The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has narrowed the field of contenders in the visual effects category for the 90th Academy Awards. Ten films remain from the list of twenty finalists that was announced at the beginning of the month. The remaining finalists are:

Alien: Covenant

Blade Runner 2049

Dunkirk

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Kong: Skull Island

Okja

The Shape of Water

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

War for the Planet of the Apes

As usual, summer movies are pretty well represented on the list, along with Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water, a film that has potential to be nominated in some other major categories as well.

The Netflix release Okja is not the only film distributed by the streaming service that could be up for a gold statuette in March, as David Ayer's Bright has made the shortlist for the hair and makeup Oscar. Here is the full list of films:

Bright

Darkest Hour

Ghost in the Shell

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

I, Tonya

Victoria & Abdul

Wonder

James Gunn's MCU adventure Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the only film that has a chance at pulling in both awards, but the odds of that are still pretty slim. The awards season oddsmakers at GoldDerby.com has Guardians as the second safest bet to win in hair and makeup, but sixth in the visual effects category.

Which films do you think deserve the Oscars for visual effects and hair and makeup? Sound off below!

War for the planet of the Apes and Shape of Water definitely deserve its nominations. Unlikely Guardians 2 would win but still one can dream.
