Hello everyone, Sorry it's been long since an editorial. I've got something to talk about that seriously annoys me to no end. This isn't meant to be offensive to the actor Johnny Depp, I agree with many he's a good actor, but more of the fans of him who annoy me in this light.

We all know Johnny Depp got his big BIG start in Wes Craven's Horror Classic A Nightmare on Elm St. and he acted well in it, but unbeknown to the filmmakers, a terrible terrible chain of events would stem from his on screen debut, that horrible thing is called "Fans Who Overate Actors, who are only as good as Actors who aren't" Again I'm not saying Johnny Depp is a bad actor, i'm just saying fans give him Way too much credit. While actors such as Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ed Norton, and Christian Bale (just to name a few) aren't as Culturally large. Some of the blame lies in the pure truth of some are only fans because they think he's sexy and don't care about his acting, others are fans because he's both, and some like him just because he's generally a decent actor. Personally I'm a fan, he's not my favorite actor, but he's on the top 20 list. But the people who slap his name on everything for a quick buck are just as horrible as those who give worship to this. People just get too obsessive and some even get violent just defending the opinion he's the best actor, verbally that's OK, but when you get so silly about it "you deny other actors talents and even go so far as saying he could be good in anything" then you are just too obsessive and closed minded about one person.

I like Christian Bale as an actor, but there's a shit ton of roles i would never even want him considered for, same thing applys with Johnny Depp. He's really bigger than no actor should be, Yes actors become role models people idiotically worship some of them and go beyond the safe zone boundaries of becoming a fan. People we need to draw this back, and Big time, and it's not only with just actors i see this, We have fans of Tim Burton who defend Alice in Wonderland, who Defend anything he's done when he like most other directors have made box office blunders that most people dislike. Yet like with Johnny Depp he's just as overrated, he's got talent, they both do, but people please this is just too out of control for this situation to go on.

I understand the worship side, ii have a brother of mine and we argue many things especially concerning Heath Ledger(may he rest in peace), such as who's Joker was the best, Whether or not He got the Oscar because he deserved it or because he isn't with us anymore. And i give an almost faithful worship to my opinions to an outrageous extent, but i don't buy everything with his face on it. I own maybe 2 DVD's featuring Mr. Ledger, Brothers' Grimm (a gift) and of course The Dark Knight. People get crazy with this idea that Johnny is beyond perfect in his acting, he's the best, all that stuff, but to be honest, there's better more dedicated Actors who learn the role just as well and sometimes even better than Johnny does, but what will a Johnny Depp fan say if you present this statement to one: "The Film was very well written, the acting was perfect, Christian Bale was perfect as Batman" I swear ones i would talk to would always reply "It was good, But Johnny Depp could've made it better."

Sad thing is, even though for half of this article it goes without saying, most of the people who are like this (this is pertaining to my specific area of Columbus, IN) are in fact females generally 13-24. To be frank about it, I'm starting to lose my mind with this, I'm not wishing them to stop liking the guy, just stop overrating his ability, stop acting like he's literally a gift from god, and for the love of god stop using him as your backgrounds on myspace and such, he's a decent actor but he's not the best. Maybe if he one like 7 Oscars or something I'd be more willing to allow this shit to slide out of the grace of the prestigious award, but still people treat him like he shits gold nuggets and frankly it's getting very sad and depressing to see people so attatched to this guy. He's an actor, doesn't mean you need to follow his every move.

Anyway out of fear of jumping off topic I'm ending my argument by just saying I understand if he's your favorite actor, everyone has one, just don't be overly obsessive about it, it's creepy and is just plain annoying.

Decent article man.

Johnny is one of my favourite actors, he's definitely in my top 5, maybe top 3. But yea this kind of hero worship is really misplaced, people generally forget that before he went near any of his films, almost all of the dialogue from the finished piece is already written and waiting to be interpreted.
He really does have an extraordinary talent for creating very different character embodiments in each role though. More so than a huge number of the top actors out there.
In fairness, a lot of actors, even though they are amazingly convincing in their craft, play basically the same character in every film who is simply in a different situation.
Denzel Washington being one guy who is greeeeat but does often play Denzel as a cop, Denzel as a bad-ass etc.

I think the notion that Johnny could make any role his own is simply down to the huge variations between characters he plays. Imagine being in a room with Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands, The Mad Hatter and John Dillinger. As opposed to a room with every Jack Nicholson character ever. There would be a whole lot more variance in the handful of Depp's roles compared the entire filmography of a lot of other actors.
But you're obviously correct to say he can't play every role possible, that's just stupid.

But I'm not defending fanaticism, and I realize you weren't bashing Depp. Just throwing in my thoughts.

I haven't seen many Depp movies cause they're usually way too weird for me but from what I've seen he's pretty damn good.

I totally agree with FM's comment above. I was watching Conan interview James Franco last night and they talked about how most actors today only play one role. Like the roles are tweaked a little but basically it's the same thing over and over again and it's so true.

Joseph Gordon Levit is talented no doubt about that. I think he is better than Tom Hardy but thats of course my humble opinion. But I think Johnny Depp is arguably better than both of them. He is a very versitile actor and a really fun actor to watch. JGL has been great ever since 3rd Rock From The Sun, and especially Mysterious Skin.

Hard to know how to respond to this Editorial.

So let me try a few of them...

My first reaction was along the lines of 'So who exactly are you that you get to define who is great and who is not?'. Everybody has their own opinions on that subject and each and every one is just as valid as yours. Sorry about that since it seems to annoy you.

But then I realized you were trying to tell people not to be Fans. On a Site filled with... Fans. Why? Making movies is not about saving the world it is about fun. People get all head over heels in love with Actors because they want to. It adds a little something to their lives.

There is no 'best' Actor. There is no one list that defines them. We all have our likes and dislikes and that is not going to change.

jeeze.

@Everyone, your completely misunderstanding the entire message the editorial, I'm not saying he shouldn't have fans, I'm saying that his fans shouldn't plaster his [frick]ing face over everything

@Intruder No i liked Inception because unlike all the other shit around it it has some intellegence to it.

@nuck82 [frick] off, DC's treating their writers, artist and actors from their films with more respect than marvel

@TheDarqueOne you really just don't understand i like everyone else have my favorite actors, my point is that we don't need Johnny Depp's face on every [frick]ing thing, he's a good actor, but people overrate his ability and it gets annoying

Honestly i got no problem with Depp. I just think Tim Burton loves him too much. He is in most Burton films I've noticed.

I really can't help but agree with everything you've said. I'm a Depp fan, I have several of his lesser known films on dvd and it bugs the crap out of me seeing people slap his name onto anything and thinking he'll bring a knock-out performance. He doesn't. He'll deliver something decent but will leave you wanting something more.

@Intruder, I've seen Hardy in several things other than Inception. His performances are always charismatic, different and enjoyable. The same applies to Levitt, though I've seen him in less.
Because of that I would honestly say that makes them better actors than Depp.

Well...hmmm....mind is jumping...processing....oh I got it. Oh, I lost it. Johnny Depp rocks, he has yet to do a role I didn't love him in. I get what your saying though, totally. He'd be a terrible deadpool, and a terrible Batman. I've actually seen all of JGL's movies except for Inception. I gotta say he's probably just as versatile as Depp is, he's just never been given the chance to play those type of characters. Johnny Depp stated years ago, that he was extremely picky about the roles he chooses, and has turned down a lot of movies that have brought other actors to fame. Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe are two that come to mind. Don't remember the movies, but you get the point. I think Depp is a great actor. But, your right, he's not right for everything. I've never seen Tom Hardy in anything that I'm aware of so I can't judge him at all. I like Leonardo Dicaprio though, he gets a lot more hate than he deserves...That had nothing to do with any of this. I just wanted to throw it in.
