The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Men in Black 3 will indeed take the #1 spot at the North American box office this weekend, after taking an impressive $1.6 million at midnight showings last night. Was this boosted by the promise of a six minute sneak peek of The Amazing Spider-Man? Sony Pictures tells Deadline that they consider this to be, "Good. Expect a big day today, and kids to drive a huge Saturday-Sunday-Monday." Analysts meanwhile are currently predicting a Memorial weekend total of anywhere between $85M - $100M domestic and $200M overseas. Every time I read Men In Black I hear Will Smith's credits song and it makes me want to punt a cat.

I'm down with the cast other than Big Will though.

It will be interesting to see if the people go to this...I probably will. I think a less than 70% rating on RT doesn't bode well, but when you're a franchise movie, maybe it doesn't matter, plus the world sucks and everyone wants to escape from it by going to the movies. It may beat the Avengers... probably will... if it doesn't, you'll never see another MIB with this cast.

Yoss... the Olsen twins? ewwwwwwwwww. I'd rather sit through Green Lantern... twice!

Wait... Didn't the Avengers midnight showings alone bring in $18 million? How exactly does $1.6 million even remotely compare to 18? I see them maybe taking this week due to it being their opening, but they're not going to top the Avengers opening weekend, nor the Avengers total by the time it's out of theaters. You know why? The Avengers was epic. MIB is just ok.

Hell, I want to see Bill Hader doing Andy Warhol. He's a really funny impressionist!

I have not seen it yet, but is it worth watching it? I mean, the first one was great but the second was crap. So...is it just like the first one or the second?

Cosmo@, wow Bill Hader as Andy Warhole? He is such a funny actor but I did not know that he will be in this one :)

Im glad its gonna do well huge fan of the original. Cant wait to see now that the reviews are positive.

Hope it really is good.

i love the avengers, ima see it again today with my family, but it would be a shame if a good MIB movie didnt beat it in its four week!

This article fails to point out that the $1.6 million was made from just over 2000 screens, that's only half of the number of screens it will eventually open to for the weekend.

More importantly, that measly that $1.6 million is still well below expectations so its not actually off to a good start despite predictions of a $85 million weekend.

lmao yoss.

Well it is Memorial Day weekend and school is out

If I decide to watch this I'm gonna buy an Avengers ticket and walk into MIB.

Saw these four movies last night

Battleship - 8 people in the theater (these all count my brother and I)
Dark Shadows - 5 people
The dictator - 7 people
Avengers - 35 people

Me thinks MIB3 has some work to do to beat Avengers. It very well may, but i think it will be about a 65-40 million split between the two.

How many screens did Avengers have to make their 18.7 Mil in midnight showings? I read somewhere that it was on 2500 screens which is only 500 screens less than MIB3. Take away those screens and it would still have made around 15 Mil. And 1.6 Mil on 2000 screens is... a good start? And it's supposed to dethrone Avengers? I know i failed math in highschool but...

I personally don't care if this movie is number 1. Avengers was a great movie and has so far had a fantastic run. It's time for another movie to have its shot at the box office, anyway.
Sanderman
Sanderman - 5/25/2012, 1:40 PM
@scabsallover no it doesn't really relate to any of the other films besides just some of the characters..be prepared though..its not that great

BuckyCap

I was less than impressed with the movie. Dialogue is used to tell you what is going on over and over and over and over again. The plot is also so simplistic that they threw in a "complicated" character to make it seem more complex than it actually is.
