Total Film have yet another awesome countdown for comic book fans. This time the top 40 most shocking moments. You won't agree with all of em, but there is no doubt it's an impressively researched and put together list. We have posted the top 10 below.

1) In the top spot they have this famous moment from Captain America Comics #1. Certainly iconic, but shocking? For it's time sure. The image was recreated in the recent Captain America movie, although it was a fake Hitler Cap was punching.

2) Now this isn't what I consider shocking, especially since they never actually got married! But I guess when your Aunt decides to get hitched to your alter ego's arch villain it must certainly be shocking to Peter Parker. Wedding bells almost chimed in Amazing Spider-Man #131

3) This moment from Astonishing X-Men #4 was a surprise, especially since Joss Whedon had misdirected readers into believing it was Jean Grey he would be bringing back Colossus had been "dead" for 2 whole years at this point, a rarity in today's resurrection happy comic climate.

4) Ok, no doubt Arseface was a controversial character, but out of all the shocking moments in Preacher I really wouldn't pick his introduction as the most shocking of all. Anyway, this unfortunate young man who's attempted suicide resulted in him resembling a sphincter is their number 4.

5) I must admit I have never read Umbrella Academy so have no idea about this one. Here is what Total Film say: "Having been transformed into a musical superbeing, Vanya proves just how powerful she now is when she takes up her violin, plays a note, and promptly destroys her creator (The Conductor of the Orchestra Verdammten). Not only destroys him, but rips him in bloody half. The power of music, eh?"

6) At 6 we have this awesome moment from Watchmen issue 4 when we discover how Jon Osterman became the God-like Dr Manhattan. Not "shocking" exactly but again, for readers at the time who would have been very curious how this being came into existence it would have been a great reveal.

7) This was a terrifying moment from Walking Dead when our heroes discover they have more than Zombies to worry about. They fall foul to the insane Governor of the town of Woodbury. Lots of shocking moments to choose from in the ensuing story arc.

8) This moment from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol 2 #5 was a genuine shocker. After discovering that The Invisible Man is a traitor, Mr Hyde proceeds to exact revenge the best way he knows how. By raping him. Nasty stuff.

9) Not TOO shocking in that readers had a fair idea it might happen after they voted on it, but in execution it would have certainly been a shock to see new Robin Jason Todd beaten to a bloody pulp by The Joker before being blown up. This moment resulted in a defining aspect in Batman's character for many year sand through writers as he struggled with the guilt of what happened.

10) At 10 they have Lex Luthor becoming President of the US in Superman: Lex 2000. Well, he had been running!

I think there are much more shocking moments in the rest of their top 40 as well as moments from other comics that don't even make it but something like this is always going to be subjective. Click the link below to have a look yourselves and see if you agree with the rest of the list.

I don't know...I think that they got the books right with a lot of these, but didn't get the right moments. Like Watchmen that isn't the most "shocking" moment in Watchmen. That story is full of exciting/shocking moments, and I don't think Manhattan's creation is one of them. And The Walking Dead- I think the Governor is a shocking character, but what he does is more shocking then him as a whole.

Yeah I agree, I guess maybe they didn't want to get too spoilery of something?

for me it was finding out terra (teen titans) was a traitor. that blew me away the first time I read that.

For me, it was the real appearance of the "Hybrid", a alien-human offspring in the pages of the old "ROM:The Space Knight" comic book.

I was 10, and by the time it was the most grotesque thing i had ever seen. Gee, Rom stories were heavy "ALIEN movie" heavy.

The second one, was reading a WHAT IF story, "What if Phoenix had not died?" in which the Phoenix vaporizes Kitty Pride, then, the X-men, cruelly one by one.

Recently, it was IRON MAN punching Captain America breaking his teeth in the Civil War. Gosh, their friendship could never recover after that.

Then, a touching moment was a few stories later, in which he remembers old adventures and concludes that "It was not worth it".

No Gwen Stacy death? Would have thought that was pretty shocking...

These are not the most shocking moments in comics. A back issue of Wizard has the most shocking moments and they are shocking as heck.

Just Film Mag BS. Nomis covered most of the ones I would have gone for.

Also: Matt Murdoch's girlfriend revealing his identity for a fix.

what about wolverine old man logan when the x-mansion is being attacked by super villains & wolverine goes on a massacre wiping them all out,but it turned out to be an illusion cast by mysterio & wolverine actually wiped out the x-men & the other mutants as well.

@Nomis- I think Ror agrees, there are alot more shocking things going on in comics than this mediocre stuff. Total Film should pick up a copy of TRANSMETROPOLITAN and then get therapy.

Shooting Barbara in Killing Joke was shocking but making Commish look at the pics was just plain evil, and he was nekkid during the show!

Wow, the death of Superman, Bane breaking Batman's back, Aunt May finding out that Peter is Spiderman, Jean Grey's death as Dark Phoenix, the return of Barry Allen (Final Crisis), Hal Jordan singlehandedly destroying the Green Lantern Corp, Wolverine having Adamantium ripped out of his body by Magneto didn't merit top spots?

Just read the top 40 on Total Film site. A lot of the ones we have been mentioning are there and a lot of real dumb ones.

Yes, It's Written by Warren Ellis and (hope I don't get reported for this pic) this is just one thing that happens from a bog bite to Herr Starr. GREAT series.
SkunkApe1

Good call on number 8.

When people make fun of me by arguing that its a comic, not a graphic novel, I always say "Buy LXG Volume 2, read it, and then give to your kid....after all, its just a comic."

Again, "Watchmen" made TIME magazine's 100 best novel's.

@Nomis- you'll like it, I think. It will keep you interested. That's nothing compared to some of the other stuff.

The death of Nightcrawler deserves to be in there

- Jean Grey dying the FIRST time was a complete shocker

- Elektra dying in the hands of Bullseye in the famous stab scene was a shocker

- Supergirl (from Earth-whatever) dying in COIE was a shocker

- Superman dying in the hands of Doomsday was shocking

- Batman surviving a direct super punch by Superman was dumb and shocking (I take that back, it's not shocking, he's just Batman)

- Black Panther marrying Storm is a shocker

- Wolverine going to hell and *SPOILERS* came from left field and was a complete shocker

The list should have been labeled "Surprising" instead of "Shocking". Some of them are spot on, others don't belong on the list.

How about Jean (actually the Phoenix force impersonating her although we didn't know it at the time) sacrificing herself to save the universe in Uncanny X-Men #137 or

How about the Thunderbolts revealed as the Masters of Evil in Thunderbolts #1?

Jason Todd's return in Batman: Hush

One that had several was Identity Crisis. great book. the death of Sue Dibny, the story of how Dr. Light raped her and what the JL did to him for doing it, the death of Robin's dad and the original Captain Boomerang, the identity of the killer. highly recommend reading it.
ROMACK
ROMACK - 9/14/2011, 9:28 AM
I would say what happened to Batgirl in "The Killing Joke" was way more shocking than Jason Todd takin' a dirt nap.
VictorHugo
VictorHugo - 9/14/2011, 9:34 AM
Nomis. i agree about Sue losing her son.
What made worse was the fact that Reed had that useless fight with Dr.Octopus, wasting even more time.

I might be sounding a bit to literal here but why didn't Shocker, Electro, Static Shock, Storm, or Marv from Sin City make it on the list?

@marvel72

Isnt that the series that showed Jean Grey as a hooker and all?

I thought Bucky killing Nomad was kinda shocking. Good way to cull the herd so to speak.
ElBeaster
ElBeaster - 9/14/2011, 11:23 AM
@MADDMONKK

That a scene from PREACHER, not TRANSMETROPOLITAN. But both series are fanstastic reads full of shocking moments.

And I would say Y: The Last Man had the most shocking moment I've ever read.

I do agree that the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen scene should be on there. That was downright disturbing.

This list just seemed very arbitrary. There are so many shocking moments in great stories like Top 10, Sandman, Transmetropolitan, Fables, etc.

RunDTC - 9/14/2011, 11:24 AM
yeah, I read through the whole 40 and their description of Identity Crisis is wrong.

the Dr. Light rapist and Sue Dibny death especially who killed her was a true shocker.
