Even though Renfield is set to be a comedic retelling of Bram Stoker's classic tale, Chris McKay's movie won't be stingy with the vampire violence, as it's now received an official R-rating...

Universal Pictures and director Chris McKay's horror comedy, Renfield, wrapped production earlier this year (check out some set snaps of Nicolas Cage as Dracula), and we now have some good news for horror fans who may have been concerned that the movie's lighter tone would result in a PG-13 rating.

Bloody Disgusting (via FearHQ.com) has learned that the MPA has given Renfield an R-rating for “Bloody violence, some gore, language throughout and some drug use.”

Aside from a logo reveal, we haven't seen any official promo material for Renfield yet (the poster below is fan-made), but the first trailer is expected to be released before the end of the year.

Renfield is set to hit theaters on April 14, 2023, and will focus on the title character (Hoult), who has "grown sick and tired of his centuries as Dracula’s (Cage) lackey. The henchman finds a new lease on life and maybe even redemption when he falls for feisty, perennially angry traffic cop Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina).”

Ryan Ridley penned the script, which is based on an original story outline from Robert Kirkman. McKay will also produce alongside Samantha Nisenboim and Skybound Entertainment’s film team of Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst.

In Bram Stoker's classic novel, R.M. Renfield was introduced as one of Dr. Seward's inmates before his backstory revealed that he was actually Dracula's attorney and Jonathan Harker's predecessor. Driven mad by the evil Count, Renfield became his willing acolyte, believing he would one day be given the gift of eternal life.

The character has appeared in most adaptations of the tale, and has been played by the likes of Dwight Frye in 1931's Dracula and Tom Waits in Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 version.

Two wildly different takes on vampires but, I'm looking forward to this AND the Robert Eggers remake of NOSFERATU with Bill Skarsgård. 🤓

I know that logos used on set don't always reflect on the ones used for the finished movie and/or marketing, but can't help, but to notice them paying homage to the font used on the posters for Bela Lugosi's Dracula.

I enjoy Cage movies, but cant stand awkwafina. She was the worst part of Shang-Chi. Hard pass on this.

@Reginator - so let me get this straight … you’re passing up seeing Nicolas Cage as Dracula because of her? Pssh lol

@DudeGuy - the amount of repulsiveness from her out weighs the desire to see cage.

@Reginator - Never has there been a more apt use of the phrase "fly in the ointment." Why Hollywood keeps pushing her is a head scratcher to say the least.

@J0HNS0N - she’s a horrible actress, she’s not funny, and she’s arguably been the worst part of everything she’s been in. I was actually excited for this until I found out she was in it… 😔

Sounded decent till I saw Akwafina in the pic and saw her character described as "feisty"

I love Nic Cage but this is a hard pass now. Hollywood has to learn.
