POLL: What Is Your Favorite R Rated COMIC BOOK MOVIE?

POLL: What Is Your Favorite R Rated COMIC BOOK MOVIE?

With Dredd hitting US theaters this week, I thought we'd take a look back on some other successful - and not so successful - R rated comic book films from the past, and see which one comes out on top with you CBMers..

The comic book movie genre is not generally something that lends itself to too many R rated (usually the equivalent to as "18" in the UK) movies, since so many comic books are aimed at a general audience. Plus, even when a certain character, or characters, would benefit from a more adult orientated movie, studios are hesitant to go down that road because of the risk that comes along with dispensing with that all important kiddie dollar a CBM will usually rake in. But sometime it's just unavoidable, and thankfully over the years a few studios/directors have had the guts to go all out and produce some great rated R cinema. Of course, they haven't always been so great either! Below we have a list of most (I didn't include every one, if you were planning on voting for Barb Wire for example you're out of luck!) of the R rated CBMs we have had so far for you to vote on and choose your favorite..

Note: Dredd is not playing everywhere yet, so hasn't been included.

Difficult choice. I love The Crow for nostalgic value. Hugo Weaving's portrayal as V was downright amazing. What Zack Snyder is able to do with a CBM is always impressive. Sin City really captured the spirit of the comics (Marv = badass).

I gotta give it to Watchmen, though. Simply for the sheer magnitude that Snyder was able to accomplish with one film. He pushed the envelope for what a CBM could do. That being said I will never love the ending! Giant squid monster was so important to the story! It was beat by beat perfect the rest of the movie though.

Ah, another Squidy eh?:) I really never felt that it WAS necessary to the story, it was a means to an end, the en being a world united against a common enemy. Snyder and co changed that so the common enemy was Dr M..so yes I'd understand someone being annoyed at that, but not the exclusion of the squid ALONG with that. I dunno, I felt it worked better for a movie than the squid creature would have but that's just me.

@Nomis he attacked america as well, didnt he destroy like the entire east coast. he also clearly denounced his humanity and any earthly ties when leaving for Mars. The concept of an other worldy attack on humanity was very much intact in the film ending. The squid is a very weak portion of an otherwise amazing story and i much prefer the film version

RorMachine,

Translated better to general audiences it may have been, but better than comics it was not. (Insert Yoda voice.)

I suppose that I am selfish due to being such a big fan of the comics for years and feeling robbed of what -could- have been a perfect score CBM adaptation due to a changed ending. I wanted it loyal, through and through. If you're going to take it on, go all the way... squid and all. He could have done it, and I get the feeling he could have made it work (as evidenced by what he did with the rest of the movie). It would have been a shock, but oh so memorable.

Squidite for life. Lol

The theatrical release of Tom Janes Punisher movie was definitely PG-13. I remember having a fit because they made a Punisher movie PG-13!!

@ Nomis

the ultimate edition is fan"bloody"tastic, adding tales of the black freighter just makes it even more faithful to the source material.

i watched it on download, amazon uk are selling it for £183.00,way too much for a blu-ray.

its getting re-released in a watchmen collectors edition that contains ultimate cut, motion comic & watchmen hardcover graphic novel so i'm waiting for that.

@Nomis Aye aye fellow squidite (haha). I wish there was an alternate ending on the extended edition for us loyalists. Yes, I understand that is impossible but the imagery would have been amazing to see! Iconic as you say.

Asterisk

Why does everyone on this site suck the Watchmen movie's dick? The original novel is my favorite book of all time, and yes, the film is enjoyable to watch, but it really is an empty adaptation. It doesn't really capture the depth of the original book. It's just telling the story.
Asterisk
Asterisk - 9/17/2012, 11:55 AM
And I voted for Kick-Ass, because (A. One of my favorite films and (B. It's one of the rare instances where the adaptation is BETTER than the original.
