RESULTS: Who is the Top Film Score Composer?

This poll came down to the two composers that I figured: Hans Zimmer and John Williams. Between the two artists, they have compiled hundreds of film scores, but who came out on top in the CBM poll?

In all honesty, I thought this would end much differently, as stated in my original article. John Williams has undoubtedly written some of film's most iconic scores, to the point where they go hand in hand when discussing them. But those scores could not bring Williams out on top. Hans Zimmer took this one by a rather surprising margin.I knew he had supporters, but I really though Wiliiams reputation would help him out on this one. Looks like the "Nolanites" (according to Williams fans) helped puch Zimmer over the top. But that's an arguement for another article. Here are the final results:

Is it an all time score contest or 'in the moment'?? Then you have to throw away some of those names right away or not bring up past work. You should have made that clear first time around.

Nolanites unleashed, it all came down to a generations contest, Superman VS Batman.

Hans Zimmer isn't even in the same league as John Williams. I can't believe he won.

and no one mentioned Steve Jablonsky (the man responsible for the score in all three transformers movies as well as various titles such as the Island and the soundtracks for Gears of war) I think he should have at least made the list.

Don't get me wrong, Zimmer's great but Williams should have had this one in the bag. I'm surprised that Elfman or Horner didn't get more votes. I'm also shocked that James Newton Howard's name wasn't on there.

I'm betting the vast majority of voters are unfamiliar with the works of Bernard Hermann, to say nothing of Miklos Rosza or even Jerry Goldsmith. No way is Hans Zimmer the greatest film composer ever.

All this proves is the relative youth of the posters here. There are at least three composers in that list, plus the prolific and versatile Jerry Goldsmith, who are more deserving of top honors. Heck, even Zimmer would probably say that.

Wow. This is like comparing Sinatra to Frank Stallone...Williams is the better composer, hands down... by a WIDE margin

As much as I don't like the Nolan films, Zimmer is my favorite because of his other work. Things like the opening title for the miniseries The Pacific are among the most moving compositions I have ever heard

I like Zimmer and Elfman, but John Williams had more of an impact on the industry and Pop culture as a whole than any other composer.

Everyone knows his music, even people who dont even realize its his music.

This is obviously based on whats popular now and not who is the best EVER.

John Williams should have taken this.

Perhaps it was oversight, but hard to believe that Academy & Grammy Award nominated composer - James Newton Howard was not included. I think he worked with Zimmer on Nolan's Batman Begins & The Dark Knight.

I for one voted for Danny Elfman. Sure, his credits may not be as long as Williams albeit the positivity of some of the films he's scored, but you have to admire the originality of Nightmare Before Christmas, Mars Attacks, Dick Tracy and Batman (Returns).

I'm not denying John Williams' talent. I just have to root for an underdog. Besides, John Williams uses the same motifs far more often then people realize. It's not a bad thing, just a fact.

Williams losing is as others have said -- ridiculous. There isn't a CBM fan, that couldnt hum any number of instantly recognizable pieces of Williams scored music to a layman who in one hearing couldnt identify the theme from....

Zimmer creates mood, but Williams does the same while imprinting a moment of generational culture that captures a moment in cinema history:

How come I keep missing these? Anyway, Williams and Elfman are waay better than Zimmer. There's a difference between making the best scores and the most recent scores.
