Speaking at the DREDD panel at the London Film and Comic Con yesterday, screenwriter Alex Garland has offered up some new details on the possibility of a second and third instalment in the franchise, reports Bleeding Cool. He apparently told fans in attendance that DREDD will need to make at least $50 million at the North American box office in order to make a sequel a possibility. While there were plans to introduce Judge Death in the upcoming reboot starring Karl Urban as the title character, the villain (and the Dark Judges) are being saved for the third film. The second will take Judge Dredd to the Cursed Earth. Whether or not all this will become a reality depends entirely on just how well the film is received this September...

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson, a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan's inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound's control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

STARRING:

Karl Urban as Judge Dredd
Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson
Lena Headey as Madeline Madrigal
Domhnall Gleeson as Travis Synders
Langley Kirkwood as Judge Lex
Francis Chouler as Judge Guthrie
Deobia Oparei as Judge T.J. Alvarez

RELEASE DATE: September 7th, 2012 (UK) September 21st, 2012 (US)

50 mil is pretty easy when you think about it. If the movie delivers, then people will go see it. Only HUGE box flops make under 40 mil. when it's an actual tentpole movie like this one is.

@Pux

Are you kidding me? Anyone who bases what movies to see or anything else based on reviews is a complete idiot.

50 million in today's market is not an implausible number. There are enough Dredd fans around to make that mark, even with limited appeal to mainstream audiences. Good marketing will help- just push this thing as a futuristic action film and you'll reach mainstream fans of action and/or scifi that can pad those receipts.
