Alien Legion was an early Epic Comics title about the members of a military unit called Force Nomad, composed of the "dregs of the universe" and similar to the French Foreign Legion. The cast includes leader Sarigar, whose lower half is serpentine, fully humanoid Torie Montroc, and probably the most popular character, Jugger Grimrod, a Thraxian.
Primary creator Carl Potts and co-creators Alan Zelenetz and Frank Cirocco developed the concept, and in 1983 Epic launched the first of several Alien Legion mini-series and one-shots. Collaborators have included writers Chuck Dixon and Larry Stroman and artists Terry Austin, Whilce Portacio, and Scott Hanna, among others.
Derek Haas and Michael Brandt (The writers), the guys behind Wanted, and the new A-Team, have been writing the screenplay for Bruckheimer.
Haas said "Think the Creature Cantina goes to war," Alien Legion. The French Foreign Legion recruited all sorts of different people and Alien Legion is just like that, except these recruits come from all kinds of different planets.
Creator of Alien Legion; Carl Potts had this to say to USA Today:
"Imagine a much grittier Star Trek blended with The Dirty Dozen and Kelly's Heroes. Its popularity is evidenced by it being the longest continuously running series in the history of 1980s Marvel imprint Epic Comics." USA Today recently did a big profile on the comic series, also pointing out that it's being adapted. "Bruckheimer's never done a science-fiction before, so that challenge, I think, is something that would hold his interest. The success they've had with blending CGI and live-action characters in the Pirates of the Caribbean series could translate easily to an Alien Legion film,"
While Carl Potts is excited about the movie and also theres new comic by Dark Horse comics in 2010 in development, he sees Legion as having far more potential. "I really see this as having franchise potential. Films, books, TV and video games —Legion's one of those properties that would work well in any medium."
It seems 2010 is the year of Alien Legion, the classic series will be getting its spotlight and presented to the public in exciting new formats, this very well could give Green Lantern or even Star Wars a run for it's money.
