Ruining our Childhood?

Ruining our Childhood?

Is Hollywood ruining our childhood?

We've already had two transformers movies, GIJoe is right around the corner, teaser trailers are appearing for Gatcahman (or battle of the planets for us westerners), and last week came news about a Voltron movie. All of this got me thinking, is hollywood ruining my childhood? Like some of you on the site i am in my mid thirties. As a result I am a child of the 70's and 80's. I have very fond memories of growing up with all of these cartoons. Many of the above mentioned ones were my favorites. I remember rushing home from school to watch the afternoon Voltrons with my friends, or getting up early to catch a transformers before i headed off. We all had the toys, specifically the Transformers and the GIJoe. Those were clearly the most popular. My cousins and I are were all about the same age so we had all the toys, and the ones we didn't have we would swap with each other. My personal favorites were the Silverhawks. I remember even playing sick so i could stay home from school and play with the Silverhawk toys. I actually kept them up until a few years back when i gave them away. So with these recent spait of movies, i am as apprehensive as alot of you. I desperately do not want them to ruin these properties. However, i realize that this is a new generation and a new medium. And with my misgivings about the recent transformers movie, and despite Lee777's assurances that GIJoe will be good, i cant help but feel a little let down, as im sure some of you do. But the bottom line is, what made those cartoons so great was not the plots, or character developments, it was the fact that we were watching them through children's eyes. When i watch some of those old cartoons on youtube, they actually seem quite silly now. And farfetched (everyone of the joes was a horrible shot cause they never hit anyone). But that doesn't matter, cause when i watch them now, it is the memories that they conjure up, and the nostalgia for my childhood that makes me enjoy them. So dont worry folks, no matter what hollywood does, no matter how bad they may butcher the characters or plots, they can never take any part of our childhood.........Unless they screw up Silverhawks and give it to Micheal Bay, then ill be pissed and hollywood will burn!!!!!!!

What were your favorites growing up? And are you angry with Hollywood?

I don't have high hopes for GI JOE. I mean, come on. Are you really going to have one of the Williams brothers in it? I can't take hime seriously. I don't want him to be sterotyped as a comedy relief. It had become annoying to me. If they could make a Silverhawks or BIONIC SIX....now there is something to shake a stick at. Time will only tell. I will make a post about 80's shows that should be made into movies and what I think shouldn't be touched. I am not being mean spirited about The Williams kid. I am just saying that he is usually just there to make jokes. I hope he is dead serious. Ok, let me get off my soapbox

Great article Superdog...My favorite was Voltron...I remember coming home from school and watching it as well. And I do have that same sense of nostalgia when I youtube it. I think if we can dissociate the movies frmo their cartoon counterparts until we can determine whether or not they are good, that would be the best thing. To be honest though, Voltron is the only one I have a personal stake in...Transformers and GI Joe, it doesn't matter to me how they treat continuity cause I'm not a fan. But I can see how it would bother those who ARE fans.

Silverhawks was good stuff back in the day...think they were all the same voices as Thundercats. I liked how they created that shield over their face with their hands...great stuff!

thanks guys. scorpioxfactor@ i was gonna do the same kind of article, but went this way instead. i will look forward to reading yours.

durkin@ i would say voltron was my second favorite. i had both sets of voltrons, the lions and the vehicles. and your right, silverawks were the same vioces i beleive. they sound the same anyway. ofcourse all of them were basically the same show. a set of five or six team members with special powers and vehicels etc....they were great. better than that pokemon and dora shit they make today.

teabag@ i thought about buying the dvds...but then i discovered youtube :) and im ok with them making these movies. its kinda cool. if we had sons and not daughters, we could take them to the new movies and then introduce them to the dvds and connect. but instead we'll get stuck with princess movies and dora :)

teabag@ thats true. big screen surround sound would be an awesome way to see those. but the small you tube screen and the crappy versions remind of the little t.v.'s we had with the antennae and the knobs.

Superdog: Whats up with taking us back to the good ole days. I remeber quitting toy bowl football when I was 7 because I was missin my toons lol. I never quit again and end up playing in the mighty SEC, but this another story. Silverhawks,Thundercat,He-Man and anything DC or Marvel could put together were my favs. I noticed the art work was always better with the Hawks and the Cats...REMEBER THE SUPERFRIENDS and later on they introduced the legion of doom. The art got a little better, but it still came up short...even now watch a disney cartoon and look at any comicbook animation it doesnt compare. Do I feel like hollywood is ruining my childhood I guess you could say 50-50. They get some things right and other times they flop...I shouldnt be complaining I remeber a time you'd never see any of our characters on the big screen. So I say let's get behind Hollywood support the movies with sites like these and go out and see the movies.

blade@ i agree, i dont mind seeing these guys on screen. same with the comicbook movies. but they should at least try to get it right. i knew that once transformers made alot of money they would rush out all the other ones for a quick buck. i just hope they take the time to at least attempt to get it right. thats all we can hope for.

and please tell me your not a Gator?

Scorpioxfactor: I agree with you 110% WHY DID THEY CAST A WYAN(not Williams)in this movie. I think if he has too large a role and I mean 10-15min the movie is doomed. Putting him in it in the first place tells me your not really going hardcore with a military action based movie in the first place. We'll see but Im saying its going to tank.

@Tobuttica...nostalgia is a big deal to people...no one likes to see something that reminds them of their childhood being tampered with. That's human nature. And the fact that they're all "frickin' grown men" doesn't make them "douche bags" for wanting to discuss it...I mean it's a common interest that they share. How is it any worse than a bunch of fat ass dudes in their mid-thirties, who peaked as atheletes themselves TWENTY YEARS AGO, spending hours drinking beer, and getting even fatter, talking non-stop about professional sports and watching baseball and football games thirty hours a week?

I understand what you're saying, and personally I could give two shits about GI Joe or Transformers (I was a Voltron man)...but be respectful of other people's opinions, we're here to talk about stuff we like, not to put eachother down.

superdog - 7/27/2009, 4:03 PM
Tobuttica@ if you read the article and the post assface you'll see that no one said they are ruining our childhood. Everyone said it's ok to make these movies and we like them or don't like them based on thier merits. Jesus, what's up with all the Assholes calling people names and disparaging their opinions today. If you don't wanna hear other peoples opinions don't fcking read the post dickhead!

Not just our childhood but our comics too The live action movie have made people stop buying comics because they think the movie are better for example DC got a letter from a couple of fan of the dark Knight movie asking them to kill off the Joker because its Ledger character now.

So Yes these movie are nothing but a pain of the ass

i think the problem is they are confused with which direction to go. since its based on a cartoon they think it has to appeal to kids. but since its a cartoon that was watched by people who are now adults they try to appeal to them too. which is tricky. shrek and the pixar movies have figured out the right balance. with the cartoon movies they still seem to be struggling.

Hey superdog, I'm sorry I acted like a douche bag, and that goes for everyone else too! I just get a little upset sometimes when this topic comes up because I to enoy the nostalgia of the old cartoons, but the movies take my enjoyment to a new level. I will admit that there have been some crapfest of movies out there (ie; anything with Dolph Lundgren that isn't Rocky IV, Ang Lee's Hulk...never mind there's too many), but I think there is some deep hatred for Michael Bay that I don't understand. Sure both TF movies aren't the greatest movies in the world, but they are very enjoyable. Why do people hate him so, and do you think Stephen Sommers will take a load of that off of Bay's shoulders after GI JOE bombs?

I deleted that comment because even I found it offensive. Sorry to anyone that it offended, except Supermike, he's an asshole.
Tobuttica
Tobuttica - 7/28/2009, 4:49 PM
I know you like Bay, I like Bay, but somehow superdog wants him to explode in one of his gimungous explosions. I just wonder what his take and why all the hatred on Bay.
superdog
superdog - 7/28/2009, 9:30 PM
I don't hate bay. He's done some of my favorite movies. I loved bad boys, ar
armegeddon, the rock and I really liked the 1st transformers. But Im sorry I couldn't stand the second one. The normal Michael bay stuff was good (action scenes etc) but all the over the top comedy killed it for me. I'm sorry, seeing a transformer hump someones leg is just too far out there for me. That is disrepectful to the source material. The first one had humor but it didn't go that far.I enjoy his work for what it's worth, but if I think it's a bad film (pearl harbor) I'll say so. Same with somers. I actually enjoyed the mummy movies alot. Van Helsing was acceptable. But gijoe looks like shit so far. I'll see it and judge from there, but if I thinks it's shit I'll say so. Doesn't mean somers is a bad director, same as bay :)

I'm a wee bit older, and remember the pre-cursors to those god-awful 'Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers' - classic shows like 'Ultraman', 'Johnny Sokko and his Giant Flying Robot' and 'Space Giants' (anyone remember these? ... Bueller? ... Bueller? ...Fry? ...Fry? ...anyone? ...anyone?). I also loved 'Doctor Who' (still do!).

Speaking of which, translating a classic series to modern audiences can be done PROPERLY. Take for example, 'Doctor Who' - even though it offically went off the air in 1989 (after a 23 year run that started back in 1963 - I don't really count that Fox TV movie made in 1996, although parts WERE brilliant), it re-launched in 2005 and is stronger that ever thanks to a producer (Russel T. Davies) and crew who ABSOLUTELY loved the show growing up! That's the key - find talented people who grew up adoring the shows and let them do their JOBS (the Wachowski brothers' 'Speed Racer' aside...)! Hollywood, are you listening?!!!

Superdog -

'Johnny Sokko and his Giant Flying Robot': Johnny Sokko is an ordinary kid, who while on a voyage meets a young man who befriends him. The boat is suddenly sunk by the minions of the terrorist organization known as the Gargoyle Gang who have a penchant for giant robots for their attacks. Finding themselves on an island base, the pair meet up with a scientist who has constructed the most advanced and powerful robot of all. Upset that his creation will be used for evil, the scientist shows the pair the robot and the wristwatch voice controller, set to imprint the next speaker as the sole person who can command the robot. Impulsively, Johnny speaks into it and becomes that controller. With the robot's power, they escape and Johnny learns that his new friend is an agent of the worldwide intelligence and anti-terrorist organization, Unicorn, which is dedicated to opposing the Gargoyle Gang. With no alternative, Unicorn recruits Johnny as a full regular agent. Now, Johnny has a vital role in this new war as the one person who can bring the tremendous strength and firepower of the giant robot to bear against the forces of evil.

'Space Giants': An evil alien, Rodak, brings destruction to Earth by unleashing a series of giants monsters and legions of "Lugo men", men clad in black leotards who are almost capable of kung-fu. An old wizard, who follows Rodak around the cosmos, settles down inside a volcano where he creates a giant robot, Goldar, from the energy of the volcano. He also creates a feminine robot of human size, Silvar. A young Japanese boy--the son of a journalist--is recruited by the old man to help fight Rodak and his legions of monsters and Lugo men. He is given a whistle. Three blows signals Goldar, two signals Silvar and one blow signals Gam, a "mirror image" robot of himself (although he looks nothing like the protagonist). All three robots are capable of transforming themselves into rocket planes.

Looking back, they were pretty corny (much like the Power Rangers are to me today)... but hey, I was just a little kid back then, and to me this was some pretty cool [excrement]! I think you can find episodes floating around You Tube, if you want to check it out...

gambitfreak@ thanks man. i am the man.

logan@ they were all pretty corny when we look back on them now. but we were kids, as i say in my article, so ofcourse they were fantastic to us. which is why i say they can never ruin them, cause they more than just cartoons to us. they represent our childhoods and out memories.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 7/30/2009, 5:38 PM
Point taken dog - but maybe (and this maybe the nostalgia talking), I don't remember them being as stupid as the crap being put out today. Sure 'Power Rangers' is a rip-off of those classics I mentioned, but at least back then, no one bothered to try and 'Americanize' them by splicing scenes of bad-acting caucasian actors with all the action shots and trying to pass it off as something else. The sillyness was part of the charm. It was what it was.
