20 movies have been selected to move up in the visual effects category for 2018's Oscars award show and later this month, the list will be reduced to 10 movies.

Take a look at the 20 films that are currently in the spotlight for the VFX Oscar:

- Alien: Covenant
- Beauty and the Beast
- Blade Runner 2049
- Dunkirk
- Ghost in the Shell
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
- Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
- Justice League
- Kong: Skull Island
- Life
- Logan
- Okja
- Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
- The Shape of Water
- Spider-Man Homecoming
- Star Wars: The Last Jedi
- Thor: Ragnarok
- Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
- War for the Planet of the Apes
- Wonder Woman

The variety so far is quite impressive, with many blockbusters such as Kong: Skull Island and the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi, sharing the list with lower budget films such as Netflix's original south-korean fantasy Okja and Guillermo Del Toro's acclaimed Shape of Water.

The list also holds a generous amount of comic book movies, 8 to be exact if counting Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which is based off the french comic series Valérian and Laurelin and Ghost in the Shell, which was inspired by the cyber-punk manga series.

The official 5 nominees will be announced January 23rd.

Which movie do you think will win the Oscar for Best Visual Effects this year? Let us know in the comments.

Apes. I'm calling it. Apes wins. You heard it here first (or maybe in reviews back in July, but you know what I mean). I'll bet money on it. I'm going with my gut here. I got faith in this. Trust me.

Justice league for sure!! None of those flops deserve to be next to it. Steppenwolf and Cavill's lip looked amazing!

@KIDCOM - Yeah. There's a lot of great stuff in Homecoming. The CGI is NOT one of them.

In all seriousness it must be blade runner. The most beautiful film of the year although beauty is subjective so you probably disagree
