Did you make it in one sitting, or otherwise? (every time I start a project like this, I find it a little hard to focus...so, just wondered.)

You could use a hot sharp knife to do that. I have experience working with styrofoam to make miniature wargaming scenery, and that's generally how we worked the details into the pieces. You'll need to reseal and repaint the hammer head of course after that, but it can be done.

I'd recommend using either a crafting tool specially made for that (usually found at model railroad supply stores) or a utility knife with a fresh blade.
