Joseph Gordon-Levitt Tweets About SANDMAN News; Hints At Plot

The actor took to Twitter to confirm that he is indeed involved with both David Goyer and Neil Gaiman on a big-screen Sandman movie. He also gave a brief, but interesting hint that is sure to please fans of the excellent Vertigo comic.

The below Tweets may not signify that much to those unfamiliar with Neil Gaiman's Sandman series, but fans will know that the inclusion of the word "prelude" likely refers to the first story arc, which is known as Preludes And Nocturnes. Why is that good news? Well as you can see from Gordon-Levitt's second Tweet, it suggests that he, Goyer and co. are not planing on trying to condense Gaiman's 85 issue run, or cherry pick from it for one single movie - rather they are using those first 8 issues as a starting point. Of course that's a lot to assume from a one word hint..but I'd say it's a good sign at least. The TDKR actor also acknowledges the ambiguous nature of Morpheus - hopefully a sign that there won't be an attempt to turn the character into a clear-cut hero.

Sandman is one of the most mesmerizing and captivating works of literature I have ever read. Neil Gaiman can do no wrong and I am more than thrilled to know that he is involved.

I am pretty sure they will not connect this to the DCU but if they were they can easily write in Constantine into this universe.

If you are not familiar with Sandman you need to start Goodling or Wikipedia the stories. But to make it easy on you, they are basically starting at the beginning and spanning this maybe over a few movies. It would be difficult to try to make one single movie based on this character.

While I've never read Sandman, getting Levitt to star and direct is just [frick]ing awesome. Happy to see DC rolling out the red carpet of an awesome future.

Preludes & Nocturnes really doesn't seem to me like a great story to adapt, especially with Goyer's heavy hand. But I can't imagine a Sandman movie working at all, so... fingers crossed.

You know if they are basing this off of Preludes and Nocturnes they did feature several DC characters including Constantine, Original Sandman, Batman, and Scarecrow.

Wow good way to tie this into a Constantine or Justice League Dark movie.

This is just the beginning of WB/DC's three pronged attack at taking over the CBM marathon.

I've been saying it for awhile, now. WB has just now figured out they have something Marvel doesn't: VERTIGO.

Fables is currently being adapted by the Harry Potter guys for the big screen, too. I'm certain we'll be hearing about Dark Universe pretty soon.

We are getting some really adult themed cbms soon!!!!!!!!!

I don't know about this. Sandman is such a COMIC BOOK story, I don't think they should be asking CAN they do it, but IF THEY SHOULD, which I'm just uncertain about it. Also, while I will defend Man of Steel to the ends of the earth, I don't really think David S. Goyer should be writing that.

So Goyer is a producers or writer? how the hell he is going to find the time to make 2 movies? Bats Supes and Sandman?

Well first post and have to say mixed feelings about this. I read alot of Neils Sandman work and enjoyed it when it was in detective mode.. the literal stuff with Shakespehere and the emotional manifistation of death and the such...yawn hoping JGL will be the lead in a great 30's period piece with action and deduction.

While Sandman doesn't really participate in the DCU, itself, he comes from a very strong DCU lineage, pre-New 52.

Wonder Woman + Steve Trevor = Hippolyta (Lyta) Trevor

Hawman + Hawkgirl = Hector Hall

Lyta Trevor (Fury) + Hector Hall (Dr. Fate) = Morpheus (Sandman)

As for the cinematic universe, I'd prefer Sandman be more standalone.

It's been reported that Goyer is not writing the script. He just pitched the story to WB and Gaiman and they liked it.
Production is looking for another writer to pen the script.

Goyer only has a contract for 3 DCCU movies and he's done 2 of them: MOS and MOS 2. Note, he's and Snyder are writing MOS 2. I'm betting the next movie in his contract is JL.

After that, he'll be the godfather of the DCCU moving forward. There's no way he's writing everything. There are independent projects he'll want to work on that WB promised him.
