The actual movies are always the best part of a movie, but we all love a fantastic Universe surrounding the film. Sometimes even poorly made films can seem awesome simply because of the places the characters are grounded. So without any more chatter, let’s get down to some of the greatest universes ever made on the big screen.

Honorable mentions

Alien/predator universes.
The first alien was one of the best sci-fi films made. However the universe hurts from not being large enough past just aliens from outer space. Predator is a tad more interesting, but the same goes for him. Even if he is in the same universe.

The Dark Knight

One of the greatest trilogies ever, and by far the best comic book trilogy. The darkness of each film was great, and the villains and creativity were outstanding. However the Universe itself falls short from being far to realistic which is good for the style of films. However it doesn’t ever reach to something more than the normal.

Matrix

I know a lot of people will get mad for this not being in the top 5. This video game reality was amazing, you could do whatever you wanted in it. The end of the world was coming from computers and Mr. Anderson was terrific. The universe however suffers because the last 2 films were awful, and there was nothing new added after the first film.

Harry Potter

Such a fantastic world of magic. Harry potter was many peoples childhood hero. He has his wand that he waved and it was awesome clique magic. The universe however just doesn’t quite match that of the greatest out there.

Blade runner

How could we not talk about this film? The universe in blade runner was one of the best. The film is now one of the greatest made. However the universe doesn’t stretch to more than one film. Therefor not able to climb to one of the top spots.

Now for the real top 5 list.

5. Terminator

This near end of the world robot war was incredible. Even though the last two films have been a far worse then the original 2. The universe was and is amazing and the greatest of the universes that doesn’t leave earth.

4. Lord of the Rings

There has never been a better mid evil style magical universe like the lord of the rings. The trilogy is arguably the best trilogy in movie history, and the world was incredible. Creatures from mountain giants, to dwarves, to hobbits, to dragons. The creatures are among the most amazing ever made. Along with the fantastic cities, and the evil Mordor. It is hard to argue the universe that has stretched for 4 films, soon to be 5 and 6, is one of the greatest ever made.

3. Star Trek

Star trek has been around for longer than I can remember. A universe that has stretched from the TV universe to the movie universe many times. The weird wacky universe has always awed us with its massive ships and great worlds. It’s a universe so large it has now had to timelines for one universe, something you don’t get to see every day.

2. Star Wars

Let’s be honest 2 and 3 can easily be swapped here. The original trilogy was incredible. The Death Star a creation like non other, watching a planet blow up was mind blowing at the time. The incredible creatures that are far too numerous to count. The new trilogy which was horrific, however looking at the continued expansion of the universe including many more hints to the way their galaxy is made always made us happy. The universe of star was reaches so far and fantastic that the possibilities will always be endless.

1. The Marvel Cinematic Universe

The newest and best universe created. While the individual films may not have as good of films as some of these above, they are all good, and none of them horrible. The universe has stretched were non others have. It has gone from inventors, to chemical science, to world war 2, to Norse mythology, to aliens. It has reached more corners of a galaxy than any universe ever before it. It has tied in multiple solo films before bringing them all together for the avengers, something that has never been done on screen before. It continues to expand faster than any other universes yet, and still promises us more. We are seeing it add street level fighting (with the Netflix shows) and space adventures (with Guardians of the Galaxy) there is no doubt this universe is grander and more incredible then any before it.

Star Wars and Lord of The Rings should be 1 and 2 IMO

Harry Potter owns Star Wars, Star Trek and Lord of the Rings IMO

1-4 are all close @Bazing can be put in any order.

LOTR is awesome. Star Wasr should be #1 IMHO.

#1-Star Wars
#2-Harry Potter
#3-LotR
#4-Star Trek
#5-MCU

4 & 5 are very close to each other, 2 & 3 could switch. Star Wars is clearly #1. Terminator is #8 at best (I would put Battlestar Galactica and the Buffyverse ahead of it too.)

@Lhornbk ahhh I missed Battlestar Galactica! I went back and forth between MCU and Starwars. But MCU is much larger and reaches more places in a universe. like I said from scientists/inventors/ww2/norse/alien so on so on. Star wars is incredible though and its space universe is much more massive then MCU. I think I could have given LOTR a bump ahead of star trek as well. but personally have always liked the space stuff a tad more.

Yeah, gotta go with Star Wars for number 1.

Star trek sucks...

1-Lord of the Rings Universe
2-Star Wars Universe
3-Nolan Batmanverse
4-Raimi Spider-Manverse
5-either MCU or Fox X-Verse. They're equal IMO.

Yeah, i love the MCU, but personally I like Star Trek, Star Wars, and LOTR more. I'd also say the X-Men film universe is up there, and the Arrow universe. Smallville is cool if you look at it like a super elseworlds Superboy story, where Clark has already become the hero the world needs without having to be the symbol that world needs

Purely opinion people so what if he/she likes the MCU more then the other movie universes that is his/her right.

For me in film universes in no particular order MCU, Star Trek, Star Wars, LOTR, and completely out of left field here but their was a recent cg movie made about it so it counts Warhammer 40k I would actually say it is my favorite.

If anyone knows about Warhammer 40k is has one of the best universes with all the different races the Imperium and Chaos forces alone are awesome enough then throw in Eldar, Dark Eldar, Tau, Orkz, Tyranid, and Necrons. Also to those who don't know Starcraft was originally a Warhammer 40k game until Games Workshop the makers of Warhammer 40k dropped out so Blizzard just used what they started and made Starcraft.

Space Marine

^Meant to say Terrans instead of Space Marine over the second picture. Then those who do not know the second picture is a Space Marine then third is a group of Tyranid, and the last are a couple of Eldar troopers.

@Nova NEVER Warhammer 40k has some of the coolest and darkest lore ever. I love the universe so much just reading all the history of the different races and figures it is awesome.

@Nova I don't play the tapletop strategy game nor the RPG my love for the series comes from the lore and the strategy games put out by Reliq.

Yeah i'd have to agree with the comments even though it is your list. It should be a crime to put the MCU above Star Wars, LOTR and Harry Potter.

Yeah, IMO the Star Wars and TLOTR should be the highest ranked. Don't get me wrong, I understand your choice for the MCU, it has all the potential to become the number 1, but that would be only after they finish Phase 3 (introducing a micro universe with Ant-man's shrinking perspective, and the magic aspect of it with Dr. Strange).

Naw man, I cant buy this. Where is the Mad Max. universe, or the GI Joe/transformers universe. or the Tron universe. See this here is when modern day fans try to disrupt the force for a true blue art fan. Dude actually put TDK as a universe. This disturbs me.

I don't mind your list Dougie.

I am going to sway one thing.

Man, [frick] Harry Potter. Dumbest shit ever put on film. I would rather have my eyelids taped open, being forced to watch Halle Berry's Catwoman, and Batman and Robin at the same time!

Hell, I think I would even participate in one of Gusto's sexy parties than watch that useless piece of dog turd.
