The Walking Dead Walks Onto AMC

"The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile" director Frank Darabont is adapting and directing the zombie comic "The Walking Dead" to be released on the AMC network.

AMC just acquired the rights to Robert Kirkman's popular comic book "The Walking Dead" for a potential series. The project is being executive produced by Darabont and Gale Anne Hurd and will be featured on AMC.

This from The Hollywood Reporter:

"Walking Dead," a monthly black-and-white comic book, has been a hotly sought-after property since it was published in 2003 by Image Comics. Darabont originally developed the project several years ago under his deal at NBC. It landed at AMC after a healthy bidding war.

"Dead" chronicles the months and years following a zombie apocalypse where a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, travel in search of a safe, secure home. The comic explores the challenges of life in a world overrun by zombies that take a toll on the survivors. Over time, they grow willing to do anything to survive, so the interpersonal conflicts sometimes present a greater danger to their continuing survival than the zombies who roam the country."

Joel Stillerman, senior vp original programming, production and digital content had this to say regarding The Walking Dead:

"I don't know of another series of books that has such beautiful storytelling, great human emotions, and everything that really works on AMC," he said. "It allows us to stay where we want to stay: in the world of smart, sophisticated storytelling and apply that to a show that we think the audience would love."

Well if they stick to his smart, sophisticated storytelling formula I'll watch this on AMC. Everyone knows it would be nice to have some quality on tv versus quantity amounts of rushed story telling, or uneventful episodes that build up into nothing.

@InSpace, I was staying at her house and had to get on a plane home in the morning, so it was really a limited time kind of thing, let me say though that airplane turbulence and zombie nightmares do not go well together! And I did swipe them from her book shelf at the time so I guess I did steal them in the limited sense, but since I hauled all of the Age of Apocolypse books down for her in my carry on I felt entitled. =) Hmm.. which reminds me, I should go get comics, cause it's Wednesday and it's my Birthday!

I'm a big Walking Dead and Shawshank Redemption fan. This is a good day. I'm glad this title is getting the series treatment and not a movie. Robert Kirkman's intention with Walking Dead was always to make the zombie story that continues where a movie would normally end. If you've never read Walking Dead go do so.

Awesome news, but with this reservation . . . How is a basic cable show going to have the gore factor that this story cals for. Zombies friggin eat people!! They get shot through the head. Love the series, but HBO or Showtime would have been more ideal for this. For a great zombie mini-series, check out the BBC's "Dead Set" btw. Funnny without being corny + good gore and scare elements.
