EDITORIAL: So What's Going To Happen With Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 3?

At one point, everyone knew for a fact that James Gunn would be directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, with it coming out in 2020. Well, that all flipped once Disney found some disturbing tweets.

We all know the story. James Gunn, director of both Guardians of the Galaxy movies, was fired by Disney from some very questionable tweets they dug up. Which in result, stirred up plenty of controversy from the fans. So regardless of your opinion on this decision, Gunn is done from making Marvel movies. Which in another result, made Dave Bautista very unhappy. To the point where he's expressed his anger repeatedly on Twitter, and seemingly wants to leave Disney and Marvel altogether. To sum up this ordeal in one word; yikes.

No one expected so much mayhem in such little time. It's now official that Guardians 3 will be put on a hiatus. In other words, that's not to say the movie is canceled. However, Disney just needs time to get things together before they have a concrete release date again. So, what exactly does the future hold for this beloved but frozen franchise?

First things first, they have to get a new director. Knowing the massive success Marvel has had, I'm sure directors from all over are knocking on their door. Which means picking the right director is even more important. Fans are already angry that James Gunn is gone. So getting a worthy director to replace him will probably be a lengthy process. Personally, there's only one person who could take this franchise and run with it. Not only that, but receive approval from fans without hesitation. And that's Taika Waititi. Known for directing Thor: Ragnarok, he's been praised for his wacky style and unique take on Thor's third installment.

His otherworldly comedy is something that fits Star-Lord and his gang to a tee. There are numerous amounts of great directors out there, but Waititi would be an exceptional choice.

Secondly, where would you even take the Guardians after this? Well, Avengers 4 could tell us where the Guardians will go from here on out, but as of now, we can only theorize. Adam Warlock could be a big player in Volume 3, so there's that.

The team itself may change their roster a bit as well. Does Drax come back after the recent Bautista Bombs happening? It's very possible if Bautista does in fact leave Disney, his Drax may get written off. Whether it's by death or simply just leaving the team to be his own man.

Also, don't be surprised if Thor becomes a new member of the Guardians. It would be huge to see an original Avenger join the outlaws in space. He could be their "big weapon" for big battles. These characters have already met each other, as seen in Avengers: Infinity War. Who wouldn't want to see more of something like this?

Bottom line, don't expect the exact same team for the next movie.

Overall, it's a shame with what's happened with the Guardians franchise in the past weeks. However, that doesn't mean their future isn't bright. Marvel can fix this with the right preparation. Although, in the possibility we don't see the Guardians again after Avengers 4, then I think we can all say it's been a good ride.

They leave the entire team dead and make it a solo Rocket Raccoon movie! 😆

First off good article and a good read. In any case, I do like the idea of Taika but if I had one criticism with Ragnarok is that the emotional stuff was bogged down by the humor. Say what you want about Gunn he nailed emotion. Now if they want to go crazy I say Wes Anderson. Hes never done big budget films but the guy nails comedy and emotional beats....at least to an extent. I recommend people watch Grand Budapest Hotel.

Please no more Taika...Thor 3 was supposed to be the big emotional epic but was pushed aside for a million jokes. He turned Thor into a clown.

@Kevwebsz - I hate Thor 3. It was probably my absolute least favorite MCU film yet. And it was all because of Taika Waititi turning the least comical character in the Marvel Universe into a comedy film.

Having said that, Taika does seem to be a good choice for Guardians for that very reason.

@CorndogBurglar - A clown that defeated Surtur and Hulk. Also, a clown that had the most bad ass scenes with mjolnir since the first Thor film.

A movie with a UNIQUE direction, with great visuals and peculiar action. A movie with a great 80's synth soundtrack.

Taika Waititi, a director that protrayed him as the stronger avenger as he supposed to be. A director that had to take his emblematic hammer away, his long hair, an eye, his father, his whole home in order to make him an INTERESTING CHARACTER that Joss Whedon never cared about.

A movie that set up for the Russo brothers to make him even more interesting, following the events from Ragnarok.

But, HEY, it has way too many jokes, HERESY! You guys are allergic to humor just to sound interesting, the same way you're allergic to Disney and blame it if a Star Wars movie fails. You don't know how yo appreciate a good movie.

1. It makes sense for Drax to just leave the team. When Thanos is defeated in A4 it would be very easy for Drax to say that his entire motivation is now resolved. The killer of his family has been brought to Justice. So now he can go live out the rest of his life in relative peace.

2. Isn't Hemsworth's contract up after A4? I know it's always possible that he can resign, but as of now he is done after A4. So we can't really assume or expect that he will be around to join the Guardians or to have a 4th Thor film. I think we kind of have to consider the future with what we currently know, and that means no more Thor.

3. A new team of Guardians seems to be the best route. Gunn was already talking about how the team would be very different after Guardians 3. I imagine they would keep a couple, like maybe Starlord and Rocket, but I was kind of already expecting an all new team anyway.

Just don't do Volume 3. Gunn was the real leader of the team, and it's already showing how much it has affected them. Professional actors they may be, but the movie would be an awkward viewing, and an awkward release for the studio.

Everyone acts like Guardians vol 2 was good. I think it sucked. I have no problem with the franchise taking on a new director like most sequels do anyway.

1. Delay GotG3
2. Wait until the Fox-Disney merger deal goes through, so Trump doesn't stop it
3. Rehire James Gunn
4. Let Twitter rage die down (could take anywhere from 48 hours to a week)
5. Make movie with original cast
6. Profit

Couldn't agree more. Even if Taika is the most obvious choice and although it wouldn't be surprising at all, doesn't mean Marvel shouldn't hire Taika
