooting. When the time comes ALL of the MCU characters should just be recast. The franchise will survive. James Bond has done it since 1969.

doopie- they could kill tony replace him with Arno stark (if he exists) then later bring him back with a different actor with the infinity gauntlet/reality gem.

KrazyForKomix - indeed, but after Sean Connery we had the god awful Roger Moore.

I think they should follow the Star Trek route. New actors for new heroes aging in real time.

@Doopie If you want to hear a crazy theory of mine in order to keep Iron Man going what if with out recasting anyone, Howard Stark in an alternate reality is Iron Man and some how he's brought in to the MCU. Just bring in Dominic Cooper.

Or not. Maybe he is just the conductor of the conspiracy train! Choo choo mother[frick]ers!

Sounds like a solid solution.
The GA would likely accept Howard Stark as IM.

Time travel is throughout the Avengers history and needs to be in the MCU.
We are still waiting to see the Time Gem, Kang, or any real timeline
CROSSING.

Who else would you guys be interested in seeing as Tony Stark/Iron Man once Downey steps down from the armor?

@VictorHugo
But Star Trek had the luxury of replacing the whole cast all at one time. They even created a new alternate universe for them to live in Without continuity conflicts!.
Assuming that ALL of the Marvel major actors don't conveniently retire their masks at the same time, what do you do when, say, Chris Hemsworth's Thor meets a rebooted Tony Stark? Thor has had history, adventures and conversations with Tony Stark – BUT NOT the newly rebooted, newly minted Tony Stark standing in front of him played by some as yet undecided actor. How do they react to each other? And the problem only multiplies as each actor retires his role and his (or her) character is rebooted!
Nope, I think it will be easier for Marvel writers AND movie goers to just use the James Bondian template (DESPITE the unavoidable possibility of getting Roger Moore cast as Tony Stark).

If they don't get Joaquin Phoenix to play Doctor Strange, then he could do a couple of movies as Tony. The man can act.

@Doopie

You know about 2 years ago I came up with a pretty humorous/goofy idea of how they could easily recast Downey. It was going to be after the Avengers defeated Thanos and etc and once again the infinity gems would be spread out except this time Stark took the "reality gem" into custody. (Not sure if the reality gem allows your greatest desires to come true or not but if so) Stark comes across an old photo of himself in his younger years (about late 20's/early 30's) and he falls asleep with the gem in one hand. He awakens the next day walks into the bathroom he looks in the mirror and surprisingly sees that he's young again. (Of course introducing a new actor) Lol

hahaha great one, almost choked with my orange juice, hehehe

Well, it´s true, Bruce Banner was replaced twice and nobody cared. I just hope these actors stick around longer.

Like Whiplash said in Iron Man : "Don´t get too attached to things, learn to let go"

Here's something that many of you guys tend to misunderstand and RDJ put it beautifully:

"Created a chain reaction that, if everything didn’t fire the way it was supposed to, there’s no operator, no anything"

And this is largely true to what is occuring and what has occured over at WB. Superman Returns failed for them, JL Mortal was shelved, Green Lantern bombed, and Man of Steel performed just enough to warrant a sequel. Out of both GL and Returns...it basically setback any plans of a JL universe by almost a decade. And Nolan never was going to let his Batman be included since he had so much power over at WB. Hell, Man of Steel was never supposed to be a universe, it was going to be a standalone franchise with another actor playing a different Superman in JL. Now between WB and Marvel, a guy like Fiege is a charm to have because he is a man of vision, understands the characters, and he is a long term planner. One of the best in the business. WB could use someone like that.

Looking at the details and facts...it's hard to blame WB when they have literally failed at almost every attempt. Maybe Zack Snyder and crew can turn things around who knows. Hell imagine if Ironman or Avengers had failed and pulled a Green Lantern? The whole MCU would have not worked and would have not happened just like RDJ is saying here. And I feel like many fans have become too greedy and have taken for granted the MCU because it's something that just doesn't happen at all that often especially in American cinema. It takes planning, proper motivation, direction, and luck to achieve something this big. Hopefully DC can someday replicate something of a similar success, not just a carbon copy (example: multiverse idea).
