NEW SITE FEATURE: Announcing CBM's "Public Square"

Have you noticed those little troll icons appearing in some user's comments? Learn about CBM's new, one-of-a-kind, anti-troll reporting system and how you can help us keep the site civil.

Our CBM community is one of the coolest on the Internet! We have some of the LARGEST comments sections online and enjoy seeing our readers actively contribute in articles and chat. It is our goal to keep this site as free and fun as possible.

BUT... With a site as large as CBM is, its no secret that we have our fair share of Trolls, Flamers and Spammers--not to mention just plain bad behavior that happens here. It's always been difficult to police because we like to give our users lots of freedom. And let's face it, sometimes we all enjoy a little debate--even a few well made snide retorts, and an insult or two. But we also know that it can get out of hand and devolve into stuff that crosses a line for many users.

In the past, when we would get a complaint about a user or a comment, we'd have to track it down and verify that it was as bad as reported. Check the user's past comments (or chat logs) to determine if this was just an aberration or if he/she was an actual troll trying to cause trouble for the site. Then, depending on the info gathered, we'd decide to just give a warning to the abuser or ban them from the site. Obviously, every case differs, and it takes a LOT of time.

We needed to find a better way to combat this problem. So, we've been wracking our brains for months now, and have come up with a solution that will allow YOU, the user, to be the judge on what you will tolerate on the site. We think we're the only site to have this, and its a completely unique idea.

We're bringing back Medieval Justice and putting it online!

Obviously, the system is new, and we'll be working out some kinks for the next few days. But as you help us by reporting legitimate abuse we think this idea will help keep our site civil and deter those who want only to cause trouble.

(Note: Before anybody get's their panties in a wad, listen here. If you find yourself with an abuse icon it doesn't mean you are in immediate danger and we are going to disable your account. This system is to help us better identify and track CONSISTENT abusers and serious trolls. They are the only ones that need fear our medieval justice. And no, Grif is not in danger even though he tops the list of reports. Everybody know's he's our resident contrarian, but he's not a Troll.)

Lmfao! Fantastic idea. I knew we had the reporting system but the Hall of Shame is great! Surprised Grif holds top spot though. Anyone who truly knows this site and it's users know Grif for being negative towards everything and generally grumpy but ultimately harmless. Not surprised to see a certain second placer up near the top though!

interesting.... I guess it's unanimous that Griff is a character troll, but how is Griff a "spammer" according to the definition in the guide? Per faq icon a Spammer is "Abusing CBM to sell products or websites. Note: True spammers will be disabled immediately."

As long as I've been here, I've never see Griff try to sell something.

Galactus insert: These are some of the kinks that will be worked out of the system as everyone is educated about it and learns what the different icons mean. Right now there are some wrong reports in some categories mucking up the list. As for Griff's spam icon, obviously someone reported Griff for spam a few times--probably because of those videos he likes to post. "Man vs. Wolvering" etc. So, that is actually legit as spam can just be unwanted or nonsensical crapoloa. That is ALSO probably why he also has the nutjob icon. We may just have to add a "contrarian" or "Mr. negativity" icon just for him.

@BlackSands

Well, posting the exact same comment on every article with the same video is spamming so.. :P

But wouldn't a true troll actually enjoy being on this list? Possibly even strive for the #1 position? lol. Seems like more of a reward to me :P Also, despite the obvious reasons for grif being #1, we should get together and vote him out, lol. I was surprised to see a few of these people on here. Not all "trolls" are bad.

Galactus Insert: The TRUE trolls are going to be easily identified with this system and will quickly find their accounts disabled, and their IP addresses banned.

Excellent point big G :P Guess the worst that could happen is that this new system draws them out in the open, lol.

@ZeroEthic and NorseGod, true... but I guess it should a separate category if that is the case, and the firster icon already included that criteria in regards to senseless comments. LOL, can you imagine a category exclusively for Griff alone though??? :P

teabag is a troll? i don't think so he provides us with great amount of pictures of BOOBS!

Galactus Insert: Read the icon descriptions on that page. I suspect teabag has a little pervert icon for all his pics. But as long as he doesn't break the pic posting rules for racy pics, he's in no danger of being dumped. Although I can't help that other users are reporting him as a pervert. I'm sure he'll see that icon as a badge of honor.

@NorseGod... Grif could be our very own Grinch LMAO. When I was new to this site a year ago, I wasn't used to Grif being Grif, but then I realized that he's the token site hardcase and some people try to emulate him - and fall flat.... in fact, I've never seen Grif take things personally and attack another poster via cyberbullying..... some of the worst I've encountered here that I've noticed were actual threats of bodily harm between members - some of those actually got a little disturbing. It's sad to see these new systems of enforcement in place, but it is understandable.... unfortunately, like with everything else... this can be easily abused. Hopefully, someone checks these out diligently in case some just click on the buttons due to some idiotic ideas.

Some of the nicest guys made their way onto that list but I'm nowhere to be found? I'm insulted! Surely someone has to have taken one of my comments the wrong way...

Galactus Insert: Noone gets listed for just a single report, and the same person cannot report you more than once. It takes multiple reports to get on the list from several people. Also, if you notice all those who are listed that don't show icons, its because they have been reported for mutliple things, but not ENOUGH reports in a single abuse category to get the icon to appear. Take heart indoraptor12, I'm sure you'll get an icon eventually.

@demonhunter15: not really immature. regardless of what "comes standard" in the internet, the lack of common decency due to personal character attacks between some members have led to this point thanks to some "profane post wars". It's their own damn fault this happened. Most of us acknowledge that some children come to this site due to the universal love of comic books and comic book movies from children to senile.... so seeing some stuff like those do NOT set a good example.

Trolling shouldn't be standard AT ALL, especially Trolling that eventually leads to cyberbullying regardless of age group.

I gotta say, I've been a lurker on this site for about 6 months now, and this new trolling punishment concept is what really convinced me to finally sign up, just so I could show my support! Good going, CBM! Huge fan, now even more so.

@galactus
thats how it all starts.

1. You sensor ur site off the supposedly "foul" language while people all over the world use it in their dining room and watch on tv even nickelodeon.
2. You add abuse button that are "counter productive" and helps "Legions" or "Bully groups" to ban anybody whom they don't like personally be it "race/country/continent/language".
3. Next step you will make this site registration "invitation only",thus making already established Bullies stronger.
4. Next step,u will monetize the site with "premier pass subscription"
5. Their you have it ,a VEVO kinda Website that ones use to serve CBM fans.

And we say that Youtube has changed for worse.
No need of this fascism.
If u don't like anybody's comment,ignore it.

I like this new system. I shouldn't be called names and attacked personally because I foresee the Spider-man reboot and Conan 3D as crap coming soon.

Aye, make a penalty system for not proof reading articles before posting them. Run on sentences, misspelled words and missing words in an article are hard to read. And annoying.

Jolt17
Jolt17 - 5/17/2011, 2:06 AM
Um...pretty...okay!

I say you'll need to check the reports too, since some people just hate a certain user that they will keep reporting that person's comments no matter what.

Plus...c'mon, you just don't need to take on grif that seriously!

Imo those grif-hunters should be reported instead. They spam the comments section with their unecessary hate toward grif.

And I won't mind if the serious trolls and spammers (remember those shoe-sellers?) get dropped off the site!

Well okay, but pretty good this is, way to go big G!

Jolt17 I agree. This dude Grif controls a large number of people's lives on this site. THEY, are more annoying and obnoxious than any TROLL. Remove THEM. Stop being a puppet. I have yet to see him even respond directly to a user, let a lone insult them or wish death on them. Anyone who's mind and emotions are so weak that they can't ignore him should turn off the computer and find something else to do.
