According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ricky Gervais is closing in on a deal to star in the sequel to The Muppets. While Modern Family star Ty Burrell has already signed up to play "a lazy Interpol inspector", it's thought that Gervais' role will be as the lead human character and similar in scale to that of Jason Segal's in the first instalment of the rejuvenated Disney franchise. There's currently no details on who he will play as the script has been kept under wraps. Here's hoping for a cameo from Karl Pilkington, eh? Be sure to sound off with your thoughts on this news in the usual place!

Sometimes I think Ricky Gervais is the funniest dude on Earth (Idiot Abroad) and at other times I think he's an annoying, unfunny douche. He's good in small doses.

I just lost $8. Where'd it go? O.o

OH THAT'S RIGHT.

I reserved the best seats in the house for myself during the Muppets Sequel.

He's kind of a dick. Find someone with a little more heart.

@Spideyguy94 I was going to say that "highly anticipated" was a bit much... But now that you mention the greatest man to journey the earth, NOW IM EXCITED.

I can never tell how i feel about Ricky, i think a lot of it is an act. But he does have a good heart, Derek was one of the sweetest things i've seen on TV and that came from him. And it had Karl in!

I'm on board with this. Ricky, when it calls for it, can hold back some of the humor that is considered slightly taboo. Segiel did a geat job and we saw his third leg in a previous movie.

I had no interest in the first film but if Ricky is in this I'll watch it. Funniest man on the planet, the man is a comedic genius

I like the Ricky Gervais show (the animated series built around his podcasts with Karl Pilkington and Stephen Merchant) but he can be a douche as well.

How come Jason Segel isn't returning? :(

@SUPERMAN2013 actually, I think I agree with you on that. Never thought about it before but I only find him funny when he's bouncing off Karl Pilkington.

I'm not having a go, but seriously, why is this here?

Having said that, Ricky Gervais' involvement in this film may convince me to consider contemplating whether I should watch this film.

@santoanderson: totally agree, hope he brings in Merchant, Pilkington and Warwick, he's better with them around.

This sounds awesome, have you guys seen the clip with him and Elmo? Magic.
