Expect To See Higher 3D Ticket Prices This Weekend

Tickets can go up as much as 26% for the latest movie craze.

Enjoy all those new movies in stunning 3D? Looking forward to Clash of the Titans and all our beloved upcoming CBM's? Well, the time has come to pay the piper, or in this case, the movie theaters. Analysts are saying ticket prices for the 3D package could go up as high as 26% starting immediately this weekend.

It was said that the average 3D surcharge ran between $2 and $3 but some theaters could be charging $3.50 or more and, in large markets like New York and Los Angeles, the charge could be as much as $5 or more. The numbers, which came from a Wall Street media analyst, do not include extra fees for IMAX 3D.

According to Wall Street Journal:

The new prices take effect Friday in many markets across the country in theaters owned by such major exhibitors as Regal Entertainment Group, Cinemark Holdings Inc. and AMC Entertainment Inc.

DogsOfWar-Just something to brighten your day as you head off to the multiplex this weekend. This was bound to happen as the demand to squeeze every dollar out of most movies within the first few weeks of showing. How much will ticket prices be next year for Green Lantern, Thor and First Avenger: Captain America?

I live in NY, and it has in fact been raised $5. The worst part is that nearly every movie theater in my area only has these 3D films in 3D.

It's annoying.

I feel for you, supermarioworldE. If people like the 3D thing then they'll have no problem paying a few dollars more, but it shouldn't be forced on you.

Thanks for the info, DogsOfWar.

Wow they really expect us to be happy about this....

Economy is not doing so well so why don't we make people happier by adding more bucks for them to give us through 3D.

Oh well I'm going to watch in regular format so suck it you moneyhungry douchebags!

If there is a big enough backlash, theaters might pull back on this rate hike.

Choose old school, choose 2D (or even older school, choose a book)

@Bzzd

It's just annoying is all. The worst that could happen is that i'll just probably wind up watching these 3D films online in 2D.

@Soperman

You think i can move in to your hometown? lol This 3D crap is bothersome

@Dogs

Does a nude magazine count?

I just wish they'd use some lube if they're going to rape us. Never have and never will like 3D. It will be gone in two year's time. Just like every other 3D craze in movie history.

Movie prices shouldn't cost as much as $8.00 dollars anyway. If they would only charge $7.00 a pop for just the regular movies instead of jacking the price of a regular, non-3D movie up to $8.00 or $9.00, more theaters would be making more money, because people would be going to the theaters more often. Instead the only thing theaters are worried about is the opening week of a movie instead of how long they're going to run it in the theater. More ticket sales makes more money, not higher prices.

That goes triple for movie theater food...
$4.50 for a hotdog? JUST a hotdog? F*ck you movie theater, I'll just wait for the DVD to come out so I can chow-down at home. I can get a six-inch sub for that kind of money.

movie theaters have alwayz had outrages prices..yet we all still go and pay what we pay lol..the fact that 3D movie tickets are goin up is no surprise...but they should hav the decency 2 offer it in 2D at a standard price as well :)

Idiots just lost a ton of money. I was planning to take my son to see "How to train your Dragon" tonight, but not now. Heck, I'm not gonna see a movie this year except for Kick Ass and Iron Man now.

Why is Blockbuster failing? They charged $3 a night for a movie when I can go to another place that only charges $1.50 and I get a free kids movie for every regular one I get.

Way to shoot yourself in the foot AMC.

3D should just be saved for movies really that would benefit from 3D, like GREEN LANTERN, other movies can go and swing! : P

3D this 3D that. It's like Hollywood's way for making money. Which is why I think the GL film will make more than the Thor movie. I mean it's soo annoying this 3D craze. What next? Will every action film be made into 3D, then romantic comedies, porn, and then tv shows. *don't get any ideas hollywood*

@Betty: Booze and Bitches will get you everywhere today, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

@Grif: I'll second that, although I would pay extra for 3D porn...

@GTRMan: I never looked at it that way; would it increase bragging rights if you over-inflate the ticket prices?

This 3D crap is just another phase. They did this one time before and it started out strong ,then just faded away. I hate 3D it gives me a headache. I'll just wait for the DVDs to come out or pick the 2D option, most of the 3D movies have a 2D option.
Dmon
Dmon - 3/26/2010, 7:59 AM
They are so stupid and take us for granted. Remember a few years ago the music industry did this and what happened it caused a huge increase in downloading and they lost out big time, then finally they lowered the price back down but to this day they still suffer from it because of all the new downloaders it created. It is even worse now for the movie industry to do it because of the way the economy is right now. But hey Hollywood helped get the president elected and he will protect them they have already been working on bills to regulate the internet.

Also right now they are taking out 2D theaters and putting in more bigger screen theaters exclusively for 3D. And alot of places are going to offer 3D version of a movie only and do so now.
