Could We See Joseph Gordon-Levitt As Morpheus In A SANDMAN Movie?

According to Badass Digest (who broke the Preacher tv show news), Warner Bros. are once again gearing up to try to get a big-screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman's masterpiece off the ground -- and Levitt might just be up for the lead role of Morpheus, aka The Sandman.

Some (potentially) big news for Endless fans here: Badass Digest report that David Goyer has pitched Warner Bros. a take on Neil Gaiman's Sandman, and that they have been "very receptive" to it. Apparently Geoff Johns is behind it, AND The Dark Knight Rises' Joseph Gordon-Levitt is also involved, most likely in line to star as Morpheus himself. I do say "likely", as even the site admits that that's an educated guess and the actor may be involved in another capacity. They also stress that this is all in the very early stages, and obviously subject to change. But assuming that this pans out, what do you think of Levitt in this role? I'm a massive fan of the character, and to be honest I always pictured someone a lot taller and, well, British as The Sandman! (incidentally, Gaiman's own choices would be Benedict Cumberbatch or Tom Hiddleston) But, Levitt is a terrific actor so I'd be happy enough. What about you guys?

I want a Sandman film but I just don't see it getting the magic of the comic in movie format. So I think that if it was a HBO series that would work better. Plus then you can tell a lot more of the story.

No no no no no. There should never be a Sandman movie. (Not Gaiman's Sandman, anyway. The Golden Age Sandman could be cool, though...) Maybe a miniseries. And everybody loves JGL but he's completely wrong. It should be Cumberbatch doing his spot-on Alan Rickman impersonation.

Benedict Cumberbatch has the perfect look for playing the role of Morpheus. Plus he has the acting to chops to back it up as well.

David Goyer?

David Goyer?!

David Goyer writes EVERYTHING, literally. Cumberbatch would make a great Crow for the remake (if that's still in the works, last time I heard Luke Evans was going to be The Crow but I haven't heard much ever since).

I like it. He seems like a good fit, although I would prefer Cumberbatch (obviously)

darkknight1985@ After seeing him as Khan the only DC character I want to see Benedict Cumberbatch as is Martian Manhunter.

Dream needs a strong voice. I've loved Levitt since Brick but this character isn't for him.

I didn't dislike Man of Steel and I know that Goyer can produce good work. That said, I think that Sandman would be too much for him. He lacks subtletly.

Sandman is very possibly the greatest comic I have ever read. I really don't believe any movie can do it justice - certainly no fantasy movie has ever came anywhere close.

If I see Cumberbatch in another f.ucking movie I just might scream!! I saw him in "Twelve Years a Slave" and thought, "Really?! Why the f.uck are you here?"

On a side note another Vertigo TV series announcement is on the way.

Also, it's interesting that DC has an arrow in its quiver that Marvel doesn't have: Vertigo.

Diane Nelson said WB is VERY interested in tapping that source. We've got iZombie coming to CW, Constantine at CBS, Preacher on AMC, and another about to be announced.

On top of that they're looking a Sandman for the theaters and the Harry Potter producers are at work on adapting Fables as a replacement franchise for WB.

Granted, WB's good CBM list is pretty eclectic:

TDK trilogy, MOS, Watchmen, The Road to Perdition, V for Vendetta, Constantine (underappreciated) and Red.

LOOK at the costume they were able to pull off back in 1990 in the TV Series The Flash. Very similar in design.

I think I'd rather have someone remake The Godfather than to ruin Sandman. And that's saying a lot. Nothing against Levitt, but Goyer sucks.

You are correct the one that appeared in the Flash series was called NightShade it was based on The Original Sandman but for whatever stupid reason they changed the name. I actually prefer the one from the Flash series.

I'm surprised they're still trying to do this. Sandman has been in development hell FOREVER. I don't trust anybody at W.B with this tbh. There is a lot of subtle storytelling going on in this series...the action is definitely not the star attraction in a Sandman movie.

While Cumberbatch has seemingly been in everything lately, I would rather have him than JGL as Morpheus. JGL Wwould make a great Corinthian, though.

And of course, no to Goyer...why are people even mentioning his name for this? Does he write everything for WB now??

Last I heard, Jon Peters was involved as producer. I don't want to see Sandman molested by Jon Peters. I would rather not have a Sandman movie at all and protect the integrity of the character then to have Peters anywhere near it. Now, if they get other people involved and reign him in or push him out all together, maybe.
