DC Comics Movie Adapations UPDATE

DC Comics has hundreds of comic heroes and villains ready for the transition to the big screen. Here is an update of some of the films in development.

DC Comics and Warner Bros. are putting together a similar sort of strategy to rival Marvel's in which they have several heroes having there individual films leading up to a Justice League film by 2015. This includes Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter. You will notice that Batman is not in that list and that depends on Chris Nolan as to whether he will carry on with the series.

Superman: Warner Bros. is currently planning for a complete overhaul of the Superman series with a few directors and writer already having pitched ideas including Mark Millar. At current, there is no script, no writers and no directors. (If you would like to see my version of a reboot, check out my article on this fansite). A Superman reboot will likely hit theatres in summer 2012.

Batman: After the successful Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, Warner Bros. is keen to make Batman its leading franchise but Chris Nolan is worried that "Batman 3" won't live it to its predocessors wanting a good story. He is also drained and sceptical after Heath Ledger's death after playing the Joker. Batman 3 will happen and be in theatres by 2012 along with a Superman reboot.

Green Lantern: The only real big name character movie in serious development at the moment. Ryan Reynolds has been cast as Hal Jordan with the movie having a full crew and casting is underway. This movie will be a hit much like Iron Man and will hit theatres in summer 2011.

Flash: A Flash movie has been in development for over 10 years now and has had varied directors and writers but at the moment David Dobken is directing and Geoff Johns is penning the script. Likely going to be released in 2011 along with Green Lantern if it picks up speed. Ryan Reynolds was a fan favourite to portray Wally West but now can't due to playing Hal Jordan.

Wonder Woman: Probobly the hardest script and movie developed by Warner Bros. and DC Comics, it has had a variety of writers and directors setting the movie at different time points. At current, Joel Silver is directing with Jennison and Strickland writing a modern script that will tie with the other films being released. Release date will probobly be either 2012 or 2013 depending how bold Warner Bros. is.

Aquaman: A film is in early development with Ben Grant writing the screenplay.

Martian Manhunter: A movie has been mooted but nothing has been developed.

Justice League: After the disastrous attempt with George Miller's Justice League: Mortal, Warner Bros. had a rethink and is planning releasing 4 solo films before the Justice League movie. They plan to have all movie interlinking in one universe like Marvel's. Expect to see a new director and writing team on board and to see this film in 2013.

To recap
2011 - Green Lantern
2011/12 - Flash
2012 - Superman reboot
2012 - Batman 3
2013 - Wonder Woman
2013 - Justice League

Sounds exciting i am really looking forward to see how this pans out. I just hope Warner Bros. doesn't muck it up like they do most things. Only successful comic movies they have done are Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Lets hope the Superman movie especially is good.

I dont think a Manhunter movie would work. They should just have his orgin in the JL movie just like New Frontier

Awesome article.

Definately agree with you there InSpace. MM should be intro'd in JL instead of his own feature length film. That would save money on WB's part and would be a better way to go about it for fans too. Carl Lumbly for MM!

I really, REALLY hope everything turns out great. I prefer DC to Marvel and I hope they can get their act together and bring us Flash, Aquaman, Green Arrow, and Justice League films that us fans deserve.

Hah, it seems to be DC's modus operandi - do what Marvel is doing. However, in this case, I'm glad they're finally getting the lead out.

At this point the list does look to be very ambitious on DC/WB's part. Considering how they love to talk about doing something cool, they get someone to write it, line up a director and maybe some talent then let it go tits up.

A Flash movie by 2011 would be awesome. Since Reynolds is Hal Jordan, I put in my vote for Ryan Kwanten as Wally West.

I hope DC goes in a different direction than Marvel. Instead of crossing over heroes they need to crossover villains. Take a Maxwell Lord or Ras al Ghul type villain, put him in all the DC movies .(Actually Ras al Ghul would work great because it would connect the Batman movies with the rest of DC's properties.) He would play a Nick Fury type role but instead he'll recruit villains which in turn will form the basis for the creation of the Justice League and lead into a JL movie. Idk the thought in my head is much better than I am able to describe it but basically I think they should take the approach that has worked in the Batman movies and have strong villainous characters in all their properties.

WW and JL wont make it unless the Mayans are wrong about Dec 21, 2012. I hope they put a rush on those 2.

"It's a shame that MARVEL started making films that appreciate their fans and made their movies to lead up to a team movie, which is an awesome idea, and DC is going to copy it completely to rake in the cash. GO MARVEL... DC.. get your own ideas"

hahahahahaha. Thats some funny shit. Bad DC! Bad! How dare you try to give the fans what they want too, theres only room for one comic movie franchise in these here parts!

this is pretty exciting news. but how can they have the JL without batman? can't! and i think superman should not be rebooted. just my opinion

Yeah... sorry Fotc but having individual characters release solo movies before a team movie isnt really an original idea... its just plain common sense ;)

batman is usually portrayed as a pert time leaguer so they could make it without him. maybe make some reference to him and why hes not there. or do a phone conference with him for consultation or somehting. but they could do it. nto saying they should, but they could

I must correct one thing here: the first two Superman films were pretty successful at the box office (especially the first one, as memory serves), and those were both distributed by Warners.

As for this present group of movies, I think it's a fine idea to emulate Marvel's strategy of several indivdual movies that lead into the big group film (JLA, in this instance). However.. I just don't see Aquaman or Martian Manhunter carrying a whole movie.

I'm really excited to hear that Geoff Johns is writing the script for the Flash movie. At least I'll know the story in this film will be great!

I'll continue to say that Superman doesn't need a reboot. Everyone over 3 knows his origin. It's been done and done to death. Let's move on from there.

I like Anil Rickly's idea of building to Darkseid as the villain for the JLA movie. That would be epic! We could see some of his minions used as villains in the other films, or just see them in the shadows, watching the heroes and manipulating the villains they fight.

WB should also put together a seperate studio within a studio for these properties. This would allow for better orginization and pooling of talent. It works for thier animation branch.

Superman worries me as he is the foundation of the DC universe. The worry comes from all these projects working towards the ultimate JLA pic without care to the individual films. WB is bad about not taking care of an existing property without a central guiding hand. Harry Potter is different in that if they F*** it up, all of power that be JK will unload in court.

Following the Marvel model could be good. All of these characters need to see the light of day so the general public can finally know what comic fans have always understood of these characters. Then more can be had.
SpideyWidey
SpideyWidey - 7/22/2009, 7:58 AM
I agree with Anil Rickly, no Superman reboot. The only thing left from Returns that they cant carry over is the kid, and they could just get rid of him by saying he was made by Braniac to get to Superman or something like that.

Okay, here we go again. We've seen this what... 3 times now??? And there has yet to be ANY valid link to where this information has come from or to who actually "publicaly" stated this. Aside from what has already been released for Green Lantern, NONE OF THIS is legit!!! WB still has NO MOVIE in production for Superman!!! Millar is IN NO WAY, SHAPE OR FORM, officially attached to a Superman reboot!!! They DO NOT know if they will reboot or follow SR!!! NO info WHATSOEVER has been released as for a third Nolan Bat-film or ANY bat-film at that, let alone a release date for 2012!!! And NOTHING has been released as for a Wonder Woman, MM or any other JLA oriented news aside from pre-production hell!!! Reading "probably this" and "probably that" IS NOT encouraging in the least!!! It's one guy's assumptions which are unfounded at best!!! This whole article is idiotic, insignificant, null and void!!! Yes Phinehas and thegreek, IT SHOULD be deleted and kept the [frick] away from the front page. Now, either this article should be labeled as an "editorial" or as "fan fic" i don't really care, but this should NOT be concidered news UNTIL THIS GUY PROVIDES HIS SOURCES. It is misleadingly wrong information until PROVEN otherwise.

Interesting reading. Good article and i am excited to see where DC goes with this.
ButI laughed out loud at the use of the phrase "compete with Marvel". Who are they kidding? Following the Marvel model is a fine idea but I wouldn't expect the box office numbers to be particularly exceptional on any of these except for whatever Nolan does next with Batman.

And lets not forget the supposition concerning ANOTHER Superman reboot. I wonder what Bryan Singer must be thinking these days. WB: "Hey if we run out of tp, there's always Singer." ha
But seriously the stigma of the last one will probably damage the property forever. Personally I don't agree with the popular notion that it was the worst travesty since the Dolph Lundgren Punisher. It had problems. There were parts of it that bothered me, but I would never say it was Elektra bad.

Green Lantern will be a hit, just like Iron Man!????

You're joking right. GL is a very shaky character for film. It could come off as really cheesy and bad if the effects aren't perfect. I am not a big fan of GL, mainly because he basic "powers" are really silly and childish, but we'll all see how this film turns out.

Nicholsy- It's your responsibility to add your sources to any "news" related article you write. And it's the editors responsibility to make sure YOU DID put them up BEFORE this gets on the front page. Can you imagine just how bad this website would be if every single reader had to google for the "facts" for EVERY SINGLE ARTICLE??? "Oh cool, a new article posted! I'll go spend hours googling for their source since i also have to google the last 15 that were just added!!!". This website would become as retarded as "The UK Sun".

Just to let you know there Sherlock, I just googled Batman 3 and NO ARTICLE on there confirmed your assumptions. No "official" word from either WB, DC or Nolan. In fact, here's what 411mania.com had to say, dated July 14th:

"With Christopher Nolan undecided on his involvement in the next film, Batman 3 also has not been scheduled."

So, the only article showing up on the first page as saying that "Batman 3 will happen and be in theatres by 2012 along with a Superman reboot." is YOUR sorry excuse for a news article!!!

Here's what they had to say about your Superman Reboot:

"It has been reported that Warner Bros. has to have a Superman movie in production by 2011 due to the legal battle between the studio, the estate of Superman creator Jerry Siegel and DC Comics."

Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov DID tell The Wall Street Journal that the studio is going to be reintroducing Superman... BUT THAT WAS IN AUGUST OF [frick]ING 2008!!!

And this was reported right on this very site:

"Alan Horn (WB Chief) said at the trial that a Superman movie is not currently in development and no script exists".

That article was posted as well on the 14th of July this year!!! In fact, here's the link:

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/LetsCutTheBS/news/?a=8545

YOU are talking out of your [frick]ING ASS, GIVING FALSE HOPES!!! This whole article SHOULD be either labeled "Editorial", "Fan fic" or be taken down because it is FALSE information!!! It should've NEVER appeared on the front page as "News". You FABRICATED your release dates, don't gimme that shit saying that "you simply forgot to put your source on", NOWHERE can you find those dates!!!

CorndogBurglar - 7/22/2009, 11:37 AM
@ shaman i kind of have to agree with you. i'm pretty sure i remember reading that Nolan didn't want his batman to be in a justice league movie because it would screw up the universe that he created in his batfilms. that being said, why would Warner rush to put out batman 3 before the justice league movie? that means they would more than likely have to get rid of nolan and go for a new director, which in turn would screw up the nolan universe as well. if they are planning a batman film by 2012, i think the best we can hope for is a new, nolan free bat franchise that better fits the JLA mold. if they want to make a nolan batman 3, then they'll have to have two bat series' going at the same time. in my opinion, if batman is going to be in the JLA movie, it looks like we've seen the last of nolan's batverse...then again, do batman and supes really need new movies in order for a justice league movie to be made?? everyone already knows who they are, and their stories. make movies for the lesser knowns like green arrow and GL (i know GL is being made).

@ Shaman- Man you are thorough....

@ Everyone who is hating on DC - Sweet Jesus people your jealousy stems way to far ... lol

Also about a Superman Reboot i already said that should someone like Mongul come to earth kill supermans kid and that solves everyone prob withthe kid ... And then Superman can lay some woop ass on Mongul and there we have our major fight ... Plus we can have Darksied at the end actually moving the peices like Mongul to move towards a Justice League Movie ... TADA

CorndogBurglar - 7/22/2009, 12:15 PM
@ the greek, i would love to see a movie with darkseid in it, maybe for a JLA sequel??? i think the first JLA movie should be a throwback to the oldschool JLA. the villain for the movie should actually be all the villains from the movies they are planning to make, LEGION OF DOOM MOFUGGA'S!!!!!!!

in fact, they could follow the basic story from "Justice". that would be awesome, villains start solving the problems of the world, then blame the heroes for never using their powers to do it before. in effect turning the world against the heroes.

@Nicholsy

That article says "4 movies in the next 3 years".

The date of the article August 8, 2008

That means by 2011 they were going to have 4 movies out.

GL is the only movie moving forward at this time, so I highly doubt this article has any relevance anymore.

I agree with Shaman. You are inferring things you cannot prove with out-of-date information. It is a guess on your part.

Even in your rebuttal to SHaman you use words like "it is likely" and "that would make sense". These are phrases of opinion, not fact.

This "article" should be taken down.
