SUPERMAN #1: George Perez to Write and Draw

SUPERMAN #1: George Perez to Write and Draw

George Perez, whose experience with the Man of Steel includes Crisis on Infinite Earths and the JLA/Avengers crossover event, will be assuming writing and art duties on the main Superman title when it relaunches with #1 in September.

"George Pérez of course has major chops in this field previously," Bleeding Cool is reporting. "He co-wrote, then fully wrote, the Wonder Woman #1 relaunch in 1986, as well as co-plotting Teen Titans and writing and drawing various Superman titles around the same time.... Apart from his creator owned Crimson Plague series, George Pérez hasn’t written a great deal. Well, this all changes in September when, according to good comic book industry sources, Pérez is scheduled to write and draw the new Superman #1."

George Perez is a genius. I know he's a megastar, but he's really underrated. When he goes all experimental it revolutionises not only sequential storytelling, but art aswell. That's the sort of stuff that can only be done in the comics medium. The kind of stuff Alan Moore is always looking for. It's quite suprising that they have never worked together, actually. On top of that his style is about as classic as it gets whilst always seeming fresh and contemporary.
I'm totally psyched about this, now. Perez doing the post-flashpoint Superman? Woo-to-the mo-fo'ing-hoo!
They really better not relaunch Action Comics, though.

Meh, I'm not a big fan. His work on the JLA/Avengers team up a few years back was...dated. If someone has some good examples of his work I can get excited about please show me, cause i'm not feeling this. at all.

George Perez's is a great artist but I'm still not cool about this relaunch. DC wants to pull the reboot cord now, when we're already in danger of losing Supes. Are they high?

@marvel72 I agree with what you're saying (previous comment) but you know when they do get to what would've been the 1000th issue, they'll renumber it 1000.
DC and Marvel have both done it before at milestone numbers.

honestly not exactly sure about perez writing but we'll just have to wait and see.

A real draftsman and storyteller :)

Amazo: My sentiments exactly

Marvel72: I first discovered Perez's work when I started buying back issues of Avengers when I started reading comics. I've been a fan ever since.

I may have to buy one of these new DC titles after all. Perez has been my favorite artist for many, many years. Many so-called artists today could learn a lot from him about storytelling and proper anatomical drawing.

Back in the day there was nobody better than Perez, Byrne, Adams and Starlin.

I miss the old school.Guys like John Buscema,Ernie Chan,Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez etc
These guys went to art school and learned to draw! Alot of modern guys seemed to have learned by copying images off of Cartoon Network. They're good at what they do but it's just not the same.
@Hawks
Agree with your list too bud!

I hate George Perez's art. he draws very old school and he has a major habit of only drawing character in their original costumes, hair, etc..

Sounds like a good choice. But again, he's not a new face. And that is what DC needs if they want their books to tie into real world themes and be more relatable.

Perhaps DC have taken notice and we'll get a new golden age. They certainly aren't sparing the cash on the talent they're bringing in!

@ Amazo I think the shading is great, detail is great also. A lil too busy, and the anatomy is off looking (that may just be me though) still looks really good.

BUT on to Perez, this site got my hopes up when they said Morrison was doing Superman lol Perez is a great artist, but i haven't read of his written work so idk. They should have gotten Morrison, he is a great writer especially on superman. However i am looking forward to some good Perez art, we will just see how the story comes along.

Don't like his work? His style is dated??? Its ART!!! Artwork doesn't have an expiration date. Is Frazetta dated? How about Rembrandt? You know-nothing wet behind the ears KIDS friggin crack me up!

Quality artwork is quality artwork no matter what period it's from. You could try to make the arguement that he himself is not the artist he used to be (even though that is not true) and at least that would have the remote chance at being valid, but to say it's dated is laughable.

I'll take late 60's early 70's Steranko, Neal Adams, or Barry Smith and 70's-80's Miller, Byrne, Starlin, and Perez over 90% of the CRAP they are filling pages with now.

Great artwork is ALWAYS great artwork.

@hawksblueyes Damn I still have that Avengers and Teen titans one of the reasons why I read Avengers and teen Titans was because of his art.
Gotta say though i like what john Byrne did with X-men but not a big fan of his art. Perez blows him out the water.

Perez is also great at mini series..the Judas contract, crisis and i. gauntlet..remember the titan series with vigilante?

@niknik - you're goddamn right, brother, you're goddamn right. By the way, is your handle a reference to Easy Rider?
@"TheGreatOne" - you're goddamn wrong, moron, you're goddamn wrong. Perez always makes a point of drawing the characters in the current costumes. In fact he had to make sure that there would be no more costume changes at Marvel or DC as his JLA/Avengers issues came out, so he wouldn't have to keep redrawing them over and over.

From what I have read on the redsign of Sups, There will be a lot of pads and seams to compensate for no shorts. Its just going to look off balanced for me. I could deal with the high coller but why give it to the other heroes? I trust George to draw it well. He is the best, but I just don't have faith for the final product.

Wonder Woman is my biggest beef. There was a reason why she wore US patriotic colors... does anyone here know why? Also, I feel there should have been a more Greco/Roman design much as other readers here believe. Yes, the idea makes her look dated. Very dated by centurys but it would be true to the character's background. The new rule of no bare legs really is not logical. First, its not going to be sexy to sell books. Second, invunerable gals really don't need the protection (Ex. Fairchild, Supergirl, Wonder Woman,Wonder Girl, etc. etc.). Third, it wasn't shorts or pants in debate of whether a costume was practical or not. It was the lack of support such as strapless tanktops and busties. Forth, taking away options for designers is never a positive choice. Fifth, in a liberal media outlet when did sexy become a taboo?

You guys see it how you will.
