Mr Murdock's Jonah Hex Film Pitch

Mr Murdock's Jonah Hex Film Pitch

With almost 7 years passing since Warner Bros. lackluster Jonah Hex, I think now is a great time to revive the western character and take him in a fresh new direction.

Jonah Hex was raised by his alcoholic father who sold him to an Apache tribe in 1851 when he was a teenager. When he saved their chieftain he was welcomed as a full-fledged member of the tribe. However, the chieftains own son Noh-Tante grows jealous of his relationship with White Fawn and betrays Jonah during their manhood rite, forcing Jonah to kill Not-Tante in self-defence. For breaking the rules of combat and murdering his son, the chieftain has Jonah branded with the mark of the demon and exiled from the tribe.

Several years later he joins the Confederate States Army during the Civil War to protect his homeland. He rises to the rank of lieutenant in the Cavalry alongside his close friend Jeb Turnbull. His conscience made it difficult for him to fight against abolitionists, and he eventually decided to surrender to the Union Army at Fort Charlotte. Despite his refusal to give up information on the whereabouts of his men, they were able to track them down by the mud on his shoes. Hex's entire unit was captured, and the General made his men believe that he had given them up. A massacre executed by the higher command, and almost all of his unit perish, his close friend Jeb Turnbull included. Hex manages to escape but goes down in Southern history as a turncoat and a traitor.

It isn’t long after that Jonah becomes a bounty hunter after he murders a criminal outlaw beating Tallulah Black, a prostitute outside of a saloon. In his inebriated state, Jonah believed him to be his own father, Woodson, abusing his mother Janine. The local deputy gave Hex the bounty on the outlaw’s head and insisted that even drunk, Hex’s draw was the fastest draw he'd ever seen. Tallulah takes a liking to Jonah and insists that he teach her how to shoot. Jonah is reluctant at first, but after Talulah tells him about her abusive upbringing Jonah concedes, taking her under his wing.

Jeb’s father Quentin Turnbull catches wind of Jonah Hex’s reemergence and employs infamous outlaw El Papagayo to hunt down and kill the bounty hunter he blames for his son’s death. Hex and Tallulah are pursued by Papagayo and his gang of bandits. After a confrontation in a small town with the gang, Tallulah and Hex emerge victorious. However, during the showdown Tallulah is shot in the face by El Papagayo, causing her to lose her eye. While the town doctor nurses her back to health, Hex returns to Virginia to confront and hopefully make peace with Jeb's father. He tries to explain his innocence to him but Turnbull refuses to hear it and after a physical altercation with the old man, he kills him in self-defence. Branded a criminal himself after killing Quentin, Hex turns himself to plead his case and earn his freedom.

However, jurors can’t see past his involvement in the capture of his army unit. Branded a criminal by his country, Hex is transported to a jail facility. However, whilst Jonah Hex is being escorted, we see a figure on horseback tracking them. Wearing an eyepatch, we see Tallulah Black begin her recon mission.

I can't say I don't like it. Good job. Though I am curious... did you have any crew in mind? Writer(s), director(s), cinematographer(s), etc.?

@TheRealTomServo - James Mangold was the director I had in mind, not so much because of Logan (though it definitely helps to know he has an interest in comic book properties), but my personal favourite film of his 3:10 to Yuma. Quite possibly my favourite Western too. Great, great film.

Love the cast, and if I were to throw a couple of names into the ring:I'd offer Jeff Nichols(who worked with your fabulous Hex pick),David Michod(The Rover comes to mind) and Slow West director John Maclean. Or for bonuses:grab a time machine and go get Sergio Leone,Howard Hawkes, or John Ford(the Grandpapas of the Western genre)

Great work here man. I'm not very familiar with Jonah Hex but I you gave enough with this fancast to give a novice like myself a clear picture/direction. Two thumbs up.
